The angular dependence of polarization of the A-band emission from RbCl:$Pb^{2+}$ is measured at 13.4 K to determine the symmetry axes of the $Pb^{2+}-v^-_c$ dipoles. The results indicate that these centers posess tetragonal symmetry. This implies that $v^-_c$ is situated in the next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) position to the $Pb^{2+}$ ion. The polarization ratio of the A-band emission measured at various temperatures is found to be independent of the temperature. The temperature independence of polarization confirms that, for the ion, the Jahn-Teller effect reduced by strong spin-orbit interaction does not give rise to thermal depolarization.

We propose and demonstrate a novel polarization- and wavelength-independent digital electrooptic switch in $Ti:LiNbO_3$ with switching voltage of ${\pm}$32V at $1.55{\mu}m$ wavelength. This $2{\times}2$ integrated optic switch is characterized by a step-like response to the applied voltage. Switching is achieved through adiabatic mode evolution in an asymmetric waveguide junction. An average insertion loss of ∼4.5dB and polarization independent switching with average crosstalk of -12dB are achieved.

Performances of spectrum-sliced channels are strongly affected by their relative intensity noise (RIN). We use polarization-independent optical modulators (PIOMs) for spectrum-sliced channels to suppress their RIN. The PIOM driven by a high sinusoidal voltage signal evenly redistributes optical frequency components in the spectral domain and reduces the RIN. It can be used at a broadband light source (BLS) output to produce spectrum-sliced channels having lower RIN values. Also, it can be used for each spectrum-sliced channel within each optical network unit (ONU). In our experiment, where 12.5-GHz-spaced spectrum-sliced channels are used in 1-GbE speed, the use of PIOM at the BLS output reduces the bit error rate (BER) of the spectrum-sliced channel by more than an order of magnitude. The use of PIOM within the ONU reduces the BER by approximately 3 orders of magnitude.

An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch with rib waveguides is designed and fabricated by using the RIE method. POlarization-independent and wavelength-insensitive operation is demonstrated at the wavelengths of 1.3mm and 1.55mm, for the first time in electro-optic polymer-based devices. The rib waveguides have been designed to achieve good guiding properites for both TE and TM polarizations by controlling the etching depth as well as its aspect ratio. Especially theetching depth is controlled to change the guided mode profiles of the rib waveguide and thus to achieve an optimum coupling in the branch. The measured crosstalk is better than -16dB and the extincton ratio of each output port is greater than 16dB.

We demonstrate an ultrathin metamaterial for polarization independent perfect absorption as well as a band-pass filter (BPF) which works at a higher frequency band compared to the perfect absorption band. The planar metamaterial is comprised of three layers, symmetric split ring resonators (SSRRs) at the front and structured ground plane (SGP) at the back separated by a dielectric layer. The perfect metamaterial absorber (MA) can realize near 100% absorption due to high electromagnetic losses from the electric and/or magnetic resonances within a certain frequency band. The thickness of the structure is only 1/28 of the maximum absorption wavelength.

Liquid crystal (LC) devices can be operated as amplitude modulators and phase modulators. They usually require two polarizers; therefore the optical efficiency is limited. We introduce two general principles of polarization-free liquid crystal devices and also show several LC devices by applying the principles.

Effects of the external optical feedback on the optical transmission characteristics were evaluated for 3 kinds of commercialized DFB-LD modules for 2.5Gbps optical communication systems. As a result, intensity noise induced by external optical feedback via generating the external cavity modes deteriorated the transmission performances of sthe DFB-LD modules as much as 1.5dB, 1.2dB, and 1.0dB for the maximum feedback ratio of -8.8dB which corresponds to the worst reflection along the fiber transmission line. Additional penalty of 0.5dB was occurrred when state of polarization of feedback light was adjusted. From the experiments evaluating the isolation ratio of the single polarization optical isolator, decrease of the polarization dependent isolation ratio as much as 10dB from that of specification and the effective isolation ratio as much as 20dB from that of specification was mjor cause of high sensitivity of DFB-LD modules to external feedback. It was suggested that polarization independent optical isolator or single polarization optical isolator with isolation ratio specification of more than 40dB is required for 2.5Gbps DFB-LD modules with complete suppression of external feedback effects.

In this paper, infinite frequency selective surface comprised with rectangular plates which are arranged periodically is analyzed using Method of Moment based on Galerkin's method. In analysis, it is assumed that the plates are infinite thin perfect conductors. Based on this assumption, the reflection characteristics of the FSS is compared according to the polarization of plane-wave and the direction of incidence. In the results, the variation of reflection characteristics of the FSS highly depends on the direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is parallel to the plane of incidence, but the variation is nearly independent upon direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is perpendicular to the plane of incidence.

1550nm 파장대역에서 편광에 관계없이 동작하는 $Ti:LiNbO_3\;2{\times}2$ 삽입/분기 광 멀티플렉서를 구현하였다. 소자는 두 개의 입 출력 광도파로, 두 개의 편광모드분리기, 두 개의 편광모드 변환기 그리고 전기광학효과로 파장을 가변시킬 수 있는 전극으로 구성되었다. TE, TM 편광에 대해서 단일모드 특성을 갖는 채널 광도파로는 x-cut $LiNbO_3$에 Ti 확산 방법으로 제작하였으며, 채널 광도파로 위에 배열된 $SiO_2$ 패드의 전단 스트레인을 이용하여 위상정합 편광모드변환기를 구현하였다. 한편 전기광학효과를 이용하여 파장을 가변시키기 위해서 전압을 인가하여 광도파로의 복 굴절률을 변화시켰다. 0.094nm/V 파장가변률과 최대 17nm 파장을 가변시켰으며, 8.2dB 부 모드레벨과 3.72nm FWHM을 측정하였다.
