STUDIES OF GRAVITY WAVES USING MICHELSON INTERFEROMETER MEASUREMENTS OF OH(3-1)BANDS

  • As part of a long-term program for polar upper atmospheric studies, temperatures and intensities of the OH(3-1) bands were derived from spectrometric observations of airglow emissions over King Sejong station($62.22^{circ}S,\;301.25^{circ}E$). These measurements were made with a Michelson interferometer to cover wavelength regions between 1000nm and 2000 nm. A spectral analysis was performed to individual nights of data to acquire information on the waves in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere. It is assumed that the measured fluctuations in the intensity and temperature of the OH (3-1) airglow were caused by gravity waves propagating through the emission layer. Correlation of intensity and temperature variation revealed oscillations with periods ranging from 2 to 9 hours. We also calculated Krassovsky’s parameter and compared with published values.

Error Rate and Capacity Analysis for Incremental Hybrid DAF Relaying using Polar Codes

  • The deployment of an incremental hybrid decode-amplify and forward relaying scheme is a promising and superior solution for cellular networks to meet ever-growing network traffic demands. However, the selection of a suitable relaying protocol based on the signal-to-noise ratio threshold is important in realizing an improved quality of service. In this paper, an incremental hybrid relaying protocol is proposed using polar codes. The proposed protocol achieves a better performance than existing turbo codes in terms of capacity. Simulation results show that the polar codes through an incremental hybrid decode-amplify-and-forward relay can provide a 38% gain when ${\gamma}_{th(1)}$ and ${\gamma}_{th(2)}$ are optimal. Further, the channel capacity is improved to 17.5 b/s/Hz and 23 b/s/Hz for $2{\times}2$ MIMO and $4{\times}4$ MIMO systems, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to achieve the optimal solution.

  • In this paper, we have obtained information about the orientational distribution (polar and azimuthal) of the surface molecules on backward rubbed polyimide. Using the second-harmonic genration tecnique, the nonlinear susceptibility tensor components were induced. And, the orientational distribution function was estimated without a prior assumptions, using the maximum entropy method. The polar angle of surface molecules befor rubbing is isotropic. The polar angle of surface molecules after rubbing is anisotropic along the rubbing direction. The polar angle of surface molecules after several rubbing is determined by the last rubbing direction.

  • The non-polar optical phonon scattering in the valence band depends on the masses, ratios, and types of mixtures of constituent atoms. Therefore, the random distribution of atoms in alloy semiconductors should be considered in the analysis of scattering mechanisms. For this purpose, the force equations of n atoms in a unit cell are expressed in a n x n matrix form to obtain the angular frequencies due to the acoustic and non-polar optical phonons. And, n is then assumed to be infinity. When this work is compared with other results published elsewhere, it is concluded that the independence of atomic displacement or amplitude of oscillation as ell as the infinite number of atoms in a unit cell must be taken into account for the random distribution of atoms in alloy semiconductors.

Large deflection behavior of a flexible circular cantilever arc device subjected to inward or outward polar force

  • The problem of very large deflection of a circular cantilever arc device subjected to inward or outward polar force is studied. An exact elliptic integral solution is derived for the two cases and the results are checked using large displacement finite element analysis via the ANSYS package by performing a new novel modeling simulation technique for this problem. Excellent agreements have been obtained between the exact analytical solution and the numerical approach. From this study, a design chart for engineers is developed to predict the required value for the inward polar force for the device to switch on for a given angle forming the circular arc (${\theta}_o$). This study has several interesting applications in mechanical engineering, integrated circuit technology, nanotechnology and especially in microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) such as a MEM circular device switch subjected to attractive or repulsive magnetic forces due to the attachments of two magnetic poles at the fixed and at the free end of the circular cantilever arc switch device.

  • 고속 부하특성을 갖는 장비들이 일반화되면서 탑재형 발전기는 빠른 응답특성을 만족시켜야 한다. 본 논문은 고속 부하용으로 개발된 단극 발전기의 모델링, 시뮬레이션 및 실험 등을 기술한다. 입력 제한기가 있는 단극 발전기의 시뮬레이션 모델이 만들어졌고, 응답특성을 개선하는 최적 이득이 시뮬레이션 및 분석을 통해 결정된다. 최적 이득값을 적용하여 개발된 발전기의 향상된 대역폭 및 안정성이 시뮬레이션과 실험으로 입증되어졌다.

  • Let p(z) be a polynomial of degree n having no zero in |z| < k, k ≤ 1, then Govil proved $$\max_{{\mid}z{\mid}=1}{\mid}p^{\prime}(z){\mid}{\leq}{\frac{n}{1+k^n}}\max_{{\mid}z{\mid}=1}{\mid}p(z){\mid}$$, provided |p'(z)| and |q'(z)| attain their maximal at the same point on the circle |z| = 1, where $$q(z)=z^n{\overline{p(\frac{1}{\overline{z}})}}$$. In this paper, we extend the above inequality to polar derivative of a polynomial. Further, we also prove an improved version of above inequality into polar derivative.

  • If p(z) is a polynomial of degree n having all its zeros in |z| ≤ k, k ≥ 1, then for any complex number α with |α| ≥ k, and r ≥ 1, Aziz [1] proved $$\left{{\int}_{0}^{2{\pi}}\,{\left|1+k^ne^{i{\theta}}\right|^r}\,d{\theta}\right}^{\frac{1}{r}}\;{\max\limits_{{\mid}z{\mid}=1}}\,{\mid}p^{\prime}(z){\mid}\,{\geq}\,n\,\left{{\int}_{0}^{2{\pi}}\,{\left|p(e^{i{\theta}})\right|^r\,d{\theta}\right}^{\frac{1}{r}}.$$ In this paper, we obtain an improved extension of the above inequality into polar derivative. Further, we also extend an inequality on polar derivative recently proved by Rather et al. [20] into Lr-norm. Our results not only extend some known polynomial inequalities, but also reduce to some interesting results as particular cases.

Lichen Flora around the Korean Antarctic Scientific Station, King George Island, Antarctic

  • As part of the long-term monitoring projects on Antarctic terrestrial vegetation in relation to global climate change, a lichen floristical survey was conducted around the Korean Antarctic Station (King Sejong Station), which is located on Barton Peninsula, King George Island, in January and February of 2006. Two hundred and twenty-five lichen specimens were collected and sixty-two lichen species in 38 genera were identified by morphological characteristics, chemical constituents, TLC analysis and ITS nucleotide sequence analysis.

극직교 이방성 회전원판의 진동해석 및 임계속도 I : 정식화 및 해법 (Vibration Analysis and Critical Speeds of Rotating Polar Orthotropic Disks, Part I : Formulation and Solution Method)

  • Rotating annular disks are widely used in data storage devices such as CDs, DVDs(digital versatile disks), and HDs(hard disks). Higher data transfer rate in data storage disks could not be achieved by polycarbonate disks in the present market. The problem can be solved by applying the fiber-reinforce composite materials to the disks. In this paper, an application of composite materials to rotating disks is proposed to increase the critical speed. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating composite disks by the Galerkin method. The orthogonal functions are used in series solution. A companion paper(Part II) presents and discusses the numerical results of vibration analysis and critical speed for rotating polar orthotropic disk using the formulation and solution method given in this paper (Part I).
