The objective of this study is to predict behavior of a contaminant plume and concentration of contaminants in soil through tile relations between the concentrations of contaminants in groundwater and in soil on the shallow sandy aquifer contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The current state of the plume and its fate in the study area was simulated by using the MODFLOW-RT3D model and geochemical parameters of grounwater had been monitored and measured during 3 years (1999~2001). The relations between the concentrations of contaminants in each medium were taken from the investigation of site characterization conducted in 1999. Simulation results showed the center of the plume would migrate 407m twenty years later. At that time, the concentration would be decreased down to about 26 mg/$\ell$(93%). In comparison TEX concentration in the groundwater with that in the soil, the value of correlation coefficient (r=0.876) was as high as it could be used. Based on the high r-value, the linear equation was obtained from regression analysis. The results of model simulation by RT3D engine showed that the highest TEX concentration in the groundwater would be 58.8 mg/$\ell$ 16 years later, and then the TEX concentration in soil would be below the alarming level (80 mg/kg) of regulation criteria.
High-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied utilizing numerical and experimental methods with emphasis on recondensation ratio, and the dynamics of the laser induced vapor flow. In the numerical calculation, the temperature pressure, density and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are first obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method, and then the plume dynamics is calculated by using a commercial CFD package. To confirm the computation results, the probe beam deflection technique was utilized for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave. Discontinuities of properties and velocity over the Knudsen layer were investigated. Related with the analysis of the jump condition, the effect of the recondesation ratio on the plume dynamics was examined by comparing the pressure, density, and mass fraction of ablated aluminum vapor. To consider the effect of mass transfer between the ablation plume and air, unlike the most previous investigations, the equation of species conservation is simultaneously solved with the Euler equations. Therefore the numerical model computes not only the propagation of the shock front but also the distribution of the aluminum vapor. To our knowledge, this is the first work that employed a commercial CFD code in the calculation of pulsed ablation phenomena.
The geostationary satellite uses a liquid apogee engine, to obtain a required velocity increment to enter a geostationary orbit. However, as the liquid apogee engine operates in the vacuum, a considerable disbursement of exhaust plume flow, from the liquid apogee engine can trigger a backflow. As this backflow may possibly collide with the satellite directly, it can cause adverse effects such as surface contamination, thermal load, and altitude disturbance, that can generate performance reduction of the geostationary satellite. So, this study investigated exhaust plume behavior of 400 N grade liquid apogee engine numerically. To analyze exhaust plume behavior in vacuum condition, the DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) method based on Boltzmann equation is used. As a result, thermal fluid characteristics of exhaust plume such as temperature and number density, are observed.
A numerical model is investigated to predict a behavior of the gaseous volatile organic compounds and a subsurface contamination caused by them in the unsaturated zone. Two dimensional advective-dispersion equation caused by a density difference and two dimensional diffusion equation are computed by a finite difference method in the numerical model. A laboratory experiment is also carried out to compare the results of the numerical model. The dimensions of the experimental plume are 1.2m in length, 0.5m in height, and 0.05m in thickness. In comparing the result of 2 methods used in the numerical model with the one of the experiment respectively, the one of the advective-dispersion equation shows better than the one the diffusion equation.

Contaminant transport in porous media is characterized by solving an advection-dispersion equation(ADE). The ADE can cover equilibrium phenomena of interest, which include sorption, decay, and chemical reactions. Among these phenomena, sorption mechanism is described by several types of sorption isotherm. If we assume the sorption isotherm as linear, the solution of ADE can be easily procured. However, if we consider the sorption isotherm as non-linear isotherm like a Dual Reactive Domain Model (DRDM), the resulting differential equation becomes non-linear. In this case, the solution of ADE cannot be easily acquired by an analytic method. In this paper, we present the numerical analysis of ADE using a DRDM. The results reveal that even if sorption data may be fitted well using linear or non-linear isotherm, the characteristics of contaminant transport of the two cases are different from each other. To be concrete, the retardation of linear isotherm has stronger effect than that of the DRDM. As the non-linearity of sorption isotherm increases, the difference of retardation effects of the two cases becomes larger. For a pulse source, the maximum concentration of the linear model is higher than that of the DRDM, but the plume of the DRDM moves faster than that of the linear model. Behaviors of contaminant transport using the DRDM are consistent with common features of a linear model. For instance, biodegradation effect becomes larger as time goes by The faster the seepage velocity is, the faster the plume of contaminant moves. The plume of the contaminant is distributed evenly over overall domain in the event of high dispersion coefficient.
The precise calculation of gas absorption coefficient in the radiative transfer equation is very important to the prediction of radiative heat transfer induced from liquid engine plume in view of base insulation design. For this purpose, the WNB model for gas absorption coefficient is described with the selection of important parameters and then the calculated results are compared with those of SNB model for validation. Total emissivity, narrow band averaged intensity and total intensity are calculated and compared to the results of SNB model. As results, the total emissivity and the total intensity are well matched within 3.1% and roughly 5 % error, respectively. Moreover, the gas modeling database is constructed with estimation of the combustion gas composition of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ for liquid engine plume.
Numerical simulation of air-launched rockets from a helicopter was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic interference between air-launched rocket and helicopter. For this purpose, a three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes. An overset mesh technique was used to describe the relative motion between rocket and rocket launcher. The flow solver was coupled with six degree-of-freedom equation to predict the trajectory of free-flight rockets. For the validation, calculations were made for the impinging jet with inclined plate. The rotor downwash of helicopter was calculated and applied to simulation of air-launched rocket. It is shown that the rotor downwash has non-negligible effect on the air-launched rocket and its plume development.

A simple analytic model is proposed here to analyze the concentration deficit field caused by a large area of vegetated area. With non-dimensional deposition velocity chosen as small parameter, the regular perturbation method is exploited to derive the mass balance equation and the dynamic equations for the concentration deficit field, Analytic solutions to those equations are obtained in a closed form for several cases of interest, assuming that the concentration field is stationary and the plume can be nicely approximated as Gaussian for a point source. The results suggest that quite a negligible fraction (less than 1%) of the gaseous air pollutants emitted into the air is removed by the vegetated area of which width is 4 km in wind-wise direction, the typical dimension of the Restricted Development Zones around the metropolitan regions in South Korea.

Radiative properties of alumina particles which is the main element of the plume from booster and kick motor used for increasing thrust and insertion into the orbit is analyzed. In order to derive the wavelength integrated (i.e., gray) emissivity, emission term in radiative transfer equation is rearranged to be able to tie up with the parameters induced from fundamental particle scattering Mie theory. Result shows that derived gray emissivity with optical properties increases with temperature rising.
