  • In foreign country such as U.S.A and Japan, considerable research has been done regarding the spread of smoke in room of fire involvement by using computer. But, in our country it has not been. So, this paper presents a detailed qualitative description of phenomena which occures during typical fire scenarios through numerical analysis. This research, in the view of field model, is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution. And it is planned to analyze governing equation including smoke diffusion equation by numerical analysis with finite volume method and non-staggered grid system. The SIMPLE method for pressure-velocity couple and power-law scheme for convection terms are used. It shows that a plume is formed, hot plume is formed, hot plume gases impinge on the ceiling and they spread across it. then, it eventually reaches the bounding walls of the enclosure. It takes 60s for smoke to fill the enclosure.

  • A study on the fire and smoke behavior on experiments and analysis through STAR-CD in using about behavior analysis of the smoke. Kerosene of 3L in using on the experimental garden of 30cm in diameter same applies to heat release rate(HRR), buoyant force by Plume can be calculated at a rate of 1m/s. The result of experiment in average of velocity were 0.29m/s, and interpreted result were 0.28m/s. Besides, it is proved by interpreted that behavior of smoke movement can be not observed in the experiment. After smoke is Plume increased, ceiling-jet in formation being descend in smoke layer will be more thick smoke layer, and then vertical wall is collapsed in formation of wall-jet being descend. It is defined that smoke layer is more thick through descending course in wall-jet and ceiling-jet.

  • The performance and design analysis for a NWD cooling tower using a combined wet and dry type fill are numerically investigated and compared with the experimental results. The Stoecker's method is applied to the wet section and LMTD or NTU-Effectiveness method to the wet and dry sections. The efficiency ratio of the NWD cooling tower to a wet type crossflow cooling tower is 59.34%. The predicted result shows a good agreement with the experimental data within 1.4% error. Plume abatement is far better with a NWD cooling tower than a counterflow cooling tower. It costs less than a conventional wet/dry tower because the finned exchanger is eliminated. This method also leaves out complexity in structure and Intricacy in operation.

  • This paper presents the analysis of flowfield inside a low-density nozzle and its plume into near vacuum. The generalized hydrodynamics equations are numerically solved for the purpose with the help of modern computational fluid dynamic methods. The results taken along the nozzle are compared with those of Navier-Stokes equations and available experimental data. The plume outside the nozzle is also analyzed in order to examine the adverse effects of its impingements.

  • A supersonic rocket plum flowfield of kerosene/liquid-oxygen based propulsion system has been analysed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a 9-species 14-reaction finite-chemistry model. The result were compared with chemically frozen flow solution to investigate the effect of finite-rate chemistry on the plume flowfield. The computations were performed using a commercial CFD software, FLUENT 5. The finite-rate chemistry solution exhibited higher temperature caused by the reactions within the nozzle. All the chemical reactions within the plum were dominated only in the shear layer and behind the barrel shock reflection region where the temperatures are high and the effect of finite-rate chemical reactions on the flowfield was found to be insignificant. However, the present plume computation including the finite-rate chemical reaction within the plume has revealed major reactions occurring in the plum and their reaction mechanisms.

  • For the combat survivability, an infrared signature emitted from aircraft is needed to be predicted and analyzed. In this study, we studied the infrared signature from the exhaust plume from the viewpoint of Infrared(IR) detector. The Line-By-Line method using the radiation database is used for radiative property, and radiative intensity analysis is conducted along 1-D line of sight based on the radiative property. The numerical thermo-fluid field for the plume is conducted by ANSYS FLUENT, while setting the lines of sight having the different detection angle on the thermo-fluid field. We found the high IR signature on the line of sight passing through the locally high temperature region of the plume inside, and the strongest signature from the line of sight toward the nozzle surface. Based on this, it confirms the influence of the surface radiative emission on the infrared signature.

  • Since terrestrial input plays a major role in coastal primary production, an understanding of land-ocean coupling (LOC) is key to understand coastal ecological changes. In this study, the LOC has been classified into three stages (i.e., the baseflow, plume event and residual flow). In order to characterize its pattern in Nakdong River estuary, multi-platform data were obtained from remote sensing (geostationary ocean color image (GOCI)), in-situ measurement (marine environment information system (MEIS)), on-site measurement (discharge data and meteorological data). The MEIS data were grouped into three stages of LOC using principal component analysis (PCA), and the LOC (2013 ~ 2018) was examined at each stage using multi-platform data. In the Nakdong River estuary, the maximum value of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) was unexpectedly appeared during the plume event. It is assumed that there was no significant increase in turbidity, expected during the typical plume event, together with the weak flushing effect, caused the enhanced phytoplankton growth. Compared with other estuaries, LOC is common in estuaries affected by freshwater inflow, but LOC has different pattern depending on the size of the plume. While estuaries that form small plumes of about 10 km (low freshwater discharge and weak flushing effect) observed high chl-a in the plume event because the phytoplankton can response to the increased nutrient more rapidly. estuaries that form large plumes of more than 100 km est (high freshwater discharge and strong flushing effect) follow the typical LOC pattern conceptualized in this study (high chl-a in the residual flow).

  • When a plume flow exhausted from a lunar lander descent engine impinges on the lunar surface, regolith particles on the lunar surface will be dispersed due to a plume-surface interaction. If the dispersed particles collide with the lunar lander, some adverse effects such as a performance degradation can be caused. Thus, this study tried to predict the plume flow behaviors using the CFD methods. A nozzle inside region was analyzed by a continuum flow model based on the Navier-Stokes equations while the plume behaviors of the outside nozzle was performed by comparing and analyzing the individual results using the continuum flow model and the DSMC method. As a result, it was possible to establish an optimum procedure of the plume analysis for the lunar lander descent engine in the vacuum condition. In the future, it is expected to utilize the present results for the development of the Korean lunar lander.

  • DLN-2.6 combustion tuning was carried out for the maintenance of GE 7FA+e gas turbine at Seo-Incheon combined cycle power plant. DLN-2.6 combustion system has the higher level of yellow plume and combustion vibration problem in the initial operating mode than that of the base mode($100{\sim}160MW$). The objectives of this study are to investigate the causes of yellow plume and combustion vibration problems at the starting mode and to suggest the best operating condition for the reliable working of the real combustors. By the analysis of tuning data, we could conclude that a yellow plume is caused by the rich mixture(${\phi}{\sim}1$) in a PM 1 nozzle at mode 3($20{\sim}30MW$). In addition, the combustion vibration($120{\sim}140Hz$) might be related to the cold flow characteristics of PM 3 nozzles at mode 6B($40{\sim}45MW$).
