  • The opaque porcelain layer of porcelain-fused-to-metal(PFM) restoration is critical for the success of PFM restoration because it is the first layer placed over the treated alloy. But, the methods of opaquing technique have not been confirmed. Usually, the one layer method and two layer method have been used for the application of opaque porcelain. In the past, alloys with porcelain veneers which have been used successfully have contained various precious metals. Recent increase in the cost of precious metals stimulates considerable interest in nonprecious alloys. Although nickel-chromium alloys and nickel-chromium-beryllium alloys have been widely used, the use of cobalt-chromium alloys would be gradually increased with elimination of any potential risk of nickel-related allergic responses and/or beryllium-related toxic responses. This investigation examined one- and two-layer opaque porcelain applications to determine the effect on the bond strength of titanium added cobalt-chromium metal ceramic alloy. Bond strength of Ceramco II porcelain to titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy(2Dentitan) and gold-platinum-palladium alloy(Degudent H) were evaluated by direct shear bond strength test with Instron universal testing machine. The results were as follows; 1. When the mean shear bond strength of each experimental group were compared in $0.25cm^2$ unit area, the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/two layer method exhibited the greatest strength(79.7kg), followed by titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/one layer method(76.2kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/two layer method(71.4kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/one layer method(64.2kg). 2. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the two opaquing techniques for gold-platinum-palladium alloy and titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy. 3. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the gold-platinum-palladium alloy and the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of the galvanic corrosion behaviour of the titanium in contact with gold alloy, silva-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy using the immersion and electrochemical method. And the effects of galvallit couples between titanium and the dental alloys were assessed for their usefulness as materials for superstructure. The immersion method was performed by measuring the amount of metal elementsreleased by Inductivey coupled plasma emission spectroscopy(ICPES) The specimen of fifteen titanium plates, the five gold alloy, five silver-palladium, five nickel-chromium plates, and twenty acrylic resin plates ware fabricated, and also the specimen of sixty titanium plugs, the thirty gold alloy, thirty silver-palladium, and nickelc-hromium plugs were made. Thereafter, each plug of gold alloy, silver-palladium, and nickel-chromium inserted into the the titanium and acrylic resin plate, and also titanium plug inserted into the acrylic resin plate. The combination specimens uf galvanic couples immersed in 70m1 artificial saliva solution, and also specimens of four type alloy(that is, titanium, gold, silver-palladium and nickel-chromium alloy) plugs were immersed solely in 70m1 artificial sativa solution. The amount of metal elements released was observed during 21 weeks in the interval of each seven week. The electrochemical method was performed using computer-controlled potentiosta(Autostat 251. Sycopel Sicentific Ltd., U.K). The wax patterns(diameter 11.0mm, thickness,in 1.5mm) of four dental casting alloys were casted by centrifugal method and embedded in self-curing acrylic resin to be about $1.0cm^2$ of exposed surface area. Embedded specimens were polished with silicone carbide paper to #2,000, and ultrasonically cleaned. The working electrode is the specimen of four dental casting alloys, the reference electrode is a saturated calmel electrode(SCE) and the ounter electrode is made of platinum plate. In the artificial saliva solution, the potential scanning was carried out starting from-700mV(SCE) TO +1,000mV(SCE) and the scan rate was 75mV/min. Each polarization curve of alloy was recorded automatically on a logrithmic graphic paper by XY recorder. From the polarization curves of each galvanic couple, corrosion potential and corrosion rates, that is, corrosion density were compared and order of corrosion tendency was determined. From the experiments, the following results were obtained : 1. In the case of immersing titanium, gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloysolely in the artificial saliva solution(group 1, 2, 3, and 4), the total amount of metal elements released was that group 4 was greater about 2, 3 times than group 3, and about 7.8 times than group 2. In the case of group 1, the amount of titanium released was not found after 8 week(p<0.001). 2. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with alloy(group 5, 6), the total amount of metal elements released of group 5 and 6 was less than that of group 7, 8, 9, and 10(p<0.05). 3. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with silver-palladium alloy(group 7, 8), the total amount of metal elements released of group 7 was greater about twice than that of group 5, and that of group 8 was about 14 times than that of group 6(p<0.05). 4. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(group 9, 10), the total amount of metal elements released of group 9 and 10 was greater about 1.8-3.2 times than that of group 7 and 8, and was greater about 4.3~25 times than that of group 5 and 6(p<0.05). 5. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the difference of the area ratio of cathode and anode, the total amount of metal elements released was that group 5 was greater about 4 times than group 6, group 8 was greater about twice than group 7, and group 10 was greater about 1.5 times than group 9(p<0.05). 6. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the elasped time during 21 week in the interval of each 7 week, the amount of metal elements released was decreased markedly in the case of galvanic couples of the titanium in contact with gold alloy and silver-palladium alloy but the total amount of nickel and beryllium released was not decreased markedly in the case of galvanic couples of the titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(p<0.05). 7. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with gold alloy, galvanic current was lower than any other galvanic couple. 8. In the case of galvanic couples of titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy, galvanic current was highest among other galvanic couples.

  • The success of the porcelain fused to gold alloy restoration depends not only on the choice of materials but to a larger degree on the technical skills. The porcelain fused to metal(PFM) alloys containing gold are commonly use for dental purposes in dental laboratory. The gold-colored alloys contain primarily gold, platinum, palladium, and silver, with minimum amounts of such metals as tin, iridium, or titanium. The purpose of this study is on the metal-porcelain fusing layer in porcelain fused to high gold alloy Principal results are as follows. The hardness number(Hv) of PFG is respectively $140.2{\pm}12.6$ in as-casted, $164.3{\pm}14.3$ in heat-treated, $186.6{\pm}20.4$ in fired-treated. The formation of the fusing(intermediate) layer caused by components fusing the interface of porcelain and gold alloy. The main components of the fusing(intermediate) layer are Na, Al, Si, K, Zn, Zr and Ce. The intermediate layer formed by the 2nd firing is more larger than the intermediate layer formed by the 1st firing.

  • We investigated on the usefulness of MAR algorithm by making a comparison of the CT value between before and after applying the MAR algorithm in dual energy CT, using the various kinds of medical metals, causing the artifact to lead to the low image quality. As a result, the artifact was reduced in most cases (P<0.05); in particular, the artifact was highly reduced (P<0.05) using high density material, like alloy-stainless (reduced by 78.1%) and platinum, for example GDC coil (reduced by 76.1%). The effect of decreasing the Black hole artifact was outstanding in both the alloy-stainless and alloy-titanium (P<0.05). However, in case of GDC coil-a type platinum, white streak artifact was reduced effectively (P<0.05). Therefore, in case of patients who have medical metals inserted, we think that high-quality image information can be provided by decreasing the artifact caused by high density material through MAR algorithm in dual energy CT.

  • Carbon-supported ordered Pt-Ti alloy nanoparticles were prepared as a durable and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) via wet chemical reduction of Pt and Ti precursors with heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the prepared electrocatalysts with Ti precursor molar compositions of 40% (PtTi40) and 25% (PtTi25) had ordered $Pt_3Ti$ and $Pt_8Ti$ structures, respectively. Comparison of the ORR polarization before and after 1500 electrochemical cycles between 0.6 and 1.1 V showed little change in the ORR polarization curve of the electrocatalysts, demonstrating the high stability of the PtTi40 and PtTi25 alloys. Under the same conditions, commercial carbon-supported Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts exhibited a negative potential shift (10 mV) in the ORR polarization curve after electrochemical cycling, indicating degradation of the ORR activity.

  • Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used for orthopedic and dental implants for their superior mechanical properties, low modulus, excellent corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. In this study, corrosion behaviors of nanotube formed on the bone plate of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for dental use have been investigated. $TiO_2$ nanotubes were formed on the dental bone plates by anodization in $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.6 wt % NaF solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Electrochemical experiments were performed using a conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. Anodization was carried out using a scanning potentiostat (EG&G Co, Model 263A USA), and all experiments were conducted at room temperature. The surface morphology was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The corrosion behavior of the dental bone plates was examined using potentiodynamic test(potential range of -1500~2000 mV) in a 0.9% NaCl solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA). The inner diameter of nanotube was about 150~180 nm with wall thickness of about 20 nm. The interspace of nanotube to nanotube was 50 nm. The passive region of the nanotube formed bone plates showed the broad range compared to non-nanotube formed bone plates. The corrosion surface of sample was covered with corrosion products.

  • PURPOSE. In this study, the shear bond strengths (SBS) of luting cements to fixed superstructure metal surfaces under various seating forces were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seven different cements [Polycarboxylate (PCC), Glass-Ionomer (GIC), Zinc phospahate (ZPC), Self-adhesive resin (RXU), Resin (C&B), and Temporary cements ((RXT) and (TCS))] were bonded to a total number of 224 square blocks ($5{\times}5{\times}3mm$) made of one pure metal [Titanium (CP Ti) and two metal alloys [Gold-Platinum (Au-Pt) and Cobalt-Chrome (Co-Cr)] under 10 N and 50 N seating forces. SBS values were determined and data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA. Pairwise comparisons and interactions among groups were analyzed with Tukey's simultaneous confidence intervals. RESULTS. Overall mean scores indicated that Co-Cr showed the highest SBS values ($1.96{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00), while Au-Pt showed the lowest among all metals tested ($1.57{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00). Except for PCC/CP Ti, RXU/CP Ti, and GIC/Au-Pt factor level combinations (P<.00), the cements tested under 10 N seating force showed no significantly higher SBS values when compared to the values of those tested under 50 N seating force (P>.05). The PCC cement showed the highest mean SBS score ($3.59{\pm}0.07$) among all cements tested (P<.00), while the resin-based temporary luting cement RXT showed the lowest ($0.39{\pm}0.07$) (P<.00). CONCLUSION. Polycarboxylate cement provides reliable bonding performance to metal surfaces. Resin-based temporary luting cements can be used when retrievability is needed. GIC is not suitable for permanent cementation of fixed dental prostheses consisting of CP Ti or Au-Pt substructures.

  • In order to improve the current efficiency and reduce the energy consumption in the electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate, electrolytic properties of a perfluorosulfonic cation exchange membrane named PGN membrane and the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane in the electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate were studied and compared in a pilot electrolytic cell using a welded platinum titanium as the anode and a Pb-Sb alloy as the cathode. The effect of cell voltage, electrolyte flow rate and electrolysis time of the electrolytes on the current efficiency and the energy consumption were studied. The results indicated that the PGN membrane could improve current efficiency to 95.12% and reduce energy consumption to $1110kWh\;t^{-1}$ (energy consumption per ton of the ammonium persulfate generated) under the optimal operating conditions and the highest current efficiency of the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane was 72.61% with its lowest energy consumption of $1779kWh\;t^{-1}$. Among 5 times of the electrolysis of the electrolytes, the lowest current efficiency of the PGN membrane was 85.25% with the highest energy consumption of $1244kWh\;t^{-1}$ while the lowest current efficiency of the $Al_2O_3$ ceramic membrane was 67.44% with the highest energy consumption of $1915kWh\;t^{-1}$, which suggested the PGN membrane could be used in the 5-stage electrolytic cell for the industrially continuous electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate. Therefore the PGN membrane can be efficient to improve the current efficiency and reduce the energy consumption and can be applied in the industrial electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate.
