Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most versatile semiconductors, and one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures have attracted significant interest for use in ultraviolet (UV) lasers, photochemical sensors, and photocatalysts, among other applications. It is known that 1D ZnO nanowires can be fabricated readily owing to the anisotropic growth of ZnO along the [0001] direction. However, this type of growth results in a decrease in the surface area of the (0001) plane, which plays a vital role not only in UV lasing but also in the photocatalytic process. Thus, we attempted to synthesize ZnO crystals with an increased polar surface area by controlling the crystal growth process. The purpose of this review is to propose a simple route for the synthesis of plate-like ZnO crystals with highly enhanced polar surfaces and to explore their feasibility for use in UV lasers as well as as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent. In addition, we highlight the recent progress made in the pilot-scale synthesis of plate-like ZnO crystals for industrial applications.
As one of the most versatile semiconductors, zinc oxide (ZnO) with one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures has been significantly developed for the application of ultraviolet (UV) lasers, photochemical sensors, photocatalysts, and so on. Such 1-D nanowires could be easily achieved due to the anisotropic growth rate along the [0001] direction. However, such typical growth habit leads to decrease the surface area of the (0001) plane, which plays a central role in not only UV lasing action but also photocatalytic reaction. This fact lead us to develop ZnO crystal with enhanced polar surface area through crystal growth control. The purpose of this review is to provide readers a simple route to plate-type ZnO crystal with highly enhanced polar surfaces and their applications for UV-laser, photocatalyst, and antibacterial agents. In addition, we will highlight the recent study on pilot-scale synthesis of plate-type ZnO crystal for industrial applications.

ZnO nanoplates were prepared by seed-mediated soft-solution process. Photocatalytic property of ZnO nanoplates was superior to that of conventional ZnO nanoparticles owing to the enhanced (0001) plane with large defect sites. In addition, we found that silica coating method could provide to reduce cytotoxicity of ZnO nanoplates. Finally, we have successfully synthesized for the first time large-scale synthesis of plate-type ZnO as few hundreds gram scale for industrial applications through controlling various reagents of growth solution.

Nano sized ZnO particle as 20-30nm applies for material, pigments, rubber additives, gas sensors, varistors, fluorescent substance as well as new material such as photo-catalyst, sensitizer, fluorescent material. ZnO with a particle size in the range 20-30nm has provided to be an excellent UV blocking material in the cosmetics industry, which can be used in sunscreen product to enhance the sun protection factor and natural makeup effect. But pure ZnO particles application limits for getting worse wearing feeling. We make high-functional inorganic-composite that coated with nano-ZnO on the plate-type particle such as sericite, boron nitride and bismuthoxychloride. In this experiment, we synthesized composite powder using hydrothermal precipitation method. The starting material was ZnCl$_2$ Precipitation materials were used hexamethylenetetramine(HMT) and urea. We make an experiment with changing as synthesis factors that are concentrations of starting material, precipitation materials, nuclear formation material, reaction time, and reaction temperature. We analyzed composite powder's shape, crystallization and UV-blocking ability with FE-SEM, XRD, FT-IR, TGA-DTA, In vitro SPF test. The user test was conducted by product's formulator. In the results of this study, nanometer sized ZnD was coated regardless of the type of plate-powder at fixed condition range. When the coated plate-powders were applied in pressed powder product, the glaze of powder itself decreased, but natural make-up effect, spreadability, and adhesionability were increased.

Y-type barium ferrite ($Ba_2Me_2Fe_{12}O_{22};$ Me=Zn, Co, Cu) expected as an electromagnetic wave absorber were prepared by the glass-ceramic method. The glasses with composition of $0.1ZnO{\cdot}0.9(xB_2O_3{\cdot}yBaO{\cdot}(1-x-y)Fe_2O_3)$ were prepared. Single-phase powders of Y type barium ferrite were obtained with the composition $0.1ZnO{\cdot}0.9(0.2B_2O_3{\cdot}0.5BaO{\cdot}0.3Fe_2O_3)$. The shape of Y-type crystals depended strongly on the heating temperature and changed from a plate-like hexagon to a complex polyhedron with increasing heating temperature. Correlation was recognized between saturation magnetization and crystal shape. Electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics was affected by the saturation magnetization and crystal shape.

For mass product of nanocrystalline ZnO ultrafine powders, self-sustaining combustion process(SCP) and ultrasonic spray combustion method(USCM) were applied at the same time. Ultrasonic spray gun was attached on top of the vertical type furnace. The droplet was sprayed into reaction zone of the furnace to form SCP which produces spherical shape with soft agglomerate crystalline ZnO particles. To characterize formed particles, fuel and oxidizing agent for SCP were used glycine and zinc nitrate or zinc hydroxide. Respectively, with changing combustion temperature and mixture ratio of oxidizing agent and fuel, the best ultrasonic spray conditions were obtained. To observe ultrasonic spray effect, two types of powder synthesis processes were compared. One was directly sprayed into furnace from the precursor solution (Type A), the other directly was heated on the hot plate without using spray gun (Type B). Powder obtained by type A was porous sponge shape with heavy agglomeration, but powder obtained using type B was finer primary particle size, spherical shape with weak agglomeration and bigger value of specific surface area. 9/ This can be due to much lower reaction temperature of type B at ignition time than type A. Synthesized nanocrystalline ZnO powders at the best ultrasonic spray conditions have primary particle size in range 20~30nm and specific surface area is about 20m$^2$/g.

In this study, we have prepared pure planar-type ZnO and calamine powder containing both ZnO and Fe2O3 components as a raw material for cosmetics with UV and blue band blocking functions. The planar-type ZnO ceramic powder having a high aspect ratio in the range of 20:1 to 50:1 was synthesized by precipitation method in a zinc acetate and sodium citrate mixed solution with the electrolyte obtained by power generation with a zinc-air battery. The content of Fe2O3 in the artificial calamine ceramic powder could be increased by increasing the amount of iron chloride solution added, and in this case, some of the blue region of visible light and ultraviolet light were remarkably absorbed. When potassium acetate was added, the decomposition of the Zn(OH)42- anion in the solution was promoted to facilitate the growth of ZnO crystal in the form of a barrier wall in the vertical direction on the (0001) plane, which could increase UV absorption by providing more opportunities. By controlling the amount of iron chloride solution and potassium acetate solution added, the composition and shape of the thin film plate-shaped artificial calamine ceramic powder can be optimized, and when applied to cosmetic formulations, the light transmittance of the blue region can be greatly reduced.

ZnO films were fabricated on p-type Si(100) wafer ITO glass and quartz glass by the sol-gel process using zinc acetate dihydrate as starting material. A homogeneous and stable solution was prepared by dissolving the zinc acetate dihydrate in a solution of 2-methoxyethanol and monoethanolamine (MEA). ZnO films were deposited by spin-coating at 2800 rpm for 25 s and were dried on a hot plate at $250^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Crystallization of the films was carried out at $400^{\circ}C$~$800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis transmittance spectroscopy, FTIR transmittance spectroscopy and Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements have been used to study the structural and optical properties of the films. ZnO films highly oriented along the (002)plane were obtained. In all cases the films were found to be transparent (above 70%) in visible range with a sharp absorption edge at wavelengths of about 380nm, which is very close to the intrinsic band-gap of ZnO(3.2 eV). The low temperature band-edge photoluminescence revealed a complicated multi-line structure in terms of bound exciton complexes and the phonon replicas.

We have studied structural, optical, and electrical properties of the Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films being usable in transparent conducting oxides. The GZO thin films were deposited on the corning 1737 glass plate by the RF magnetron sputtering system. To find optimal properties of GZO for transparent conducting oxides, the Ar gas in sputtering process was varied as 40, 60, 80 and 100 sccm, respectively. As reaction gas decreased, the crystallinity of GZO thin film was increased, the optical bandgap of GZO thin film increased. The transmittance of the film was over 80% in the visible light range regardless of the changes in reaction gas. The measurement of Hall effect characterizes the whole thin film as n-type, and the electrical property was improved with decreasing reaction gas. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of the GZO thin films were affected by Ga dopant content in GZO thin film.

We have studied structural, optical, and electrical properties of the Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films being usable in transparent conducting oxides. The AZO thin films were deposited on the corning 1737 glass plate by the RF magnetron sputtering system. To find optimal properties of AZO for transparent conducting oxides, the RF power in sputtering process was varied as 40 W, 60 W, and 80 W, respectively. As RF power increased, the crystallinity of AZO thin film was decreased, the optical bandgap of AZO thin film increased. The transmittance of the film was over 80% in the visible light range regardless of the changes in RF power. The measurement of Hall effect characterizes the whole thin film as n-type, and the electrical property was improved with increasing RF power. The structural, optical, and electrical properties of the AZO thin films were affected by Al dopant content in AZO thin film.
