The objective of this work is to predict the failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and the modes of failure, including the onset of delamination, of thin, flat, square symmetric laminates under the action of uni-axial compression. Two progressive failure analyses, one using Hashin criterion and the other using Tensor polynomial criteria, are used in conjunction with the finite element method. First order shear deformation theory and geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense have been employed. Five different types of lay-up sequence are considered for laminates with all edges simply supported. In addition, two boundary conditions, one with all edges fixed and other with mixed boundary conditions for $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ quasi-isotropic laminate have also been considered to study the effect of boundary restraints on the failure loads and the corresponding modes of failure. A comparison of linear and nonlinear results is also made for $({\pm}45/0/90)_{2s}$ quasi-isotropic laminate. It is observed that the maximum difference between the failure loads predicted by various criteria depend strongly on the laminate lay-ups and the flexural boundary restraints. Laminates with clamped edges are found to be more susceptible to failure due to the transverse shear and delamination, while those with the simply supported edges undergo total collapse at a load slightly higher than the fiber failure load.

An analysis method for the electromagnetic scattering of a tE polarized plane wave from a periodic strip grating over a grounded dielectric slab is consisered from the viewpoint of reflectio ngraing problem. The strip gratings showing bragg and off-bragg balzing phenomena at the frequency of 10GHz are designed, respectively. The strip grating structure is implemented using aluminum plate (hround conductor), paraffin(dielectric material ; .xi.$_{\gamma}$=2.24) and copper (strip conductor ; 0.08mm thickness). The experimental results (reflection power) for bragg as well as off-bragg blazing phenomenon have been compared with the theoretical results and fairly good agreements between theory and experiment have been observed.ed.

In order to calculate the relation between the hydrogen and the hydrogen absorption metals in the atomic level, Embedded Atom Method(EAM) is recommended. In this study, we had constructed the EAM programs from constitutive formulas and parameters of the hydrogen and palladium for the purpose of predicting the expansion behavior on hydrogen absorbing in the geometric shape of hydrogen absorption metals, as palladium bars and plates. And the EAM analyses data were compared with the experiment data by using electrochemical method. As results, it is note that the expansion rate in thickness of the palladium plate model by EAM analyses is about 4 times larger than width and length, be similar to experiment results. Also, in the microscopic and macroscopic level the expansion behavior through EAM analyses show good agreement with experiment data.

In this paper, a novel design method for an ultra-wide band TEM horn antenna is proposed on the basis of parallel plate waveguide theory. A principle of TEM modes generation is analyzed and the characteristics of this antenna are experimentally investigated. The proposed TEM horn antenna has an exponentially tapered structure to increase matching bandwidth. Also, the designed TEM horn has shortened length but increased aperture so that the bandwidth for cutoff frequency is increased. The measured result show that the proposed TEM hem antenna has the frequency band of 75 MHz to 1200 MHz for VSWR less than 2.0 and the bandwidth of the TEM horn becomes more than twice comparing to that of a linearly tapered TEM hem. It is anticipated that the manufactured antenna is applicable to UWB systems for impulse response measurement.

This paper presents the fatigue characteristics of LIPCA (LIghtweight Piezo-Composite Actuator) device system. The LIPCA device system is composed of a piezoelectric ceramic layer and fiber reinforced lightweight composite layers. Typically a PZT ceramic layer is sandwiched by a top fiber layer with low CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) and base layers with high CTE. The advantages of the LIPCA design are weight reduction by using the lightweight fiber reinforced plastic layers without compromising the generation of high force and large displacement and design flexibility by selecting the fiber direction and the size of prepreg layers. To predict the degradation of actuation performance of LIPCA due to fatigue, the cyclic electric loading tests using PZT specimens were performed and the strain for a given excitation voltage was measured during the test. The results from the PZT fatigue test were implemented into CLPT (Classical Laminated Plate Theory) model to predict the degradation of LIPCA's actuation displacement. The fatigue characteristic of PZT was measured using a test system composed of a supporting jig, a high voltage power supplier, data acquisition board, PC, and evaluated.
This study investigates a geometrical nonlinear dynamic behaviors of laminated skew plates made of advanced composite materials (ACM). Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration are used for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of cutout sizes, skew angles and lay up sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters are studied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed for this study. The several numerical results were in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates with or without central cutouts, and the new results reported in this paper show the significant interactions between the cutout, skew angles and layup sequence in the laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guideline of skew laminates is given.

This paper describes an automated system for analyzing the stress intensity factors(SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. A geometry model, i.e.a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delauuay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack fornt are shifted at the quarter-points are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. THe complete finite element (FE) model generated, i.e the mesh with material properties and boundary conditions is given to one of the commercial FE codes, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. To demonstrate practical performance of the present system, a semi- elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to tension is solved.

Variable polarity (VP) arc welding is known as an effective solution for aluminum thanks to the cleaning effect, which means oxide removal, during the DCEP (direct current electrode positive) period. In this research, VP GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) is adopted for lap joint fillet welding of 3mm thickness 5052 aluminum alloy. Various welding currents and DCEP duty cycles are applied as welding conditions with a fixed welding speed to investigate the influence of DCEP characteristics on weld bead formation. Results show a tendency of higher heat input for higher DCEP duty cycle, which result does not follow conventional arc theory because it is known that DCEN (DC electrode negative) polarity is more efficient for heat input than is DCEP. This phenomenonhas recently been reported by several VP-GTA researchers and is still controversial because the mechanism of oxide removal is not yet clear except for the previous, well-known idea of "ion bombardment", which cannot explain the situation. Finally, proper usage conditions for VP-GTAW are suggested; then, further, related theoretical topics in the field of cathode physics are brieflyintroduced.

To measure springback ratio of thin sheet or plate, winding bend rig is made. It bends a specimen with keeping its curva-ture constant and measure the bending angles before and after release of bending load. To check the performance of the bend rig, we calculated the bending moment by two ways which are based on simple beam theory. One is that the bending moment is calculated by using the results of bending test, and the other is that the moment is calculated by using the results of tensile tests. The former may entails the effect of the other is that the moment is calculated by using the results of tensile tests. The former may entails the effect of the friction between bending pin of the rig and surface of specimen, but the latter does not contain any effects of the friction since the bending moment is obtained by using tensile tests. Never-theless, the values of the two bending moments shows the same level of bending moment, which implies that the friction does not influence on the presence of friction within the scope of the test performed in this experiment. This phenomenon is explained theoretically by using moment equilibrium.

This paper intends to investigate the effects of speed fluctuation caused by the cogging torque in permanent magnetic motors on the stability of the transverse vibration for a spinning disk. Based on the Kirchhoff\`s plate theory and the assumed mode methods, a set of discretized equations of motion were derived for an annular disk rotating with a harmonically varying speed. Then, a perturbation method using the multiple time scales was employed and stability boundaries were determined explicitly in terms of the magnitude and frequency of speed fluctuation, a nominal sped and the modal characteristics of the disk. It is found that parametric resonance occurs at several speed ranges and a single mode or a combination of two modes are involved to cause instability. It is also observed that unstable regions become broadened as the spinning speed increases or two modes are combined in parametric instability. As numerical simulations, stability analysis of a conventional CD-ROM drive was performed. Results of this work can e used as guidelines for motor design and operations with low vibration.
