Motion reduction of an offshore structure at resonant frequency is essential for avoiding critical damage to the topside and mooring system. A damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion of a floating structure by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. In this study, the heave motion responses of a circular cylinder with an impermeable and a permeable damping plate attached at the bottom of the cylinder were investigated thru a model test. The viscous damping coefficients for various combinations of porosity were obtained from a free-decay test by determining the ratio between any pair of successive amplitudes. Maximum energy dissipation occurred at a porous plate with a porosity P = 0.1008. Experimental results for regular and irregular waves were compared with an analytical solution by Cho (2011). The measured heave RAO and spectrum reasonably followed the trends of the predicted values. A significant motion reduction at resonant frequency was pronounced and the heaving-motion energy calculated by the integration of the area under the heave motion spectrum was reduced by more than 75% by the damping plate. However, additional energy dissipation by eddies of strong vorticity and flow separation inside a porous damping plate was not found in the present experiments.
This paper describes motion stability of a spar platform with and without a damping plate in regular waves. The heave and pitch motion equation is derived in terms of Mathieu equation and the stability diagram is obtained. It is shown that the spar platform with damping plate has smaller unstable region than that without damping plate in the stability diagram. Model tests are carried out to verify the mathematical analysis. Under the condition that the pitch natural period is approximately double the heave natural period and the heave motion is amplified at heave resonance, unstable pitch motions are evoked. However the unstable motion is stabilized in cases of spar platform with damping plate. Therefore the damping plate is an effective device to stabilize the motion of spar platform.
An adaptive-scale damage detection strategy based on a wavelet finite element model (WFEM) for thin plate structures is established in this study. Equations of motion and corresponding lifting schemes for thin plate structures are derived with the tensor products of cubic Hermite multi-wavelets as the elemental interpolation functions. Sub-element damages are localized by using of the change ratio of modal strain energy. Subsequently, such damages are adaptively quantified by a damage quantification equation deduced from differential equations of plate structure motion. WFEM scales vary spatially and change dynamically according to actual needs. Numerical examples clearly demonstrate that the proposed strategy can progressively locate and quantify plate damages. The strategy can operate efficiently in terms of the degrees-of-freedom in WFEM and sensors in the vibration test.

This study investigates the dynamic analysis of a transversely isotropic thin plate. The plate is made of hyperelastic John's material and its constitutive law is obtained by taken the Frechect derivative of the highlighted energy function with respect to the geometry of deformation. The three-dimensional equation governing the motion of the plate is expressed in terms of first Piola-Kirchhoff's stress tensor. In the reduction to an equivalent two-dimensional plate equation, the obtained model generalizes the classical plate equation of motion. It is obtained that the plate under consideration exhibits harmonic force within its planes whereas this force varnishes in the classical plate model. The presence of harmonic forces within the planes of the considered plate increases the natural and resonance frequencies of the plate in free and forced vibrations respectively. Further, the parameter characterizing the transversely isotropic structure of the plate is observed to increase the plate flexural rigidity which in turn increases both the natural and resonance frequencies. Finally, this study reinforces the view that non-classical models of problems in elasticity provide ample opportunity to reveal important phenomena which classical models often fail to apprehend.
For reappearance of driving perception in a driving simulator, a washout algorithm is required. This algorithm can reappear the vehicle driving motions within workspace of the driving simulator. However classical washout algorithm contains several problems such as selection of order, cut-off frequency of filters, generation of wrong motion cues by characteristics of filters, etc. In order to overcome these problems, this paper proposes a new washout algorithm which gives more accurate sensations to drivers. The algorithm consists of an artificial inclination of the motion plate and human perception model with band pass filter and dead zone. As a result of this study, the motion of a real car could be reappeared satisfactorily in the driving simulator and the workspace of motion plate is restrained without scaling factor.
The response of a plate-column system having five-degree-of-freedom supported by an elastic foundation and subjected to static lateral load, harmonic ground motion and earthquake motion is studied. Two Winkler foundation models are assumed: a conventional model which supports compression and tension and a tensionless model which supports compression only. The governing equations of the problem are obtained, solved numerically and the results are presented in figures to demonstrate the behavior of the system for various values of the system parameters comparatively for the conventional and the tensionless Winkler foundation models.
Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.
The present study deals with the conceptual design of a motion reduction device for a floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation platform. A damping plate attached to the bottom of a column of a large semi-submersible is introduced to reduce the motion of the platform. Performance analyses on various shapes and configurations of damping plates were performed using the potential flow solver, and the appropriate configuration and size of the damping plate were selected based on the numerical results. In order to see the effect of viscous damping, a small scale model test was performed in a 2D wave flume. The performances of five different damping plates were measured and discussed based on the results of free decay tests and regular wave tests.
