Buildings featuring a transfer structure can be commonly found in metropolitan cities situated in regions of lower seismicity. A transfer structure can be in the form of a rigid plate or an array of deep girders positioned at the podium level of the building to support the tower structure of the building. The anomalous increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls above the podium is a major cause for concern. Design guidance on how to quantify these adverse effects is not available. In this paper a simplified method for quantifying the increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls is presented. In view of the very limited ductile nature of this type of construction the analysis presented herein is based on linear elastic behaviour.

Fatigue test is conducted to see the effect of pre-indentation on the fatigue crack retardation of Al5052-H18 plate. Metallographic observation is introduced to deduce the relationship between fatigue crack retardation and fracture appearance with indentation. The grain size of the specimen becomes smaller with the increase of indentation force and the plastic zone is formed with the decrease of grain size. The fatigue striations are appeared densely as the Indentation force becomes higher. Metallographic observation and fatigue test results show that the indentation force has the limited value in improving fatigue crack retardation. Important point to retard the fatigue crack growth is that the crack growth path should pass through the indented area.
This paper presents a study of the effect of rolling temperature, roll gap (pass height), initial specimen size and steel grades of specimens on the roll force in round-oval-round pass sequence by applying approximate method and verifications through single stand pilot rod rolling tests. The results show that the predicted roll forces are in good agreement with the experimentally measured ones. The approximate model is independent of the change of roll gap, specimen size and temperature. Thus, the generality of the prediction methodology employed in the approximate model is proven. This study also demonstrates that Shida's constitutive equation employed in the approximate model needs to be corrected somehow to be applicable for the medium and high carbon steels in a lower temperature interval (700∼900$\^{C}$).
As known generally, when permanent magnets whose poles are upward and downward in order, arranged into the circumferential direction rotate under the conducting plate, the rotating force acts on the plate as well as the repulsive force. If the magnetic field by the magnet wheel(the above rotating permanent magnets) is partially shielded, the magnet wheel over open region can be a linear induction motor. The distinct feature from induction motor is that the traveling magnet field is produced by the moving permanent magnet instead of ac current. Furthermore, a variation of the open region changes the direction of the thrust force. In this paper, we introduce a concept of the linear actuator using the magnet wheel. Under the above shielding condition, a few simulation results and its verification from a simple test setup are described.

A numerical simulation for particle collection efficiency in a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been performed. Method of characteristics and finite differencing method (MOC-FDM) were employed to obtain electric field and space charge density, and lattice boltzmann method (LBM) was used to predict the Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow according to the ion convection. Large eddy simulation (LES) was considered for turbulent flow and particle simulation was performed by discrete element method (DEM) which considered field charging, electric force, drag force and wall-collision. One way coupling from FDM to LBM was used with small and low density particle assumption. When the charged particle collided with the collecting plate, particle-wall collision was calculated for re-entertainment effect and the effect of gravity force was considered.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatigue safety and deformation of housing in plate rolling process. For this, we carried out 3-dimensional FEM analysis for housing considering design variations of housing structure. It showed that the housing with rounds under a column is benefits to control thickness accuracy of rolled material, due to smaller elastic deformation and maximum effective stress. Also, we calculated the fatigue safety factors, the ratios of the pulsating equivalent fatigue limit to the maximum tensile stresses analyzed using the equipment force and normal rolling force.

This paper presents the new structure of a spindle motor for hard disk drive (HDD). It can produce axial force as well as torque without a pulling plate or a pulling magnet required for the normal operation of a hydrodynamic bearing in rotating-shaft structure. The proposed models have different air gap length along the axial direction by changing the thickness of permanent magnet (PM). One has a single slope and the other has double slopes on the surface of PM. For the design of the proposed models, variables are defined and its effects on the motor performances are investigated by 3-demensional finite element analysis (FEA). The equi-performance curves are investigated for the main characteristics of the spindle motor such as generated torque, axial force and torque ripple ratio. The validity of the proposed models is verified by the feasibility study and performance evaluation.

This paper presents a finite element analysis on impedance parameters of anchor plates of structural cables under the change in cable forces. To achieve the objective, four approaches are implemented as follows: Firstly, theoretical background of electro-mechanical impedance is described. Secondly, anchor plates of structural cables are selected to experimentally examine the relationship between impedance parameters and cable force changes. Thirdly, finite element analysis is performed to verify the experimental results. Fourthly, a comparison between the experimental and numerical analysis on impedance parameters of anchor plate of structural cables under cable force changes is carried out.

Steel beam-to-column joints are often subjected to a combination of bending and axial forces. The level of axial forces in the joint may be significant, typical of pitched-roof portal frames, sway frames or frames with incomplete floors. Current specifications for steel joints do not take into account the presence of axial forces (tension and/or compression) in the joints. A single empirical limitation of 10% of the beam's plastic axial capacity is the only enforced provision in Annex J of Eurocode 3. The objective of the present paper is to describe some experimental and numerical work carried out at the University of Coimbra to try to extend the philosophy of the component method to deal with the combined action bending moment and axial force.
To design the Molded Case Circuit Breaker(MCCB) requires electromagnetic analysis in contact system when the circuit breakers interrupt fault currents. This paper has made sure that there are two ways increasing arc driving force, one is a change of contact point and the other way inserts additionally the magnetic plate. Finally, we have carried out the analysis of eddy current to identify a decrease of arc driving force because of fault currents. In this paper, MCCB models have been analyzed base on 3D-FEM by Maxwell program.
