A bellows is a component installed in the automobile exhaust system to reduce the impact from an engine. It's stiffness has a great influence on the natural frequency of the system. Therefore, it must be designed to keep the specified stiffness that requires in the system. This study present the finite element analysis of U-typed bellows using a curved conical frustum element and the shape optimal design with specified stiffness. The finite element analysis is verified by comparing with the experimental results. In the shape optimal design, the weight is considered as the cost function. The specified stiffness from the system design is transformed to equality constraints. The formulation has inequality constraints imposed on the fatigue limit, the natural frequencies, the buckling load and the manufacturing conditions. A procedure for shape optimization adopts a thickness, a corrugation radius, and a length of annular plate as optimal design variables. The external loading conditions include the axial and lateral loads with a boundary condition fixed at an end of the bellows. The recursive quadratic programming algorithm is selected to solve the problem. The result are compared with the existing bellows, and the characteristics of the bellows is investigated through the optimal design process. The optimized shape of the bellows are expected to give quite a good guideline to the practical design.

The present work is an experimental and analytical study on a flexible disk rotating close to a rigid rotating disk in open air. In the analytical study, the air flow in the gap between the flexible disk and the rigid disk is modeled using Navier-Stokes and continuity equations while the flexible disk is modeled using the linear plate theory. The flow equations are discretized using the cell centered finite volume method (FVM) and solved numerically with semi-implicit pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE algorithm). The spatial terms in the disk equation are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM) and the time integration is performed using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental test-rig is designed to investigate the dynamics of the flexible disk when rotating close to a co-rotating, a counter-rotating and a fixed rigid disk, which works as a stabilizer. The effects of rotational speed, initial gap height and inlet-hole radius on the flexible disk displacement and its vibration amplitude are investigated experimentally for the different types of stabilizer. Finally, the analytical and experimental results are compared.

The application of a feedback control system in robotic arc welding is becoming more and more demanding than ever before. This requirement arises from the fact that robotic arc welding process needs no manual operator to monitor and manipulate the process parameters and hence a means of controlling the quality of the robotic arc welding process becomes apparent. Arc force sensor employed in this research to monitor the bead geometry of the arc welding process, A relationship between the bead dimension and the arc force distributions was established. Experimental configuration for measurement of arc force was used to quantify the changes in the arc force distributions of the plate being welded. Arc force sensor mounted at the end of the robot wrist was employed to measure the arc force applied to the weld. The sensor information was the used to establish a relationship between welding current and arc force. Arc force sensor have shown to be on of the most sophisticated technique to monitor perturbations that occurred during arc welding process.

In this paper, we present a non-linear integer programming by genetic algorithm (GA) for available sizes of stiffener or thickness of plate in a job site. GA can rapidly search for the approximate global optimum under complicated design environment such as ship. Meanwhile it can handle the optimization problem involving discrete design variable. However, there are many parameters have to be set for GA, which greatly affect the accuracy and calculation time of optimum solution. The setting process is hard for users, and there are no rules to decide these parameters. In order to overcome these demerits, the optimization for these parameters has been also conducted using GA itself. Also it is proved that the parameters are optimal values by the trial function. Finally, we applied this method to compass deck of ship where the vibration problem is frequently occurred to verify the validity and usefulness of nonlinear integer programming.

The quality of steel plate products is determined by the number of defects and the process problems are estimated by shapes of defects. Therefore pinholes defects of cold rolled steel have to be controlled. In order to improve productivity and quality of products, within each production process, the product is inspected by an adequate inspection system individually in the lines of steelworks. Among a number of inspection systems, we focus on the pinholes detection system. In this paper, we propose an embedded system using FPGA which can detect pinholes defects. The proposed system is smaller and more flexible than a traditional system based on expensive frame grabbers and PC. In order to detect consecutive defects, FPGAs acquire two dimensional image and process the image in real time by using correlation of lines. The proposed pinholes detection algorithm decreases arithmetic operations of image processing and also we designed the hardware to shorten the data path between logics due to decreasing propagation delay. The experimental results show that the proposed embedded system detects the reliable number of pinholes in real time.
This paper proposes an advanced circuit for the capacitive type fingerprint sensor signal processing and an effective isolation structure for minimizing an electrostatic discharge(ESD) influence and for removing a signal coupling noise of each sensor pixel. The proposed detection circuit increases the voltage difference between a ridge and valley about $80\%$ more than old circuit. The test chip is composed of $160\;\times\;192$ array sensing cells $(9,913\times11,666\;um^2).$ The sensor plate area is $58\;\times\;58\;um^2$ and the pitch is 60um. The image resolution is 423 dpi. The chip was fabricated on a 0.35um standard CMOS process. It successfully captured a high-quality fingerprint image and performed the registration and identification processing. The sensing and authentication time is 1 sec(.) with the average power consumption of 10 mW at 3.0V. The reveal ESD tolerance is obtained at the value of 4.5 kV.
The attitude control of a double inverted pendulum with a periodical disturbance at link top is dealt in this paper. The proposed system is consisted of the double inverted pendulum and a disturbance link. The lower link is hinged on the plate to free for rotation in the vertical plane. The upper link is connected to the lower link through a DC motor. The DC motor is used to control the posture of the pendulum by adjusting the position of the upper link. The periodical disturbance can be generated by the additional link attached at the end of link 2 through another DC motor, which is the modeling of a posture for a biped supporting with one leg. The motor for the joint simulates the knee joint(or hip joint) and the disturbance for the legs moving in air. The algorithm for controlling a proposed inverted pendulum is consisted of a state feedback control and a fuzzy logic controller. The fuzzy controller keeps the center of gravity of the biped within the specified range through the nonlinear feedback compensator. The state feedback control takes over the role to maintain a desired posture regardless the disturbance at the link top. In these case, the change of the angle and COG of an upper link is compensated with on-line. Simulations with a mathematical model are conducted to show the validity of the proposed controller.
Advanced signal processing techniques have been long introduced and widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). In our research, we applied several signal processing approaches for our embedded ultrasonic structural radar (EUSR) system to obtain improved damage detection results. The EUSR algorithm was developed to detect defects within a large area of a thin-plate specimen using a piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS) array. In the EUSR, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was first applied for signal de-noising. Secondly, after constructing the EUSR data, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for the time-frequency analysis. Then the results were compared thereafter. We eventually chose continuous wavelet transform to filter out from the original signal the component with the excitation signal's frequency. Third, cross correlation method and Hilbert transform were applied to A-scan signals to extract the time of flight (TOF) of the wave packets from the crack. Finally, the Hilbert transform was again applied to the EUSR data to extract the envelopes for final inspection result visualization. The EUSR system was implemented in LabVIEW. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted and have verified that, with the advanced signal processing approaches, the EUSR has enhanced damage detection ability.
In this paper, the optimal design of vibration control system for smart structures has been investigated semi-analytically via the optimization of geometric parameters like the placements and sizes of piezoelectric sensors and actuators (S/As) bonded on the structures. The criterion based on the maximization of energy dissipation was adopted for the optimization of the control system. Based on the sensing and actuating equations, the total energy stored in the system which is used as the objective function was analytically derived with design variables explicitly presented. Two cases of single and combined vibration modes were addressed for a simply supported beam and a simply supported cylindrical shell. For single vibration mode, the optimal distributions of the piezoelectric S/As could be obtained analytically. However, the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method has to be employed to solve those which violated the prescribed constraints and to solve the case of combined vibration modes. The results of three examples, which include a simply supported beam, a simply supported cylindrical shell and a simply supported plate, showed good agreement with those obtained by the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. Moreover, in comparison with the GA method, the proposed method is more effective in obtaining better optimization results and is much more efficient in terms of computation time.

A study of the shock wave turbulent boundary layer interaction is presented. The focus of the study is the interactions of the shock waves with the turbulent boundary layer on the falt plate. Three examples are investigated. The computations are performed, using mixed explicit-implicit generalized Galerkin finite element method. The linear equations at each time step are solved by a preconditioned GMRES algorithm. Numerical results indicate that the implicit scheme converges to the asymptotic steady state much faster than the explicit counterpart. The computed surface pressures and skin friction coefficients display good agreement with experimental data. The flowfield manifests a complex shock wave system and a pair of counter-rotating vortices.
