  • The dynamic behavior of graphite/epoxy laminated composite shell structure due to low-velocity impact is investigated using the finite element method. In this analysis, the Newmark's constant-acceleration time integration algorithm is used. The impact response such as contact force, central deflection and dynamic strain history form shell structure analysis are compared with those form the plate non-linear analysis. The effects of curvature, impact velocity and mass of impactor on the composite shell are discussed.

  • This paper deals with the applicability of extended layerwise optimization method (ELOM) for frequency optimization of laminated composite plates. The design objective is the maximization of the fundamental frequency of the laminated plates. The fibre orientations in the layers are considered as design variables. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for the finite element solution of the laminates. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to show the applicability of extended layerwise optimization algorithm of laminated plates for different parameters such as plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions.

  • This study suggested an optimized algorithm for detecting the loss of balance(LOB) in the seated position. And the sensitivity analysis was performed in order to identify the role of each design variable in the algorithm. The LOB algorithm consisted of data processing of measured signals, an internal model of the central nervous system and a control error anomaly(CEA) detector. This study optimized design variables of a CEA detector to obtain improved values of the success rate(SR) of detecting the LOB and the margin time(MT) provided for preventing the falling. Nine healthy adult volunteers were involved in the experiments. All the subjects were asked to balance their body in a predescribed seated posture with the rear legs of a four-legged wooden chair. The ground reaction force from the right leg was measured from the force plate while the accelerations of the chair and the head were measured from a couple of piezoelectric accelerometers. The measured data were processed to predict the LOB using a detection algorithm. Variables S2, h2 and hd are related to the detector: S2 represents a data selecting window, h2 a time shift and hd an operating period of the LOB detection algorithm. S2 was varied from 0.1 to 10 sec with an increment of 0.1 sec, and both h2 and hd were varied from 0.01 to 1.0 sec with an increment of 0.01 sec. It was found that the SR and MT were increased by up to 9.7% and 0.497 sec comparing with the previously published case when the values of S2, h2 and hd were set to 4.5, 0.3 and 0.2 sec, respectively. Also the results of sensitivity analysis showed that S2 and h2 had considerable influence on the SR while these variables were not so sensitive to the MT.

  • The authors has developed the transfer influence coefficient method(TICM) which is an algorithm for the analysis of vibration suitable for a personal computer and applied to many structures such as straight-line beam, plate and shell structures. But TICM can't be applied to the closed loop system and is required extremely much time on the computation of complicate and large structures. Therefore, we now suggest the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) overcoming these two problems, which consists on the concept of the substructure synthesis method and transfer influence coefficient method. TSCM is formulated for the free vibration analyses of a straight-line distributed beam structure and confirmed by the results of numerical computation to the numerical high accuracy and the high speed.

  • This study develops a system for effective prediction of residual stresses by the backpropagation algorithm using the neural network. To achieve this goal, a series of experiments were carried out to and measured the residual stresses using the sectional method. With the experimental results, the optional control algorithms using a neural network could be developed in order to reduce the effect of the external disturbances during GMA welding processes. Then the results obtained from this study were compared between the measured and calculated results, weld guality might be controlled by the neural network based on backpropagation algorithm.. This system can not only help to understand the interaction between the process parameters and residual stress, but also improve the quantity control for welded structures.

  • Active control of sound radiation from a vibrating rectangular plate by a steady-state harmonic point force disturbance is experimentally studied. Structural excitation is achieved by two piezoceramic actuators mounted on the panel. Two accelerometers are implemented as error sensors. Estimated radiated sound signals using vibro-acoustic path transfer function are used as error signals. The vibro-acoustic path transfer function represents system between accelerometers and microphones. The approach is based on a multi-channel filtered-x LMS algorithm. The results shows that attenuation of sound levels of 11dB, 10dB is achieved.

  • The prediction of fretting wear is a significant issue for the design of contacting mechanical components such as flexible couplings and splines, jointed structures and so on. In our earlier study, we developed a numerical model to predict the fretting wear using boundary element method. The developed algorithm needs experimental fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients between two moving materials to get more reliable results. In this study, therefore, we demonstrated the measurement method of the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients using disk on plate tribometer with piazo actuator and gap sensor. For four different material combinations, the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients are acquired through the fretting wear experiment and the analysis of the measured values. Thess results are useful to predict the quantative fretting wear rate in the developed algorithm.

  • In this paper a new multi-step damage detection approach is provided. In the first step, condensed modal residual vector based indicator (CMRVBI) has been proposed to locate the suspected damaged elements of structures that have rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs). The CMRVBI is a new indicator that uses only translational DOFs of the structures to localize damaged elements. In the next step, salp swarm algorithm is applied to quantify damage severity of the suspected damaged elements. In order to assess the performance of the proposed approach, a numerical example including a three-layer square laminated composite plate is studied. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed CMRVBI is effective for locating damage, regardless of the effect of noise. The efficiency of proposed approach is also compared during both steps. The results demonstrate that in noisy condition, the damage identification approach is capable for the studied structure.

  • Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) processes with inner contact were analyzed using a 3-D rigid visco-plastic finite element method. A constant-triangular element based on membrane approximation and an incremental theory of plasticity are employed for the formulation. The hierarchical search algorithm for the contact searching has been applied. The algorithms for contact force processing were designed to handle equally well contact between deformable bodies, as well as rigid bodies. The plate of three and four sheets for 3-D SPF/DB model are analyzed using the developed program. The validity for the analysis is verified by comparison between analysis, experiment and results in the literature.
