  • The truss based steel bridge structures usually consists of gusset plates which lose their load carrying capacity and rigidity under the effect of repeated and dynamics loads. This paper is focused on modeling the nonlinear material behavior of the gusset plates of the Truss Based Bridges subjected to dynamics loads. The nonlinear behavior of material is characterized by a damage coupled elsto-plastic material models. A truss bridge finite element model is established in Abaqus with the details of the gusset plates and their connections. The nonlinear finite element analyses are performed to calculate stress and strain states in the gusset plates under different loading conditions. The study indicates that damage initiation occurred in the plastic deformation localized region of the gusset plates where all, diagonal, horizontal and vertical, truss member met and are critical for shear type of failure due tension and compression interaction. These findings are agreed with the analytical and experimental results obtained for the stress distribution of this kind gusset plate.

  • The paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of prefabricated composite structural building reinforced concrete slabs with the insulating material for a residential building construction. The building slabs were composed of concrete and expanded polystyrene. In experiments, the slabs in the full-scale 1:1 were subjected to vertical concentrated loads and failed along a diagonal shear crack. The experiments were numerically evaluated using the finite element method based on two different constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an elasto-plastic model with the Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with the Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Second, a coupled elasto-plastic-damage formulation based on the strain equivalence hypothesis was used. In order to describe strain localization in concrete, both models were enhanced in the softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Attention was paid to the formation of critical diagonal shear crack which was a failure precursor.

  • In a performance-based design, the structural safety is estimated from pre- defined damage states and corresponding damage indices. Both damage states and damage indices are well defined for above-ground structures, but very limited studies have been performed on underground structures. In this study, we define the damage states and damage indices of a cut-and-cover box tunnel which is one of typical structures used in metro systems, under a seismic excitation from a series of inelastic frame analyses. Three damage states are defined in terms of the number of plastic hinges that develop within the structure. The damage index is defined as the ratio of the elastic moment to the yield moment. Through use of the proposed index, the inelastic behavior and failure mechanism of box tunnels can be simulated and predicted through elastic analysis. In addition, the damage indices are linked to free-field shear strains. Because the free-field shear strain can be easily calculated from a 1D site response analysis, the proposed method can be readily used in practice. Further studies are needed to determine the range of shear strains and associated uncertainties for various types of tunnels and site profiles. However, the inter-linked platform of damage state - damage index - shear wave velocity - shear strain provides a novel approach for estimating the inelastic response of tunnels, and can be widely used in practice for seismic designs.

  • The purpose of this study is the impact of the typhoon damage to housing and facilities in rural areas. House of damage, as well as the only including damage of facilities in rural areas, particularly greenhouse(Glass greenhouse, Plastic greenhouse, Vinyl greenhouse) leads to damage of crops the scale of the damage increases. In this study, focused on Jeollabuk-do area, accompanying him, the number of gale damage and evaluate the extent of the damage to the typhoon. And aims to provide basic data for the rural areas of strong winds and typhoons preparedness and facility design based on the results. Judging from the results of the analysis of natural disasters caused by typhoons and strong winds, the city formed mainly in the area than in the plains or coastal rural areas compared to other areas more damage can appear. In recent years, many design maximum wind speed of 40m/s wind over because disaster type, even if the standard installation, preferably determined through a precise structural analysis to ensure the structural history of acting urgently.

  • In both cosmetic and functional aspects, loss of digital pulp is a common problem. Compound or composite defects of the hand and fingers with exposed denuded tendon, bone, joint, or neurovascular structures may require flap coverage. Most often these lesions can be repaired by using simple local flap, neurovascular flap, thenar flap, and cross-finger flap. But microvascular reconstruction is sometimes needed for large defects. But Authors do not recommend these procedures in case of severe crushing injuries involving multiple finger pulp losses because they have possibility of damage of the vascular network and infection. So we applied distant flaps such as chest flaps, groin flaps, abdominal flaps and etc. And then we applied surgical rubber gloves for remodeling the flap after cutaneous healing. We have acquired satisfactory results, after the simple molding method for distant flap finger by using surgical rubber gloves treatment.

  • The paper presents quasi-static numerical simulations of the behaviour of short reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement under mixed shear-tension failure using the FEM and four various constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with a Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Next, an anisotropic smeared crack and isotropic damage model were applied. Finally, an elasto-plastic-damage model was used. To ensure mesh-independent FE results, to describe strain localization in concrete and to capture a deterministic size effect, all models were enhanced in a softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Bond-slip between concrete and reinforcement was considered. The numerical results were directly compared with the corresponding laboratory tests performed by Walraven and Lehwalter (1994). The advantages and disadvantages of enhanced models to model the reinforced concrete behaviour were outlined.

  • In this study, low-velocity impact damage (LVID) in glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) was investigated using pulse thermography (PT) and lock-in thermography (LIT) techniques. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the detection performance of each technique for LVID in GFRP. Unidirectional and cross-ply GFRPs were prepared with four energy levels using a drop weight impact machine and they were inspected from the impact side, which may be common in actual service conditions. When the impacted side was used for both inspection and thermal loading, results showed that the suggested techniques were able to identify the LVID which is barely visible to the naked eye. However, they also include limitations that depend on the GFRP thickness at the location of the delamination produced by the lowest impact energy of five joule.

  • An elastic-plastic-viscous constitutive model was proposed based on a simple formulation scheme. The anisotropic modified Cam-Clay model was extended for the general stress space for the plastic simulation. The generalized viscous theory was simplified and used for the viscous constitutive part. A damage law was incoporated into the proposed constitutive model. The mathematical formulation and development of the model were performed from the point of view that fewer parameters be better employed. The creep behaviors with or without creep rupture were predicted using the developed model for cohesive soils. The model predictions were favorably compared with the experimental results including the undrained creep rupture, which is an important observed phenomenon for cohesive soils. Despite the simplicity of the constitutive model, it performs well as long as the time to failure ratio of the creep rupture tests is within the same order of magnitude.

  • In this paper, utilizing the theory of ductile fracture a chevron crack in a 4-stage open cold extrusion process is predicted by the finite element methods and then compared with previous experiments. The normalized Cockcroft-Latham damage model is employed and the material is identified using a tensile test based material identification technique that gives fracture information as well as flow stress at large strain. A large difference between the predicted cracks and actual experiments is observed, specifically narrower width and greater maximum height of the crack. This reveals the limitation of this approach based on the conventional theory of ductile fracture. Based on the observations and the related criticisms, a new approach for predicting the chevron crack is proposed, suggesting that either the critical damage should not be a fixed material constant, or that the conventional fracture theory should be considered with the effects of embrittlement due to accumulated plastic deformation while the duration of crack generation and plastic deformation should be reduced.

  • Rock salt is a near-perfect material for gas storage repositories due to its excellent ductility and low permeability. Gas storage in rock salt layers during gas injection and gas production causes the stress redistribution surrounding the cavity. The triaxial cyclic loading and unloading tests for rock salt were performed in this paper. The elastic-plastic deformation behaviour of rock salt under cyclic loading was observed. Rock salt experienced strain hardening during the initial loading, and the irreversible deformation was large under low stress station, meanwhile the residual stress became larger along with the increase of deviatoric stress. Confining pressure had a significant effect on the unloading modulus for the variation of mechanical parameters. Based on the theory of elastic-plastic damage mechanics, the evolution of damage during cyclic loading and unloading under various confining pressure was described.
