For the safe seismic design of buildings, it is necessary to predict the plastic deformation demands of the members as well as the story drift ratio. In the present study, a simple method of estimating the beam plastic rotation was developed for special-moment-resisting steel frame structures designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The proposed method uses elastic analysis rather than nonlinear analysis, which is difficult to use in practice. The beam plastic rotation was directly calculated based on the results of the elastic analysis, addressing the moment redistribution, the column and joint dimensions, the movement of the plastic hinge, the panel zone deformation, the gravity load, and the strain-hardening behavior. In addition, the rocking effect of the braced frame or core wall on the beam plastic rotation was addressed. For verification, the proposed method was applied to a six-story special-moment frame designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The predicted plastic rotations of the beams were compared with those that were determined via nonlinear analysis. The beam plastic rotations that were predicted using the proposed method correlated well with those that were determined from the nonlinear pushover analysis.

The paper presents preliminary investigation results for the effect of the baseline correction in the acceleration excitation method on finite element seismic analysis results (such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain considering cyclic plasticity, von Mises effective stress, etc) of nuclear safety Class I components. For investigation, finite element elastic-plastic time-history seismic analysis is performed for a surge line including a pressurizer lower head, a pressurizer surge nozzle, a surge piping, and a hot leg surge nozzle using the Chaboche hardening model. Analysis is performed for various seismic loading methods such as acceleration excitation methods with and without the baseline correction, and a displacement excitation method. Comparing finite element analysis results, the effect of the baseline correction is investigated. As a result of the investigation, it is identified that finite element analysis results using the three methods do not show significant difference.

SGBEM(Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method)-FEM alternating method has been proposed by Nikishkov, Park and Atluri. In the proposed method, arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional crack problems can be solved by alternating between the crack solution in an infinite body and the finite element solution without a crack. In the previous study, the SGBEM-FEM alternating method was extended further in order to solve elastic-plastic crack problems and to obtain elastic-plastic stress fields. For the elastic-plastic analysis the algorithm developed by Nikishkov et al. is used after modification. In the algorithm, the initial stress method is used to obtain elastic-plastic stress and strain fields. In this paper, elastic-plastic J integrals for three-dimensional cracks are obtained using the method. For that purpose, accurate values of displacement gradients and stresses are necessary on an integration path. In order to improve the accuracy of stress near crack surfaces, coordinate transformation and partitioning of integration domain are used. The coordinate transformation produces a transformation Jacobian, which cancels the singularity of the integrand. Using the developed program, simple three-dimensional crack problems are solved and elastic and elastic-plastic J integrals are obtained. The obtained J integrals are compared with the values obtained using a handbook solution. It is noted that J integrals obtained from the alternating method are close to the values from the handbook.
This paper presents practical notional-load plastic-hinge method for a two-dimensional steel structure design. The proposed method incorporates the refined plastic-hinge concept for spread of plasticity together with a practical notional-load approach. The proposed method can assess realistically both strength and behavior of a structural system and its individual members in a direct manner. As a result, the method can be used for design without tedious separate member capacity checks, including the calculation of K-factor. The strengths predicted by the proposed method are then compared with those predicted by the exact plastic-zone analysis as well as by the conventional LRFD procedure. A good agreement is generally observed. The displacement predictions are compared with the plastic-zone solutions. Analysis and design guidelines in using the proporsed method are given in detail. Analysis and design procedures are recommended. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those determined by the LRFD method. It is concluded that the procedures are suitable for adoption in practice.

To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.

This paper introduces a simplified method to consider forming effects in a car crash analysis. Representative value was used to consider forming effects simply. Four representative values, which are the mean value of thicknesses and effective plastic strains at nodes, the median of thicknesses and effective plastic strains at nodes, were evaluated. A crash analysis of a front side member shows that analysis results from the suggested methods are similar to those from the conventional method to consider forming effects. Use of the mean effective plastic strain shows the best results. A car crash analysis for a ULSAB/AVC model under the condition of US SINCAP were carried out to demonstrate the validity of the suggested method. Analysis results show that the error of suggested method is less than 1.5%.

For safe seismic evaluation and design, it is necessary to predict the plastic deformation demands of members. In the present study, a quick and reasonable method for the evaluation of member plastic deformations of dual systems was developed on the basis of results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. Plastic deformations of beams, columns, and walls are functions of member stiffness, story drift ratio, and moment redistribution determined from elastic analysis. For dual systems with rigid connections between walls and beams, an increase in the plastic deformations of beams due to the rocking effect was considered. The proposed method was applied to 8-story dual systems and the predicted plastic deformations were compared with the results of nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method accurately predicted the member plastic deformations with simple calculations, but that for the accurate evaluation of member plastic deformations, the inelastic story drift ratio must also be predicted with accuracy. The proposed method can be applied to both the performance-based seismic design of new structures and the seismic evaluation of existing structures.

The dimensional accuracy of a final product is mainly affected by elastic die deformation during the forging and elastic recovery after the ejection in cold forging process. The investigations on elastic recovery are not so much as those of elastic die deformation. The elastic recovery can be determined by using the elastic-plalstic finite element analysis, but, this method has some limits such as poor conver- gence and long computational time, etc. In this paper, a theoretical analysis for predicting the elastic recovery of a final product in axi-symmetric forging process by using the rigid-plastic finite element method is presented. The rigid-plastic finite element analysis of a cold forward extrusion process involving loading, ejecting process is accomplished by rigid-plastic FE code, DEFORM. The effect of elastic die deformation on the final product dimenmsion is also considered. The calculated elastic recovery is compared is compared with the analysis result of elastic-plastic FE code. A plastic analysis method is commonly used in ship and offshore structural system to utilize the ultimate strength. In this paper, the basic principle of plastic analysis method is applied to ship grillages such as transverse oil-tight bulkheads. The main emphasis is placed on the optimum arrangement of grillage system to give minimum weight. Additional parametric study is carried out to find the effect of various arrangement of grillage system. The above methods are applied to oil-tight bulkhead design, and results are compared with the existing one.

Analysis of supported excavation system by Elasto-Plastic Isoparametric Finite Element Method and Elasto-Plastic Beam Method have been conducted for the simulation of stepwise underground excavation. Conventional methods, fixed Supported Beam and Spring Supported Beam method, also have been examined and compared with the results of elasto-plastic beam method and field data. Except unavoidable result of upward ground settlement near the top of retaining wall and relatively high bending moment of wall at each excavation level, satisfactory results have been derived using elasto-plastic isopara metric finite element method. The results from elasto-plastic beam analysis program, developed by the author, are proved to be fit field data in acceptable variance as shown in the paper. Displacement and bending moment, of the wall by conventional methods, both fixed supported beam and spring supported beam, are always underestimated than field data, and attention must be given that the diffence increases with deeper excavation depth and lower horizontal subgrade reaction of the ground.
