  • The main components, such as a reactor vessel, in commercial nuclear power plants have been welded to pipes with dissimilar metal in which Primary Water Corrosion Cracking (PWSCC) has been occurred. PWSCC has become a worldwide issue recently. This paper addresses the results of experimental and numerical analysis to prevent PWSCC by changing the stress profile that is tensile stress to compressive stress at interesting regions with plastic deformation generated by mechanical pressure. Based on the results of experimental and numerical analysis with a 6 inch pipe and dissimilar metal welded pipes, compressive stress 68~206 Mpa is generated at all locations of inner surface in the heat affected zone.

  • Experimental studies were peformed to investigate variations in ductility of shear wall with length of boundary confinement. Eight specimens containg different lengths of confinment zone, which model compressive zone in plastic regions of shear walls, were tested against eccentric vetical load. Stress-strain model for confined concrete was used to predict strength and ductility of the specimens, which was compared to the test results. The results obtained show that failure of the compressive zone occurs in a brittle manner when the stress of unconfined zone softened after the ultimate strength were reached. To enhance the ductility of shear walls with concentrated confinement zone such as barbell-type walls, the ultimate strength of the confinement zone needs to be increased, and for shear walls with distributed confinement zone the length of the confinement zone needs to be extended.

  • Aluminum/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the delamination zone behavior of Al/AFRP with a saw-cut and circular hole using average stress criterion and the effect of notch geometry. Mechanical tests were carried out to determine the cyclic-bending moment and delamination zone observed ultrasonic C-scan pictures. In case of Al/AFRP containing saw-cut specimen, the shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack. However, in case of Al/AFRP containing circular hole specimen, the shape and size of delamination zone formed two types. first type, delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack. Second type, not observed fatigue crack. Therefore, delamination zone was formed dependently of the circular hole shape.

  • This study was performed to investigate the behaviour of root zone environments under the control of soil temperature and tension of soil moisture near the root Bone of 'Kyoho' grapes tree grown on restricted root zone system in plastic greenhouse. Maximum diurnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse ranged between 25.1 and 32.7$^{\circ}C$, and the average of nocturnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse maintained at 18$^{\circ}C$ in winter season. Also the minimum diurnal relative humidity ranged between 50 and 55%, and the maximum nocturnal relative humidity ranged between 84 to 87%. At a depth of 15cm from soil surface, the average soil temperature maintained at 25.6$^{\circ}C$ for under-ground heating, and appeared to 17.4$^{\circ}C$ for unheated condition. Although the tension of soil moisture just after irrigation sharply decreased to pF 1.5, the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm maintained at pF 2.0~2.2. It is suggested that the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm might be used as the standard for the determination of irrigation set point. Effective drainage system is needed to prevent the spindly and succulent growth of vine trees grown in restricted root zone system.

  • This paper presents the results of an analysis of the excess porewater pressure distribution due to piezocone penetration in overconsolidated clays. From piezocone test results for moderately and heavily overconsolidated clays, it was observed that the excess porewater pressure increases monotonically from the piezocone surface to the outer boundary of the shear zone and then decreases logarithmically to the outer boundary of the plastic zone. It was also found that the size of the shear zone decreases from approximately 2.2 to 1.5 times the cone radius with increasing OCR, while the plastic radius is about 11 times the piezocone radius, regardless of the OCR. The equation developed in this study based on the modified Cam clay model and the cylindrical cavity expansion theory, which take into consideration the effects of the strain rate and stress anisotropy, provide a good prediction of the initial porewater pressure at the piezocone location. The method of predicting the spatial distribution of excess porewater pressure proposed in this study is based on a linearly increasing ${\Delta}u_{shear}$. In the shear zone and a logarithmically decreasing ${\Delta}u_{oct}$, and is verified by comparing with the excess porewater pressure measured in overconsolidated specimens at the calibration chamber.

  • In a primary reactor cooling system(RCS), a dissimilar weld zone exists between cast stainless steel(CF8M) in a pipe and low-alloy steel(SA508 cl.3) in a nozzle. Thermal aging is observed in CF8M as the RCS is exposed for a long period of time to a reactor operating temperature between 290 and $330^{\circ}C$, while no effect is observed in SA508 cl.3. The specimens are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique maintained for 300, 1800 and 3600 hrs at $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The specimens for elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests are prepared one type, which notch is created in the heat affected zone(HAZ) of CF8M. And, the specimens for fatigue crack growth tests are prepared in three classes, which notches are created at the center of deposited zone, the HAZ of CF8M, and the HAZ of SA508 cl.3. From the experiments, the J-integral values with the increase of aging time decrease, and the differences of the fatigue crack growth behaviors are relatively small in the three classes specimens.

  • Impact toughness and fracture behavior were studied in five kinds of non-heat treating steels containing bainite; standard(0.25C-1.5Mn-0.5Cr-0.2Mo-0.15V), high V(0.3V), Ni(0.5Mn-2Ni), W(0.4W instead of Mo), and high C-Ni(0.35C-0.5Mn-2Ni) steels. The good hardness and impact toughness balance was exhibited in the $1100^{\circ}C$-rolled condition, while the impact toughness was deteriorated due to coarse grained microstructure in the $1200^{\circ}C$-rolled condition. The impact toughness decreased with increasing the hardness in all steels studied. The fracture behavior was also basically identical, that is, the fracture area was divided into 3 zones; shear and fibrous zone, fracture transition zone with ductile dimples and cleavage cracks, where the cracks initiate and grow to critical size, unstable cleavage fracture propagation zone. The energy absorbed for the critical crack formation through the plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in front of the notch root contributed to a mostly significant portion of the total impact energy.

  • A finite element analysis has been performed to investigate the effect of die clearance on shear planes in the fine blanking of a part of automobile safety belt. For the analysis, S45C is selected as an material, which is used in manufacturing the part of automobile safety belt, and Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion is applied. Effect of die Clearance on die-roll width, die-roll depth, burnish zone, and fracture zone has been investigated in the finite element analysis by a rigid-plastic FEM code, DEFORM-2D. From the analysis, it has been found that die-roll depth and depth of the shear plane increase with increasing die clearance. And the burnish zone decreases with increasing die clearance, but the variation of fracture zone is opposite to that of burnish zone because the increase in die clearance requires less fracture energy. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results. There is a good agreement between theory and experiment.

  • An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to show how to eliminate the noises and to obtain the data related with the relationship between AE signal characteristics and mechanical behaviors for the pressure vessel steel. Various kinds of noises are introduced into the AE data in the course of experiments. Accordingly, real AE data have to be obtained after tests. AE test was carried out under four point bending load. Among AE signals, counts and signal strength are used to find out the differences of AE characteristics between the basemetal and weldment. After tests, this paper shows the procedures of filtering the noises against basemetal of the pressure vessel steel to obtain the real data around crack tip. Relationships between plastic zone size and cumulative AE counts are shown also. AE signals were absent within an elastic region, regardless of the specimens. Most of AE signals are produced in the process of plastic deformation. The deformation and fracture modes of basemetal and weldment are quiet different.
