TiC ceramic particulate-reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated and the resultant densification, microstructure, and static and dynamic mechanical properties were studied. Comparing Ti with TiH₂powders as host materials for TiC ceramic reinforcement by pressureless vacuum sintering, TiH₂-started composites showed better sinterability and resistance to both elastic and plastic deformation than Ti-started ones. When TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were hot pressed, TiH₂matrices transformed to alpha prime Ti and alpha Ti phase, respectively. It is interpreted that the diffusion of an alpha stabilizer carbon from TiC into the matrix is one of the plausible reasons far such a microstructural difference. The 0.2% offset yield strengths of the hot pressed TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were 1008 and 1446 MPa, respectively, in a static compressive mode (strain rate of 1×$10^{-3}$/s). Dynamic compressive strengths of the samples were 1600 and 2060 MPa, respectively, at a strain rate of 4×10³/s.
When subjected to severe shear deformation by ECAP, microstructure of Al2024 becomes nanocrystalline grained texture material. To measure the strength of that, small punch (SP) testing method was adopted as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial tensile testing because the size of material processed by ECAP were limited to $\varphi12mm$ in transverse direction. SP tests were performed with specimens in longitudinal and transverse directions of Al 2024 ECAP metal. For comparing the strength values with those assessed by SP tests, uniaxial tensile tests were also conducted with specimens in longitudinal direction. Failure surfaces of the tested SP specimens showed that failure mode was shear deformation and Al 2024 ECAP metal has an anisotropy in strength. Thus, conventional equations proposed for assessing the strength characteristics were improper to assess those of Al2024 ECAP metal. In this paper a way of assessing the strength of Al 2024 ECAP metal was proposed and was proven to be effective.
This paper presents a new small-sized damper featuring magneto-rheological (MR) fluid which can be applied to vibration control system. The proposed MR damper consists of cylinder, piston, a couple of bearings, oil-seals and magnetic circuit which has two coils. In this damper, approximately 5cc of MR fluid is used. The damping force of the MR damper is designed to be followed by linear shear-mode Bingham-plastic model. In order to verify the performance of the MR damper, an experimental apparatus is established. In the experimental test, the damping force of the MR damper is measured with respect to time, displacement and velocity. In addition, the time response of MR damper is measured when 1A of step current is applied. Finally, The proposed small MR damper is applied to vibration control. In this process, a simple 1-DOF system is modeled and controlled using PID controller.

Aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axial loading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than those of aluminum member. In this study, for complement of detects and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum CFRP members which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular members. Based on the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP members, crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum CRRP members which have different CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness Test results showed that aluminum CFRP members supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP members due to ductile nature of inner aluminum members. It turned out that the CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness influence energy absorption capability together with the collapse mode of the members.
Unlike MS(Magnetic Stripe), SMART CARD is equipped with COS(Chip Operating System) consisting of the Microprocessor and Memory where information can be stored and processed, and there are two types of cards according to the contact mode; the contact type that passes through a gold plated area and the contactless one that goes through the radio-frequency using an antenna embedded in the plastic card. the contactless IC card used for the transportation card was first introduced into local area buses in Seoul, and expanded throughout the country so that it has removed the inconvenience such as possession of cash, fare payment and collection. Focusing on the Seoul metropolitan area in 2004, prepaid and pay later cards were adopted and have been used interchangeably between a bus and subway. The card terminal compatible between a bus and subway is Proximity Integrated Circuit Card(PICC) as international standards(1443 Type A,B), communicates in the 13.56MHz dynamic frequency modulation-demodulation system, and adopts the Multi Secure Application Module(SAM). In the second half of 2009, the system avaliable nationwide will be built when the payment SAM standard is implemented.
During fabrication of deck house block in passenger ships, the problem of unexpected large deformation and distortion frequently occurs. In this case, line and spot heating method were widely used to correct the distortion of thin plate structure. Spot heating was especially used for the case under 5mm thickness. Few papers are available on the working conditions of spot heating method but only little information on deformation control. In this study, evaluation was carried out on the temperature distribution of spot heating methods using FEA and practical experiments for various heating time. IIn FEA, heat input model was established using Tsuji's double Gaussian heat input mode (Tsuji, I., 1988). This model was verified by comparing with experimental data. Also radial shrinkage and angular distortion due to spot heating were determined and compared with experimental results. Thermo elasto-plastic analysis was performed using commercial FE code, MSC/MARC. Radial shrinkage and angular distortion were measured using 3D measuring apparatus. Based on these results, simplified analysis model for deformation by spot heating was established.
Ni coated $Al_2O_3$ composite was successfully Prepared by the electroless deposition Process. The average size of Ni particles coated on the $Al_2O_3$ matrix powder was about 20 nm. It was hard to find any reaction compound as an impurity at interface between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni particles after sintering. The characterization of microstructure crystal structure and fracture behavior of the sintered body were investigated using XRD, TEM and Victors hardness tester, and compared with those of the sintered $Al_2O_3$ monolithic body. Many dislocations were observed in the Ni phase due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni phase, and no observed microcracks at their $Al_2O_3$ and Ni interface. In the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite, the main fracture mode showed a mixed fracture with intergranular and transgranuluar type having some ,surface roughness. The fracture toughness was slightly increased due to the plastic deformation mechanism of Ni phase in the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite.
The first part of this study dealt with the determination of soil parameters for Lade's double work-hardening model using the raw data obtained from cubical and cylinderal triaxial tests At present, it should be investigated which test can simulated satisfactorily the behavior of soft clayey foundation. In this regard, plate bearing test on the 2-dimentional model foundation(218cm long, 40cm wide, 19&m high) was performed, and finite element analysis carried out to abtain the behavior of the foundation. Settlement, lateral displacement, displacement vector and mode of failure were measured and these values were compared with numerical values in order to validate the numerical program developed by authors. The FEM technique was based on Christain-Boehmer's method, in which the displacement is obtained at each nodal point while stress and pore water pressure at each element. In this research, Biot's equation, which explains was elahorately the phisical meaning of consolidation, was selected, as a governing equation, coupled with Lade's double surface work-hardening constitutive model.
Using a spatial compound imaging technique in a medical ultrasound imaging system, the average speed of sound in a medium of interest is measured, and imaging of its distribution is implemented. When the brightness reaches the highest level in an ultrasonic image obtained as the speed of sound used in focusing is varied, it turns out that the focusing has been accomplished satisfactorily and that the speed of sound which has been adopted becomes the sought-after average speed of sound. Because spatial compound imaging provides many different views of the same object, the adverse effect of erroneous speed-of-sound estimation tends to be more severe in compound imaging than in plain B-mode imaging. Thus, in compound imaging, the average speed of sound even in the case of speckled images can be accurately estimated by observing the brightness change due to different speeds of sound employed. Using this new method that offers spatial diversity, we can construct an image of the speed of sound distribution in a phantom embedded with a 10-mm diameter plastic cylinder whose speed of sound is different from that of the background. The speed of sound in the cylinder is found to be different from that of the surrounding medium.
