  • Concrete are the most widely used manmade materials for infrastructure construction across the world. These constructions gradually aged and damaged due to long-term use. However, there does not exist an efficient concrete recycling method with low energy consumption. In this study, concrete was regarded as a heterogeneous material composed of coarse aggregate and cement mortar. And the failure mode of concrete under ultrasonic dynamic loading was investigated by finite element (FE) analysis. Simultaneously, a 3D random aggregate concrete model was programmed by APDL and imported into ABAQUS software, and the damage plastic constitutive model was applied to each phase to study the damage law of concrete under dynamic loading. Meanwhile, the dynamic damage process of concrete was numerically simulated, which observed ultrasonic propagating and the concrete crushing behavior. Finally, the FE simulation considering the influence of different aggregate volume and aggregate size was carried out to illustrate the damage level of concrete.

  • The nonlinear analysis was perforned for a 2-bay 2-story moment-resisting reinforced concrete plane frame with seismic detail using KDARC 2D program. The analytical models consist of the material model, the member model, the hysteretic model, and the damage model etc. The conclusion based on the results of analysis is as following. : (1) Story shear-displacement relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis result was different from the experiment result. (2) Plastic hinges were found to occur mainly in beams at first story while all the columns had plastic hinges throughout the structure. (3) Failure mode is a little different from experiment result in the yielding mechanism. (4) Damage index isabout 0.25. This means that the degree of damage is moderate and can be repairable.

  • Detection of damages in fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composite structures is important from the safety and serviceability point of view. Usually, damage is realized as a local reduction of stiffness and if dynamic responses of the structure are sensitive enough to such changes in stiffness, then a well posed inverse problem can provide an efficient solution to the damage detection problem. Usually, such inverse problems are solved within the framework of pattern recognition. Support Vector Machine (SVM) Algorithm is one such methodology, which minimizes the weighted differences between the experimentally observed dynamic responses and those computed using the finite element model- by optimizing appropriately chosen parameters, such as stiffness. A damage detection strategy is hereby proposed using SVM which perform stepwise by first locating and then determining the severity of the damage. The SVM algorithm uses simulations of only a limited number of damage scenarios and trains the algorithm in such a way so as to detect damages at unknown locations by recognizing the pattern of changes in dynamic responses. A rectangular fiber reinforced plastic composite plate has been investigated both numerically and experimentally to observe the efficiency of the SVM algorithm for damage detection. Experimentally determined modal responses, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are used as observable parameters. The results are encouraging since a high percentage of damage cases have been successfully determined using the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, the sensitivity of a plastic-damage-based structural damage index on mesh density is studied. Multiple finite element meshes with increasing density are used to investigate their effect on the damage index values calculated from nonlinear finite element simulations for a reinforced concrete column subjected to cyclic loading. With the simulation results, this paper suggests a correction method for the objective damage index based on nonlinear regression of volumetric tensile damage ratio data. The modified damage index values are presented in the quasi-static cyclic simulation to show the efficacy of the suggested correction method.

  • Strip drawing of strain-hardening, viscoplastic materials with damage is analyzed by a rigid plastic finite element method. A process model is formulated using two state variables, one for strain hardening from slip dominated plastic distortion and the other for damage from growth of microvoids. Application of the model to aluminum strip drawing is given via implementation in a consistent penalty finite element formulation. The predicted density changes as a result of void growth are compared to those from experiments reported in the literature. The effects of drawing conditions such as drawing speed and die angle on the mechanical property chages are studied.

  • The rescue methods for the marine casualties are limited due to the characteristics of operation environment of the vessel. Especially the most of marine accidents have been occurred at the bow structure of ship. Moreover the failure of bow structure may lead to catastrophic mishaps. In this paper, the extents of damage of a bow structure fracture subject to collision accident was investigated by using numerical method. The computer simulation approach by using Finite Element Method was employed to accomplish this goal. A finite element model, a 3D model of ship, has been utilized to evaluate damage of bow structure according to collision scenario. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that the plastic deformation occurred at the bow structure. Also it was shown that the collision angle clearly plays a role in determining amount of damage of ship structures.

  • Carbon-manganese steel A42 (French standards) is used in steam generator pipes of nuclear center and subject to low cycle fatigue (LCF) loads. In order to obtain the material LCF behavior, the tests are implemented in a hydraulic fatigue machine. The LCF plastic deformation and cyclic stress in macroscope have been influenced by the accumulated low cycle fatigue damage. The constitutive kinematic and isotropic hardening modeling is modified with coupling fatigue damage to describe the fatigue behavior. The improved model seems to be good agreement with the test results.

  • This paper proposes a numerically-based methodology to implicitly model irreversible deformations in concrete through a damage model. Plasticity theory is not explicitly employed, although resemblances are still present. A scalar isotropic damage model is adopted and the damage variable is split in two: one contributing for stiffness degradation (cracking) and other contributing for irreversible deformations (plasticity). The proposed methodology is thermodynamically consistent as it consists in a damage model rewritten in different terms. Its Finite Element coding is presented, indicating that minor changes are necessary. It is also demonstrated that nonlinear algorithms are unnecessary to model concrete cracking and plasticity. Experimental data from direct tension and four-point bending tests under cyclic loading are compared to the proposed methodology. A numerical case study of a low-cycle fatigue is also presented. It can be concluded that the model is simple, feasible and capable to capture the essentials concerning cracking and plasticity.

  • Seismic safety is considered to be one of the key design objectives of AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP) in strong earthquakes. Dynamic behavior, damage development and aggravation effect are studied in this study for the three main components of AP1000 NPP, namely reinforced concrete shield building (RCSB), steel vessel containment (SVC) and reinforced concrete auxiliary building (RCAB). Characteristics including nonlinear concrete tension and compressive constitutions with plastic damage are employed to establish the numerical model, which is further validated by existing studies. The author investigates three earthquakes and eight input levels with the maximum magnitude of 2.4 g and the results show that the concrete material of both RCSB and RCAB have suffered serious damage in intense earthquakes. Considering RCAB in the whole NPP, significant damage aggravation effect can be detected, which is mainly concentrated at the upper intersection between RCSB and RCAB. SVC and reinforcing bar demonstrate excellent seismic performance with no obvious damage.
