This paper concerns the development and implementation of an orthotropic, stress resultant elasto-plastic finite element model for the collapse load analysis of reinforced concrete plates. The model implements yield line plasticity theory for reinforced concrete. The behaviour of the yield functions are studied, and modifications introduced to ensure a robust finite element model of cases involving bending and twisting stress resultants ($M_x$, $M_y$, $M_{xy}$). Onset of plasticity is always governed by the general yield-line-model (YLM), but in some cases a switch to the stress resultant form of the von Mises function is used to ensure the proper evolution of plastic strains. Case studies are presented, involving isotropic and orthotropic plates, to assess the behaviour of the yield line approach. The YLM function is shown to perform extremely well, in predicting both the collapse loads and failure mechanisms.
To gain more knowledge of aluminum foam sandwich structure and promote the engineering application, aluminum foam sandwich consisting of 7050 matrix aluminum foam core and 304 stainless steel face-sheets was studied under three-point bending by WDW-T100 electronic universal tensile testing machine in this work. Results showed that when aluminum foam core was reinforced by 304 steel face-sheets, its load carrying capacity improved dramatically. The maximum load of AFS in three-point bending increased with the foam core density or face-sheet thickness monotonically. And also when foam core was reinforced by 304 steel panels, the energy absorption ability of foam came into play effectively. There was a clear plastic platform in the load-displacement curve of AFS in three-point bending. No crack of 304 steel happened in the present tests. Two collapse modes appeared, mode A comprised plastic hinge formation at the mid-span of the sandwich beam, with shear yielding of the core. Mode B consisted of plastic hinge formation both at mid-span and at the outer supports.

Progressive collapse is a chain reaction of failures propagating throughout a portion of a structure that is disproportionate to the original local failure. When column members are subjected to unexpected load (compression load), they will buckle if the applied load is greater than the critical load that induces buckling. The post-buckling strength of the columns will decrease rapidly, but if there is enough residual strength, the members will absorb the potential energy generated by the impact load to prevent progressive collapse. Thus, it is necessary to identify the relationship of the load-deformation of a column member in the progressive collapse of a structure up to final collapse. In this study, we carried out nonlinear FEM analysis and based on deflection theory, we investigated the load-deformation relationship of H-section steel columns when both ends were fixed.

Accurate load-carrying capacities and moment distributions of thin circular plates are obtained for clamped or simply-supported boundary condition under various concentrated circular loadings. The material is regarded as perfectly-plastic based on an arbitrary yield function such as the Tresca yield function, the Johansen yield function, and the farmily of .betha.-norms which possesses the von Mises yield function and the Frobenius norm. To obtain the lower bound solutions, a maximization formulation is derived and implemented for efficient numerical calculation with a finite difference method and the modified Newton's method. The numerical results demonstrate plastic collapse behavior of circular plates and provide their design criteria.
As a lateral load resisting component, buckling restrained steel plate shear walls (BRW) have excellent energy dissipating capacity. Similar to thin steel plate shear walls, the mechanical behavior of BRWs depends on the boundary elements (adjacent beams and columns) which need adequate strength and stiffness to ensure the complete yielding of BRWs and the emergence of expected plastic collapse mechanism of frame. This paper presents a theoretical approach to estimate the design forces for boundary elements of beam-connected BRW (i.e., The BRW is only connected to beams at its top and bottom, without connections to columns) using a fundamental plastic collapse mechanism of frame, a force transferring model of beam-connected BRW and linear beam and column analysis. Furthermore, the design method of boundary beams and columns is presented. The proposed approach does not involve nonlinear analyses, which can be easily and efficiently used to estimate the design forces of beams and columns in a frame with BRWs. The predicted design forces of boundary elements are compared with those from nonlinear finite element analyses, and a good agreement is achieved.
Ship structures are basically an assembly of plate elements and estimation load-carrying capacity or the ultimate strength is one of the most important criterion for estimated safety assessment and rational design on the ship structure. Also, Structural elements making up ship plated structures do not work separately against external load. One of the critical collapse events of a ship structure is the occurrence of overall buckling and plastic collapse of deck or bottom structure subjected to longitudinal bending. So, the deck and the bottom plates are reinforced by a number af longitudinal stiffeners to increase their strength and load-carrying capacity. For a rational design avoiding such a sudden collapse, it is very important to know the buckling and plastic behaviour or collapse pattern of the stiffened plate under axial compression. In this present study, to investigate effect af modeling range, the finite element method are used and their results are compared varying the analysis ranges. When making the FEA model, six types of structural modeling are adopted varying the cross section of stiffener. In the present paper, a series of FEM elastoplastic large deflection analyses is performed on a stiffened plate with fiat-bar, angle-bar and tee-bar stiffeners. When the applied axial loading, the influences of cross-sectional geometries on collapse behaviour are discussed. The purpose of the present study is examined to numerically calculate the characteristics of buckling and ultimate strength behavior according to the analysis method of ship's stiffened plate subject to axial loading.

The fixed ends beam is analyzed by the s d 0 f system with the rigid-plastic model. And the safety criteria of the fixed ends beam to the Impulsive loads are established with the peak-load ratio to the static collapse load and impulse ratio to the ideal impulse producing the critical displacement. It is shown that the impulse and the peak-load of the impulsive loads are the important factors for the damage of the structures. It is also shown that the damage curves with the peak-load and impulse ratio are useful method to estimate the damage of the structures due to the emphasis on the equivalent dynamic loads rather than the equivalent static loads in the process of deriving the curve.

Metallic sandwich plates with various inner cores have important new features with not only ultra-light material characteristics and load bearing function but also multifunctional characteristics. Because of production possibility on the large scale and a good geometric precision, sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure from a single material have advantages as compared with other solid sandwich plates. Inner dimpled shell structures can be fabricated with press or roll forming process, and then bonded with two face sheets by multi-point resistance welding or adhesive bonding. Elasto-plastic bending behavior of sandwich plates have been predicted analytically and measured. The measurements have shown that elastic perfectly plastic approximation can be conveniently employed with less than 10% error in elastic stiffness, collapse load, and energy absorption. The dominant collapse modes are face buckling and bonding failure after yielding. Sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can absorb more energy than other types of sandwich plates during the bending behavior.
Simple and efficient way of nonlinear analysis considering elasto-plastic large deformation is introduced to calculate the strength of ring-stiffened cylinears subject to combined load of axial compression and lateral pressure. Parametric study gives various collapse modes according to the combination ratio of axial compression and lateral pressure, interaction between axial compression and lateral pressure and imperfection sensitivity of ultimate strength.
