  • The size, morphology and distribution of pores which affect on the physical properties of thermal barrier coatings were investigated to find the relationship with spraying parameters. The plasma-sprayed zirconia coatings contained numerous micropores as well as macropores which were appeared as spherical and irregular pores, and cracks. The pore formation process and its characteristics were varied with spraying distance. Porosity itself was varied with spraying parameters such as spray gun current, gas flow rate and the gas used(Ar or $N_2). The Porosity of coatings was ranged from 10 to 18% with the variation of spraying conditions. The relative hardness measured by the scratch test, showed strong dependence on the porosity of coatings rather than spraying parameters.

  • The plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical and wear properties of the plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coating on steel plate were examined in this study. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types, the one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occured at the interface of top coating and bond coating. It is though that the compressive residual stress increases with the increase of the top coating thickness. From the wear test, it was found that the wear rate increased with the increase of the sliding velocity regardless of the temperature. It is thought that the fracture toughness reduces with the increase of the sliding velocity at $30^{\circ}C$ and that the adhesion amount increases with the increase of the sliding velocity at $400^{\circ}C$ It is concluded that the wear mechanism at $30^{\circ}C$ is the fracture and pull-out of the carbide particles due to the fatigue on sliding surface, while the wear mechanism at $400^{\circ}C$ is the adhesion of the smeared layer formed during wear process.

  • Porosity is one important characteristic feature and structural index of sprayed coatings. A method of measurement of porosity, EPMA-EDS image processing is developed in the paper. The characteristics of pores can be determined by processing of the image obtained from an electron microscope via VISTA, Not only the porosity can be presented but also the statistical result of pore size distribution. Finally it can be drawn from this paper that EPMA-EDS is a quite effective method to completely characterize the pores in plasma sprayed coatings.

  • $Al_2O_3$coatings on mild steel substrate by plasma spray process were produced to evaluate microstructural characterization and mechanical properties. As-coated $Al_2O_3$coating samplessd were subjected to two heat treat-ment conditions : ⅰ) annealing under vacuum circumstance, ⅱ) hot press treated condition. The two heat treat-ed coatings were investigated in terms of microhardness, adhesion strength, wear resistance, porosity forma-tion, and microstructures. In the case of the coatings which were subject to preparation step ⅰ, the porosity in the coating was decreased with the increase of temperature ($700^{\circ}C$-$1100^{\circ}C$), and the wear resistance, microhardnesss and adhesion strength were increased with the increase of temperature. On the other hand, in the case of the coatings which were subject to preparation step ⅱ, wear resistance and adhesion strength were improved with the increase of temperature and pressure. Experimental measurements of coatings which were produced by both preparation conditions were enhanced compare to those of as-coated coatings.

  • Electrical behaviors of plasma-sprayed $Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ coatings have been investigated in terms of their $TiO_2$ content. On increasing the $TiO_2$ content from 6 to 30 wt%, the DC electrical conductivity increased by several orders of magnitude. From impedance spectroscopy analysis, the total conductivity of the grains and grain boundaries and their respective activation energies were determined without the electrode effects that could impede ionic transfer. An electron transference number was also estimated, ranging between 6.5% and 7.3% for 13 wt% $TiO_2$ and between 0.4% and 0.7% for 30 wt% $TiO_2$ in the coating. Because of the high electronic contribution to the total conductivity, the $Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ coating could be a new candidate material to obtain superior electrical conductivity as well as corrosion and wear resistances.

  • Various compositions of$ Cr_2$$O_3$/Mo composite powders were fabricated using spray-drying method and plasma-spray coatings of these powders were prepared to understand their tribological properties. Experiments were conducted using a reciprocal type tribo-tester at room temperature under dry sliding condition. The worn surface of coated specimens were observed using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and chemical compositions were analyzed using XRD (X-ray Diffractometry) and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). The results showed that friction coefficient of the Mo added specimens were lower than that of $Cr_2$$O_3$specimen. However $Cr_2$$O_3$specimen showed the lowest wear loss. Wear protecting layer were observed at the worn surface of coated specimens with Mo addition. From the XPS analysis, the mixed phases of $Cr_2$$O_3$ $CrO_3$and $MoO_3$were founded in the wear protecting layer.

  • The present report is the investigation of the effects of the HIP treatment on plasma-sprayed ceramic coating of $Al_2$O$_3$, $Al_2$O$_3$- SiO$_2$ on the metal substrate. These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing.
