  • This paper presents the evaluation of combustion characteristics of sing-hole plasma jet ignitions in comparison with conventional spark ignition for variable of swirl velocity. Plasma jet plugs are three types according to ejecting directions : center of chamber, positive and negative swirl flow direction. Experiments are carried out for equivalent ratio 1.0 of LPG-air mixture in a constant volume cylindrical vessel. Not only the flame propagation is photographed at intervals, but the pressure variation in the combustion chamber is also recorded throughout the entire combustion process. The results show that the plasma jet ignitions and spark ignition enhance the overall combustion rate by increasing the swirl velocity. The dependence of the combustion rate swirl velocity leade to the conclusion that the placma jet plug, which ejects plasma jet to the cwnter of combustion chamber is the most desirable ignitor than other plugs.

  • plasma group velocities of neon with oxygen admixture (ug) are obtained by intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera images at fixed gate width time of 5 ns. The propagation velocities outside interelectrode region are in the order of 104 m/s.The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by all fixed sinusoidal power supply, total gas flow and repetition frequency at 3 kV, 800 sccm and 40 kHz, respectively. The amount of oxygen admixture is varied from 0 to 2.75 %. By employing one dimensional convective wave packet model, the electron temperatures in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet are estimated to be in a range from 1.65 to 1.95 eV.

  • Neon and argon plasma group velocities (ug) are obtained by intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera images at fixed gate width time of 5 ns. The propagation velocities in upstream and downstream region are in the order of 104-105 m/s. The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 101-102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by sinusoidal power supply in varying voltages from 1 to 4 kV at repetition frequency of 40 kHz. By employing one dimensional convective wave packet model, the neon and argon electron temperatures in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet are estimated to be 1.95 and 1.18 eV, respectively.

  • This computational study features the transient compressible and inviscid flow analysis on a metallic plasma discharge from the opposing composite electrodes which is subjected to pulsed electric power. The computations have been performed using the flux corrected transport algorithm on the axisymmetric two-dimensional domain of electrode gap and outer space along with the calculation of plasma compositions and thermophysical properties such as plasma electrical conductivity. The mass ablation from aluminum electrode surfaces are modeled with radiative flux from plasma column experiencing intense Joule heating. The computational results shows the highly ionized and highly under-expanded supersonic plasma discharge with strong shock structure of Mach disk and blast wave propagation, which is very similar to muzzle blast or axial plasma jet flows. Also, the geometrical effects of composite electrodes are investigated to compare the amount of mass ablation and penetration depth of plasma discharge.

  • Two dimensional electrostatic model was used to investigate the interactions between beam electron and neutral plasma. It was found that results heavily depend on the beam density. When the beam electron density is lower than the ambient plasma beam density, many beam electrons exhibit vortex structure through beam-plasma interactions and can propagate into the ambient plasma easily from the injection area. On the other hand, when the beam density larget than that of the neutral ambient plasma, it was found that most of the beam electrons constitute return current and ion with much larger mass than that of the electron can be accelerated according to the magnetic field strength. Furthermore, as external field strength varies, it was found that propagation and interaction of the beam can show large dependence on it.

  • As an effective methods of plasma heating, neutral beam injection (NBI) systems based on negative hydrogen ion sources will be utilized in future magnetic-confinement nuclear fusion experiments. Because of the collisions between the fast negative ions and the neutral background gas, the positive ions are inevitable created in the acceleration region in the negative NBI system. These positive ions are accelerated back into the ion source and become high energy backstreaming ions. In order to explore the characters of backstreaming ions, the track and power deposition of backstreaming H+ beam is estimated using the experimental and simulation methods at NNBI test facility. Results show that the flux of backstreaming positive ions is 1.93 % of that of negative ion extraction from ion source, and the magnet filed in the beam source has an effect on the backstreaming positive ions propagation.

  • An axisymmetric, stationary electrodynamic model of the central engine of an active galactic nucleus has been well formulated by Macdonald and Thorne. In this model the relativistic region around the central black hole must be filled by highly conducting plasma and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics are then satisfied. In this paper we analyze magnetohydrodynamic wave propagation in this region. We find that there are three distinct types of waves - the Alfven wave and two magnetosonic waves. The wave equations turn out to be not very different from those in nonrelativistic case except they are redshifted.

  • Packet propagation and absorption for the 28 GHz superconducting ECRIS under developing by KBSI Pusan center is analyzed with limited parameter range. The microwave power generated by 28 GHz gyrotron is axially injected to the plasma cavity through waveguide system. According to the analytical ray tracing calculation, the wave packet launched quasi-longitudinally at a high magnetic field side changes its direction from outward to inward as it is approaching resonance layer. Therefore, initially diverging wave does not likely hit a conducting surface before absorbing by electron cyclotron resonance. Also, absorption by plasma with moderate electron density is so strong that reflection by an extraction plate may not be expected.

  • In the electro-discharge machining the machining performance is closely related to the characteristics of discharge which can be identified from electrical behavior in gap between workpiece and electrode. Therefore, the accurate prediction of electrical behavior in electro-discharge machining (EDM) is useful to process control and optimization. However, any simulation model fur prediction of electrical behavior in EDM process has never been reported until now. In this study, a simulation model is developed to analyze the electrical behavior of electro-discharge plasma which significantly influences electrical behavior in EDM process. For the purpose of this the fundamentals of electro-discharge mechanism such as inception, propagation, formation of plasma channel and termination are investigated to accurately predict the cycle of discharge plasma in EDM. As a result, a mathematical model of electro-discharge plasma is constructed with considering the fundamentals of electro-discharge plasma. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the developed model can predict the electrical behavior of plasma such as electron density in various conditions.
