Discharge and Luminous Characteristics of Coplanar Type Xe Plasma Flat Lamp (면방전형 Xe 플라즈마 평판 램프의 방전 및 발광 특성)

  • The Xe plasma flat lamp, considered to be a new eco-friendly LCD backlight, requires a further improvement of its luminance and luminous efficiency. To improve the performance of this type of lamp, it is necessary to understand the effects of the discharge variables on the luminous characteristics of the lamp. In this study, the luminous characteristics of a coplanartype Xe plasma flat lamp with a teeth-type electrode pattern were analyzed while varying the gas composition, gas pressure and input voltage. The effects of the phosphor layer on the discharge and the luminous characteristics of the lamp were also studied. The luminous efficiency of the coplanar-type Xe plasma flat lamp improved as the Xe input ratio and gas pressure increased. Higher luminous efficiency was also obtained when helium (He) was used as a buffer gas and when a phosphor layer was fabricated on the electrode region. In contrast, the luminous efficiency was reduced with increasing the input voltage. It was found that the infrared emissions from the lamp were affected by the Xe excitation rate in the plasma, the Xe gas density, the collisional quenching of excited Xe species by gas molecules, and the recombination rate between the Xe ions and electrons.

For improving brightness, life time, efficiency of flat lamp, plasma diagnosis of the flat lamp lighting source to understand property of lighting source is very important. distance of discharge electrode is 5.5mm and width is 16.5mm, we measured electron temperature and electron density measured with single langmuir probe in flat lamp. we tested the discharge from 100 Torr to 300 Torr pressure. the Pulse is rectangular pulse with frequency 20kHz and Duty ratio 20%. Resultly, electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the gas pressure and electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the voltage.

  • The study on discharge of the flat lamp lighting source has been requested increasingly. To improve the brightness, life time and efficiency of flat lamp, the plasma diagnosis of flat lamp lighting source is very important. When a distance of discharge electrode is 5.5mm and width is 16.5mm, we measured electron temperature and electron density with single Langmuir probe in flat lamp. Pressure conditions to test the plasma discharge from 100 Torr to 300 Torr. The power supply was PDS-4000 with frequency 20kHz and duty ratio $20\%.$ Form these experimental results, electron temperature was decreased according to increase the gas pressure and the voltage while electron density was increased.

  • A Xe plasma flat lamp, which has been noticed as a new eco-friendly LCD (liquid crystal display) backlight, requires the improvement of the luminance and the luminous efficiency although it has several advantages. To improve the performance of a lamp, it is necessary to understand the effects of discharge variables on the luminous characteristics of the lamp. Since it is difficult to diagnose a lamp discharge experimentally, the numerical analysis can be used instead. In this study, the luminous characteristics of a planar type Xe plasma flat lamp were analyzed with the variation of an input voltage and a pulse frequency. The numerical analysis of a lamp discharge was then performed using a RCT (relaxation continuum) model and a LFA (local field approximation) model. The comparison with the experimental results showed that the RCT model is valid for the numerical analysis of the flat lamp. The numerical analysis also showed that the modifications of a high frequency component and a voltage falling rate in the input voltage waveform could improve the luminous characteristics of the lamp.

  • 차세대 LCD back light 시스템으로 Xe plasma plat lamp를 주목하고 있으나 자외선 여기 효율이 떨어져 램프의 휘도 및 광 효율이 낮은 단점을 가지고 있어 이에 따른 개선이 요구되고 있다. MgO는 AC-PDP에서 방전전압의 저하, 방전의 안정성, 동작마진과 같은 특성에 영향을 미치고 있기에 이번 연구 에서는 졸겔법으로 제작한 MgO를 프린팅 방법으로 flat fluorescent lamp에 적용하였다. 실험시 사용한 flat fluorescent lamp의 경우 ITO 전극과 MgO layer 그리고 형광체층을 가진 두 장의 유리판 사이에 Ne-Xe기체를 채운 단순한 구조로 제작하였다. 실험은 압력과 방전거리에 따른 특성을 살펴보았으며, 그 결과 MgO layer 채용한 경우 방전 전압의 감소 및 static margin의 증가를 알 수 있었다.

  • In this work, a coplanar-type plasma flat fluorescent lamp having cross type of electrode was fabricated by screen printing and sealing technique. Cross type of electrode with a dielectric layer were screen-printed on a rear glass plate, and then fired at $550^{\circ}C$. Phosphor was printed on and fired at $450^{\circ}C$. Finally, the lamp was sealed by frit glass at $450^{\circ}C$. The lamp of cross electrode type was studied depending on the electrode gap and the thickness of dielectric layer.
