When electrical engineers get started with the design of main electrical system of a complex petrochemical plant along with chemical and mechanical engineers, they are usually confronted with lack of power system data. This paper presents a procedure how to perform power system stability analysis for the purpose of design studies within the limited system data given and to verify the given data to get reliable convergence in dynamic simulation as well as to apply the stability analysis result on practical system design. The power system stability analysis on the Cadereyta petrochemical plant in Mexico is provided as a study case.
This paper addresses the design of State-feedback Robust Guaranteed-Cost Controllers with controller gain variations. Since the unstructured uncertainty is the most dominant uncertainty in the modeling of the plant, the plant is assumed to have the unstructured uncertainty. It is necessary to take the controller parameter perturbation into consideration when we design the robust controller. Otherwise, the resulting controller may show the fragility property. That is to say, the extremely small controller parameter variation may result in the instability of the overall closed-loop system. Therefore, the design purpose is that the maximum performance index is guaranteed in the presence of the unstructured plant uncertainty and controller parameter variations ...
In this paper, we propose a new rubust design scheme of a variable structure type model reference control (VS-MRC) which can be applied to linear time-varing plants. Our idea is started from the hypothesis that the plant consists of two parts, i.e., one has time-invariant parameters and the other has time-varying parameters. We consider the former the nominal part of the plant and the latter a kind of disturbance to the nominal one. In this design scheme, the ordinary VS-MRC is adopted to the nominal part and the signum function is introduced to eliminate the influence of the disturbance.
This research has suggested a method to select pipe wall thickness by application of the value engineering to reduce the cost and quantity that are major part of construction materials. This research shows that the application of value engineering reduces the cost of piping materials by optimizing pipe wall thickness while maintaining process flow date of design pressure and design temperature. Based on this knowledge, the application of the value engineering will lead to the cost reduction and quantity reduction by effective selection of pipe wall thickness. The application of the value engineering will help the EPC companies to win a contract in the overseas plant market.

This paper describes the design of a robust H-infinity attitude controller for a quad-rotor. The linear model of a quad-rotor was estimated using PEM (Prediction Error Minimization) method with experimental input and output data. To design an attitude controller, an extended plant was constructed by adjusting several uncertainties and weighting functions. An H-infinity controller was obtained by applying H-infinity methodology to the extended plant. Through frequency-domain analysis, it was shown that the designed controller can overcome uncertainties up to 75% of the plant model. The performance and robustness of the controller were verified through time-domain simulation.

This study presents a plant concept design for a smart factory which is mainly targeted to machine airplane parts. The plant layout is based on the TOC-DBR approach together with autonomous distributed factory control considered, while discrete event simulation is also performed in order to validate its layout. The resulting layout and its procedure turn out to be quite a useful guideline in realizing those smart factories especially for machining-oriented manufacturing industries.
LDV measurements in large cavitation tunnel around a propeller in operation are carried out to provide valuable information for more accurate wake-adapted propeller design and to study hull-propeller interactions. Effective velocities are computed by both the simplified vortex ring method and by RANS solver with the body force representing the propeller load. The former method uses the nominal velocities measured at the propeller plane as an input data of the numerical method and shows a better agreement with experimental data. The latter shows the qualitative agreement and may be used as an alternative design tools in the preliminary design stage.

Korean contractors have been maintained sustainable growth since entering into overseas construction market for the first time in 1960' s. In 2010, Korean contractors ordered 761 billion (USD) from overseas markets. Especially, billion (USD) were earned by Korean contractors in overseas plant construction market which account for more than 80% of the total amount by Korean contractors. Nevertheless, many Korean contractors are suffering from lack of technological competitiveness and construction management skills in the design phase compared with global leading contractors. These conditions have directly effect on the success of projects in terms of cost, duration, and quality. So, this study focused on identifying the risk factors and developing risk priority method for the design phase of LNG plant projects whose market is expanding. Research procedures were conducted by the following three steps. First, total 57 risk factors were identified in design phase through extensive literature reviews and experts survey. Second, the authors developed risk priority method which are more suitable for design phase of LNG plant projects by using three criteria, Probability(P), Impact(I), and Coordination Index(CI). Finally, the suitability of risk priority method and practical applicability were verified through expert survey and interview. Consequently, if korean contractors use the suggested risk factors and priority method based on their own know-how and experiences, then more reasonable and rational risk management will be conducted in the design phase of LNG plant projects.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process is the most widely applied technology for the denitrification of coal-fired power plant flue gases due to its selectivity and high efficiency. In order to attain the optimum design of SCR process, it is required to consider various catalysis characteristics as well as various operating conditions. A systematic study to elucidate the effects of the design conditions(reaction temperature, $NH_3/NO$ mole ratio, space velocity and linear velocity) on the reduction of NOx using the SCR pilot plant with maximum flue gas flow rate of $1,000Nm^3/hr$ was carried out and employed to identify the optimum design parameters. Design approaches of SCR process with test results were also presented.
KHNP CRI has been developing APR+ nuclear power plant since 2007, which is GEN III+ model with 1500 MWe capacity. To develop safer and more economical nuclear power plant than APR1400, we investigated advanced design features of ALWR(advanced light water reactor) being constructed in Korea and being developed/constructed in foreign countries. We applied the advanced design features and lessons learned from Fukushima accident to develop APR+ standard design suitable for both domestic construction and overseas construction business. Three economic assessments have performed during standard design phase of APR+. The result of the 3th(final) economic analysis for APR+ standard design showed that APR+ N-th plant was about 23% more economical than coal-fired 1,000MW power plant.
