The compounds of recycled polyethylene(PE) and fly-ashes were prepared. Polymers used were sorted PE from mixed plastics of household waste and Low Density Polyethylene(LDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene(LLDPE) recycled from the scrap of packaging film plants. Fly-ashes were from the power plant and from the household waste incinerator. The tensile strength of recycled LDPE and LLDPE compounds decreased and the flexural modulus increased with greater amount of the power plant fly-ash. Anthracite fly-ash gave rise to slightly higher tensile and flexural strength of the LLDPE mixtures than bituminous coal fly-ash presumably due to higher content of unburned carbon. The incinerator fly-ash introduced to household waste PE enhanced both tensile strength and flexural modulus of the compounds. When LDPE and household waste PE were used together, the synergistic effect of incinerator fly-ash to household waste PE was offset by reduced crystallization of LDPE due to the filler particle. The compounds of household waste PE and incinerator fly-ash might be applied to structural materials for such as sewage pipe, which reduces the waste treatment cost and conserve the environment and resources.
Coal fly ash, produced from a power plant in Korea was used for the production of glass-ceramics and the physical properties of glass-ceramics were evaluated. CaO and TiO$_2$ were added into the fly ash during the melting process to reduce the viscosity of molten glass and to induce internal crystallization of glass, respectively. Glass-ceramic was produced through a single stage heat treatment (at 950∼1050$\^{C}$ for 37∼240 min) after preparing glass (iota fly ash powder. As a result, a new tiny rod type crystals (a=7.4480, b=10.7381, c=4.3940 A, $\alpha$=94.9, $\beta$=98.6, γ=108.5°) was found in the glass-ceramics, which showed attractive mechanical properties, high hardness (7.1∼7.6 GPa) and wear resistance (by erosion test). Thus a glass-ceramic produced from thermal power plant fly ash and cell as a source for CaO exhibits a suitable treatment for the recycling and exploitation of waste materials and would be acceptable for a new application far building materials.

According to Vietnam government establishes additional thermal power plant, processing the coal ash from power plant is urgent issue. This study targeted reducing unburned carbon contents in low quality fly ash to below 6% that according to international standards. As a result, the unburned carbon contents of low quality fly ash was high and irregular as 5.3~23.6%, and it was possible to reduce unburned cabon contents to under 6%, in case of unburned carbon contents below 9.8% ashes using air classification, in case of unburned carbon contents below 23.6% ashes using combined process composed of air classification and electrostatic separation.
Economic feasibility for retrofitting the wet bottom ash handling system to the dry system in a existing 500MW${\times}$2 units pulverized coal thermal power plant in Korea was studied. Replacing to the dry system requires the initial capital costs of 13,415,127,000\, and saves the operating costs of 935,345,000\ per year. Economic analyses based on these results showed that the initial capital cost would not be recovered within the service life of the facilities at the interest rate of 10%, and the internal rate of return of 5.6% were obtained. Thus, the retrofitting to the dry system was not economically favorable in the current condition. However, the retrofitting would be profitable when the ash disposal cost and ash selling price were increased over 15,000\/MT or 17,000\/MT, respectively.
In most coal fired power plants, fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in the electrostatic precipitator are transported and stored in a silo. However the properties of the fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in electrostatic precipitator varies with the distance of the collection field from the boiler. The more distance hopper gets fly ash with larger specific surface area. Therefore, in electrostatic precipitator the hopper itself is expected to have the effect of classifying fly ashes. This study examines the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash, collected from each of hoppers attached to an electrostatic precipitator in the coal fired power plant and looks into the possibility of the electrostatic precipitator being used as a classifier. Also, the study reviewed the possibility of acquiring high quality fly ash.
In this study, the possibility of the utilization of coal ash as earthwork materials is investigated. For this purpose, some laboratory experiments were carried out. The samples used in these tests are fly ash(FA), bottom ash(BA), coal ash dropped into ash pond(FA:BA=8:2), and mixed coal ash(FA:BA=5:5), which were discharged as a by-product at Yong-Yeul thermoelectric power plant, and general road filling materials. And for the deformation analysis of coal ash reclamation ground, several hyperbolic model parameters were determined by triaxial compression test. As a result of this study, coal ash has excellent engineering properties such as strength parameters comparing with general soils of the same grain size, especially in case of being used as backfill materials and reclamation materials on soft ground, and coal ash is superior to general earthwork materials in engineering properties becasuse of self hardening behaveiour, light weight property, etc.
An electric precipitator in a thermal electric power plant is essential equipment for preventing air environment pollution. However, it is difficult for the existing control systems to make efficient effects on dust collection. This is because AVC and ERC consist of independent, separate systems in the existing systems. To solve this problem, we developed an intelligent distributed control system, which makes optimal control possible through connection operations between the control systems. In this paper, we analyzed system performance and fly ash reduction effects through the developed system structure, development contents and its actual application to power plant.

Distribution of rare earth metals (REMs) and rare valuable metals (RVMs) contents in coal ashes (fly ash, bottom ash, and pond ash) and leachate from 11 coal-fired power plants in Korea were investigated. Coal ashes and leachates were found to contain important REMs and RVMs such as Yttrium (Y) and Neodymium (Nd), which was in the range of 23~75 mg/kg. However, it still requires developing effective recovery and separation methods in order to utilize REMs and RVMs in ash and leachate. Recovery of valuable elements (Y and Nd) from various and extensive ash sources (8.21 million tons/year in 2013) can provide the existing power plants with additional profit; therefore, it can significantly improve economics of the power plants.

Non-refining fly ash and bottom ash, the byproducts generated from the coal-fired power stations, have usually been disposed of in onshore ash disposal sites. With an increase of power consumption due to industrial development, the generation of coal ash has been growing tremendously. Current insufficiency of disposal sites and environmental concerns over newly-built disposal sites have also led a growing need to utilize the coal ash. Accordingly, this paper compares and analyzes the fundamental properties of the coal ash collected from each disposal sites in order to increase the usability of the coal ash generated from coal-fired power stations. The results of the study indicate that coal ash shall be separately applied by the properties for each intended use as the ash greatly differs in its properties depending on the site of disposal. In particular, it is shown that the overall evaluation on the ash shall be necessary as the quality might be varied by the change of absorptance when applied as an aggregate for concrete. From the examination on the salt content, it has been observed that the ash can be applied as an aggregate for concrete only after more than 3 times of washing process.
In this study, I analyzed the effect of slagging caused by blending bituminous coal and subbituminous coal while maintaining the generator output, combustion conditions, and ventilation conditions for 870MW thermal power plant designed with bituminous coal. Accordingly I proposed an acceptable method of blending coal method. the blending ratio of sub-bituminous coal was adjusted to 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, etc. to confirm ultimate analysis, proximate analysis, ash fusion temperature change, slagging indices, etc. Proper blending coal conditions are blending with sub-bituminous coal at 40% or less, ratio of base component to acid component(B/A) is 0.4 or less or 1 or more, total alkali(TA) is 3.5 or less, fusion slagging index(Rfs) is 1,345℃ or more, and ash content is 13% or less in ultimate analysis, the ash content in proximate analysis is 15% or less, and the initial deformation temperature(IDT) should be at least 1,200℃ or more
