This experiment was conducted to compare the dry matter yields and feed values of summer forage crops such as two cultivars of Maize, two cultivars of Sorghum hybrid and one Japanese millet at the Dae-Ho reclaimed tideland, Korea from 2002 to 2003. Seasonal changes of soil salt content maintained somewhat low at early stage and increased at growing stage and then decreased at harvest time. The dry matter yield was 6,102, 4,557 and 2,928 kg/ha, respectively, for Japanese millet Sorghum hybrid and Maize. The highest Crude protein(CP) content was recorded in sorghum hybrid. Neutral detergent fiber.(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) contents were highest in Japanese millet following Sorghum hybrid and Maize in turn. The highest sodium content in plant tissue was recorded in Japanese millet. These results suggest that Japanese millet is the most suitable summer forage crops for cultivation on reclaimed tideland in view of the good emergence and forage production.
Contents of mineral element and cytokinin in the xylem sap of 'Keumdongee' and 'Tongilhwang' oriental melons were compared with those in oriental melons grafted onto 8 rootstocks. The effect of grafting on the fruit quality of oriental melon was also investigated. Flesh firmness varied with rootstocks. Soluble solids contents in the placenta tissue of grafted 'Tongilhwang' were higher than that in the 'Keumdongee'. Electric conductivity of the xylem sap in own-rooted plants was higher in 'Keumdongee' than in 'Tongilhwang', but it increased in 'Tongilhwang' once they were grafted. The sap volume per plant was greater in 'Keumdongee' than in 'Tongilhwang'. The mineral concentrations varied considerably depending on the rootstock used. Xylem sap of grafted oriental melons contained a higher amount of mineral ions, especially $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO_4{^-}$, than did the sap in own-rooted plants. The increase in the mineral levels in sap due to grafting was most apparent in 'Tongilhwang'. Xylem sap from both 'Keumdongee' and 'Tongilhwang' contained trans-zeatin (t-Z), trans-zeatin riboside (t-ZR), and dihydrozeatin riboside (DHZR). Small amounts of isopentenyl adenine (IPA) and isopentenyl adenine riboside (IPAR) were also detected. Trans-zeatin riboside was the most abundant, followed by t-Z. Cytokinin concentration in 'Keumdongee' was not significantly influenced by rootstock type used, although the highest concentration of cytokinins in 'Keumdongee' was obtained with 'Chamtozwa' rootstock. However, the cytokinin concentration in 'Tongilhwang' increased with grafting irrespective of rootstock type used.
Objective of this research was to investigate the influence of liming fertilizers on changes in soil chemical properties and growth of pansy 'Melody Yellow' in plug production. To achieve this, dolomite (DO) with 0, 1.0, 3.5, 8.0 or $13.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and calcium carbonate (CC) with 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, or $4.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in application rate were incorporated into peatmoss + vermiculite (1:1, v/v) during the formulation. The treatments of $3.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO and 2.5 or $3.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of CC had acceptable range of soil solution pH such as 5.6-6.2. Faster rising of pH was observed in root media containing CC rather than those of DO, indicating higher solubility of CC. The soil Ca concentrations in all treatments of CC were 2 times as high as those of DO. The treatments of 3.5 or $8.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO had the highest soil Mg concentrations, but all treatments of CC had lower soil Mg concentrations than control indicating that additional applications of Mg fertilizers are required. The elevated application rate of DO or CC resulted in the increase of fresh and dry weight; however, plant heights were not influenced by application of liming fertilizers. The results of tissue analysis showed that application of DO or CC influenced the Ca and Mg contents, but did not influence the contents of other nutrients such as N, P, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.
Proper skin care promotes good metabolism and the biological activity of skin, helps maintain the skin in a healthy and beautiful state when combined with nutritional nourishment. Health functional foods are being used for the purpose of enhancing efficient skin care. Health functional foods related to skin care maintain the epidermis, dermal fibroblast layer and subcutaneous tissue that form the skin. Efficient functional foods alleviate the signs of endogenous aging that come with getting older and exogenous aging caused by sunlight. Even though the field of skin care related to health functional foods has received less attention and been the subject of less research compared to functional cosmetics which are developing widely, this area of skin care that maintains and improves the layer of dermal fibroblast through the intake of food, is expected to progress with the commercialization of products in many fields when the related technical research development is galvanized and the related patents are applied for. Research into health functional foods related to skin care in Korea started rather late in comparison to other advanced countries where patents for relevant techniques have been applied for since 1990's together with research conducted on how they might be used for practical purposes. This study used the key words 'skin care, health functional food' to search for Korean patents that have been applied for at the Korean Intellectual Property Office from 1983 to 2011 using the KIPRIS database, in order to help researchers in the related fields by organizing the patented formulas for health functional foods for skin care which have gained attention recently. According to the number of registrations in each industry field, the total number of patents was 1,120 we screened the major patents among them, the field with the largest number was food foodstuff non-alcoholic beverage and preparation or treatment(A23L) with 135, then natural plant medicine & medical supplies and cosmetics(A61K) with 112, microorganisms or enzymes(C12N) with 63, heterocyclic compounds(C07D) with 44, horticulture or cultivation of sea weeds, forestry(A01G) 16 times, listed from the highest to the lowest number of applications. It has been revealed that food, foodstuff, non-alcoholic beverage and preparation or treatment(A23L) was the industry field where the most patents for health functional foods related to skin care were registered.
Commercial Bio- Green(B.G.) functional water was manufactured through a series of processes : water - ultra-purification - adding catalysts - energy imprinting fermenting with energized water + zeolite and others + photosynthetic bacteria in fermenter longrightarrow filtering. Control(0), 5 or 10 liters per plant of B.G. functional water were supplied to the orchard soil under canopy of 10 year- old ‘Tsugaru’/M26 apple trees on March 20, May 20 and June 20, 1995, respectively. pH and content of Ca and Mg of orchard soil were increased by supply with B.G. functional water. However, P$_2$$O_{5}$, K, and B contents were not influenced by the treatment. At harvest time soluble solid content of flesh tissue and anthocyanin of fruit skin were increased by the treatment. B.G functional water treatment showed higher root activities, and photosynthesis of leaves than that of control. Also B.G. functional water treatment enhanced Ca content in fruit skin and flesh tissues, whereas not affected N, K, and Mg contents. During storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ cold room, the more volume of B.G. functional water supply showed lower bitter pit symptom. Respiration and ethylene evolution in fruit decreased, while fruit firmness increased by the treatment during storage.
CDPKs have pivotal roles in plant $Ca^{2+}$-mediated transduction signaling. A total of 29 CDPK genes have been identified in rice (Oryza sativa L.), but their key functions have not been completely noted. This study focused on the OsCPK11 gene, which has not been studied, to determine its functional characteristics. A study of tissue-specific expressions revealed that the OsCPK11 gene is expressed in young leaves, mature leaves and flowers of rice. An expression of the gene was also confirmed in gibberellin-treated aleurone layers of rice. Regarding the phenotypic characteristics of Tos17-inserted OsCPK11 mutants, the heights of the mutants were not distinguishable from the heights of wild type plants, but the number of caryopses and the caryopses' weights were significantly statistically different. In addition, many grains of the mutants had white belly materials in their endosperm. The cDNA of the OsCPK11 was cloned, and an OsCPK11 protein of about 60.5 kD was obtained by using a GST affinity chromatography and an SDS-PAGE. An analysis of the amino-acid sequence of the protein indicated that the OsCPK11 protein has the structural characteristics of typical CDPKs. The results provided useful information about the functions of the OsCPK11 gene and further noted the roles CDPKs have in $Ca^{2+}$-mediated signaling in plants.

This study was performed to develop new cosmeceutical agents with sebosuppressive activity from native plant extracts in Korea. Inhibitory efforts of the extracts on $5{\alpha}-reductase$ (5-AR) were evaluated by enzyme kinetics analysis using UV-spectrophotometric method. Two kinds of enzyme suspensions as 5-AR sources were prepared from rat liver tissue and cultured hSG cells. The sebosuppressive effects were determined by measuring the total lipid quantity produced in cultured hSG cells after incubation with the extracts. As a result, Pinus thunbergii extracts showed the most potent 5-AR inhibitory effects. Its $K_i$ values were 0.0002% and 0.0014% for rat liver 5-AR and human sebaceous gland 5-AR, respectively. Addition of Pinus thunberii extract to hSG cells showed 48% reduction in total lipid production at 0.005% concentration. In conclusion, Pinus thunbergii extracts can be used as a cosmeceutical agent to regulate sebum production and to alleviate the sebum-involved skin diseases, such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis.

This study has investigated the biosynthesis and function of the heavy metal binding peptides, the phytochelatins, in plants. PCs are synthesised enzymatically from glutathione by the enzyme PC synthase in the presence of heavy metal ions. Using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model organism cadmium-sensitive, phytochelatin-deficient mutants have been isolated and characterised in previous studies. The cadl mutants have wildtype levels of glutathione, are PC deficient and lack PC synthase activity. Thus, the CADl gene has been proposed to encode PC synthase. The CADl gene was isolated by a positional cloning strategy The gene was mapped and a candidate identified. Each of four cadl mutants had a single base pair change in the candidate gene and the cadmium-sensitive, cadl phenotype was complemented by the candidate gene. This demonstrated the CADl gene had been cloned. A homologous gene in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe was identified through database searches. A targeted-deletion mutation of this gene was constructed and the mutant, like cadl mutants of Arabidopsis, was cadmium-sensitive and PC-deficient. A comparison of the redicted amino acid sequences reveals a highly conserved N-terminal region Presumed to be the catalytic domain and a variable C-terminal region containing multiple Cys residues proposed to be involved in activation of the enzyme by metal ions. Similar genes were also identified in animal species. The Arabidopsis CADl/AtPCSl and S. pombe SpbPCS genes were expressed in E. coli and were shown to be sufficient for glutathione-dependent, heavy metal activate PC synthesis in vitro, thus demonstrating these genes encode PC synthase enzymes. Using RT-PCR, AtPCSl expression appeared to be independent of Cd exposure. However, at higher levels of Cd exposure a AtPCSl-CUS reporter gene construct appeared to be more highly expressed. Using the reporter gene construct, AtPCSl was expressed most tissues. Expression appeared to be greater in younger tissues and same higher levels of expression was observed in some regions, including carpels and the base of siliques. AtPCS2 was a functional gene encoding an active PC synthase. However, its Pattern of expression and the phenotype of a mutant (or antisense line) have not been determined. Assuming the gene is functional then it has clearly been maintained through evolution and must provide some selective advantage. This implies that, at least in some cells or tissue, it is likely to be the dominant PC synthase expressed. This remains to be determined
Abilities of various edible plants and natural antioxidants to protect brain against oxidative damages were evaluated using brain homogenate of perfused Sprague-Dawley rat. Oxidative damage, expressed as lipid peroxidation (LPO), indicating total quantity of malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenal, increased from 4.1 to 6.9nmol/mg protein by treatment of $2.5{\mu}M$ ferrous sulfate and 7.5mM hydrogen peroxide as source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on brain homogenate for 10min at $37^{\circ}C$ Mallow(88%) in leafy vegetables, small potato (93%) in root vegetables, green red pepper (76%) in fruit vegetables, and avocado (96%) in fruits showed highest LPO inhibition capacities. Ability of mushrooms decreased in order of nameko, shiitake, pine mushroom, oyster mushroom, and new type pine mushroom. Among natural antioxidants tested, (+)catechin (91%), (-)epigallocatechin gallate (85%), (-)epicatechin gallate (83%), and kaempferol(83%) showed high LPO inhibition capacities.
Isolated rat adipocytes are well known to possess opposite pathways of lipid metabolism: lipolysis and ipogenesis. Both of the metabolism respond to various biologically active substances such as epinephrine, ACTH and insulin. Epinephrine and ACTH stimulate lipolysis and insulin accelerates lipogenesis. Recently, Korean red ginseng powder was found to contain adenosine and an acidic poptide which inhibited epinephrine-induced lipolysis and sl imulated insulin-mediated lipogenesis from added glucose. The acidic peptide is consisted mainly of glutamic acid and glucose. Ginsenosides Rb1 and Re inhibited ACTH-induced lipolysis in isolated rat adipocytes, while they did not affect insulinstimulated lipogenesis, Thus, all these substances extracted from Korean red ginseng exhibited selective modulations toward the opposite metabolic pathways in rat adipocyte; They inhibited the lipolysis but not the lipogenesis. We call these substances"selective modulators". Recently, we isolated a toxic substance named "toxohormone-L " from ascites fluid of patients with various malignant tumors. The toxohormone-L stimulated lipolysis in rat adipocytes and induced anorexia in rats. Both the lipolytic and the anorexigenic actions of toxohormone-L were found to be inhibited by ginsenoside Rb2 in Korean red ginseng. Based on these results, physiological signifi¬cances of these substances in Korean red ginseng were discussed. Pan ax ginseng is a medicinal plant long used in treatment of various pathological states including general complaints such as head ache, shoulder ache, chilly constitution and anorexia in cancer patients, There have been many pharmacological studies on Panax ginseng roots. Petkovllreported that oral administration of an aqueous alcoholic extract of ginseng roots decreased the blood sugar levtl of rabbits. Saito2lreported that Panax ginseng suppressed hyperglycemia induced by epinephrine and high carbohydrate diets. These findings suggest that Panax ginseng roots contain insulin-like substances. Previously, we demonstrated that gin¬seng roots contain an insulin-like peptide which inhibits epinephrine-induced lipolysis and stimulated insulin-mediated lipogenesis. In 1984, we suggested that such an insulin-like substance should be called a selective modulator4). Present investigation describes the details of the selective modulators in ginseng roots. During progressive weight loss in patients with various neoplastic disease, depletion of fat stores have been observed. The depletion of body fat during growth of neoplasms is associated with increase in plasma free fatty acids. Recently, we found that the ascites fluid from patients with hepatoma or ovarian tumor and the pleural fluid from patients with malignant lymphoma elicited fatty acid release in slices of rat adipose tissue in vitro. The lipolytic factor, named"toxohormone-L". was purifed from the ascites fluid of patients with hepatoma. The isolated preparation gave a single band on both disc gel electrophoresis and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)-acrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of ${\beta}$-mercaptoethanol. Its molecular weight was determined to be 70,000-75,000 and 65,000 by SDS-acrylamide gel electrophoresis and analytical ultracentrifugation, respectively. Injection of toxohormone-L into the lateral ventricle of rats significantly suppressed food and water intakes. There was at least 5 hr delay between its injection and appearance of its suppressive effect. In the present study, we also tried to find a inhibitory substance toward toxohormone-L from root powder of ginseng.
