  • Heavy chemical industries have nonlinear loads including elecrolyzers. AC-DC converters are the most widely used in an elecrolysis in a chemical plant. The electrolysis consists of AC-DC converter groups connected in parallel at the DC side. The converter operations cause harmonic currents and create distortions on the sinusoidal voltage of the AC power system. This paper provides an in depth analysis on harmonics field measurement for the electrolyzer loads and harmonics assessment by the international harmonic standards IEC 61000-3-6 and IEEE 519-1992.

  • Mikania micrantha, a neo-tropical vine, is spreading rapidly in the tropical part of Nepal and is now threatening the rural ecosystem including biodiversity and rural livelihoods. However, no attempt has been made to control the spread of M. micrantha. As a result, the vines are spreading freely and rapidly. After a thorough literature review and assessment of forest management practices, we proposed a manual cutting method, as it suits the Nepalese situation for several reasons: required labor is readily available, as local communities are managing forest patches, and the method does not have any potential adverse effects on non-target native species. Experimental plots were laid out in August 2011 to examine the effectiveness of manual cutting. Two different site types based on canopy coverage were selected and divided into three blocks based on cutting strategy. Four treatments were assigned across the experimental plots following a complete block design. We harvested above-ground biomass according to the assigned treatment. The results suggested that there should be at least two consecutive cuttings within a 3-week interval before flowering, and that three consecutive cuttings resulted in 91% mortality of the vines. In addition, cutting promoted regeneration of native plant species. Employing regular cutting operations can modify understory shade enhancing regeneration of native species, which is a desirable condition to constrain proliferation of M. micrantha. Periodic cuttings reduced the competitiveness of M. micrantha regardless of canopy openness, but native ground cover should be retained.

  • Sub-bottom profiler(SBP) has been used extensively for the mapping of basement in the foundation design of offshore structure, for pre- and post-dredging operations within harbors and channels, for selection of pipeline routes, sitting of drilling platforms, and in the exploration for an aggregates such as sands and gravels. During the construction of Siwha embankment for irrigation water and the expansion of arable land, the breaking of an embankment unfortunately occurred so that a lot of riprap was swept away and widely dispersed by the tide and strong current. The feasibility study for the construction of the tidal-powered electric plant in Siwha embankment was performed quite recently. Therefore we made use of SBP survey to investigate the distribution of the lost riprap. We could successfully map out the distribution of the lost riprap from the reflection amplitude characteristics of the sediments in SBP data set. We demonstrated the variation of reflection amplitude versus the sediments with and/or without riprap by means of the numerical modeling of acoustic wave equation using finite difference method. Also we examined an amplitude anomaly of the ripraped area through the physical modeling using ultrasonic.

  • Evolutionary operation (EVOP) is a continuous improvement system which explores a region of process operating conditions by deliberately creating some systematic changes to the process variable levels without jeopardizing the product. It is aimed at securing a satisfactory operating condition in full-scale manufacturing processes, which is generally different from that obtained in laboratory or pilot plant experiments. Information on how to improve the process is generated from a simple experimental design. Traditional EVOP procedures are established on the assumption that the variance of the response variable should be small and stable in the region of the process operation. However, it is often the case that process noises have an influence on the stability of the process. This process instability is due to many factors such as raw materials, ambient temperature, and equipment wear. Therefore, process variables should be optimized continuously not only to meet the target value but also to keep the variance of the response variables as low as possible. We propose a scheme to achieve robust process improvement. As a process performance measure, we adopted the mean square error (MSE) of the replicate response values on a specific operating condition, and used the Kruskal-Wallis test to identify significant differences between the process operating conditions.

  • Compared with the sludge from gravity sedimentation, it is difficult for operations to settle the sludge occurred from dissolved-air-flotation (DAF). Even though there are some problems in treating DAF sludge with conventional gravity thickeners, those has been used until now. In this study, Solid Flux theory for gravity thickening was applied to the Solid Flux of DAF sludge through flotation in order to develop new methodology for treatment of DAF sludge. Also, characteristics of DAF sludge were investigated. From the experiment results, it was revealed that the higher the polymer dosage, at fixed the solid concentration, the greater the rising velocity becomes. When we applied solid flux theory, the relationship, which is similar to that of gravity thickening, has been achieved. Also, we could find the proper polymer dosage from the rising velocity is about 50 mg/L. Consequently, the limiting solid flux can be derived from the relationship between the total solid flux and the withdrawal velocity of DAF sludge. Furthermore, the factors, such as solid concentrations, bubble volume, pH, zeta potential, and temperature, have effects on the flotation and sedimentation for DAF sludge treatment.

  • Around the world are increasing the demand for ESS. Currently, the domestic is expected to benefit by operating ESS. In the domestic, it is expected to benefit from operations of the installed ESS because of the introduction of ESS less capacity. However ESS capacity to the maximum profit occurs is unknown. ESS is different from the charge-discharge characteristics and the reserve to replace, depending on the application. Therefore, it should be established in accordance with the ESS optimal capacity according to the purpose used because it can maximize the quality and efficiency of the electric energy. To the ESS optimal capacity estimation by the purpose used, It should compare the investment cost caused by ESS facility installation and operation cost caused by operating ESS. In this paper, the operation mathematical model for estimating marginal operation costs established. In operation mathematical model, operating cost is considered fuel cost and no-load cost start-up cost. Because no-load cost and start-up cost are not related to cost and power plant output, there are expressed an integer variable costs as a step function.

  • Livestock production in Vietnam is, as in most Asian countries, increasing rapidly and changing into specialized highly intensified operations. The volume of animal excreta generated exceeds the capacity of the operation land base and cannot be utilized efficiently. As a consequence, there is a loss of plant nutrients from livestock farms that causes environmental pollution. This study carried out a feed and excretion experiment measuring fecal characteristic, daily fecal production, daily nitrogen and phosphorous excretion from grower-finisher pigs fed prevalent rations in Vietnam. Furthermore, equations for assessing the excretion were tested, which can be used in farm models for optimal recycling of manure while focusing on reducing pollution. The results indicated that fecal production and nutrient excretion were affected by the different rations tested. This study showed that five selected equations for predicting excretion from grower-finisher pigs in Danish conditions can also be used with precision in Vietnamese pig farming systems. The equations have been proven valid and can, therefore, be used as a much needed tool for assessing fecal production and nitrogen in excreta on pig farms. The study also showed that about 12% of nitrogen excreted was emitted during housing. Waste water contains more than half of the nitrogen excreted, mainly in ammonium form which has a high potential for gaseous emission.

  • Like other major river basin systems in the West of the United States the Platte River Basin are faced with the challenges of allocating more water for plant and animal species. A part of the Central Platte River was designated as critical habitat for the whooping crane in 1978. The water allocation system in the Platte River Basin is dominated by the Prior Appropriation Doctrine, which allocates water according to the priorities based on the date of water use. The Platte River Basin segregated into five subregions for purpose of analysis. 24 years of historic records of monthly flow and all the demands were complied. The simulation of river basin modeling includes physical operation of the system including water allocation by water rights and interstate compact agreements, reservoir operations, and diversion with consumptive use and return flow. MODSIM, a generalized river basin network model, was used for estimating the timing and magnitude of impacts on river flows and diversions associated with water transfers from each region. A total of 20 alternatives were considered, covering transfers from each of the five regions of basin with several options. The result shows that the timing and availability of augmented water at the critical habitat is not only a function of use by junior appropriators, but also of river losses, and timing of return flows.

  • Recently, efficient operation and practical management of power plants have become important issues in the nuclear industry. In particular, typical aging parameters such as stress and cumulative usage factor should be determined accurately for continued operation of a nuclear power plant beyond design life. However, most of the major components have been designed via conservative codes based on a 2-D concept, which do not take into account exact boundary conditions and asymmetric geometries. The present paper aims to suggest an effective fatigue evaluation methodology that uses a prototype of the integrated model and its transfer functions. The validity of the integrated 3-D Finite Element (FE) model was proven by comparing the analysis results of individual FE models. Also, mechanical and thermal transfer functions, known as Green's functions, were developed for the integrated model with the standard step input. Finally, the stresses estimated from the transfer functions were compared with those obtained from detailed 3-D FE analyses results at critical locations of the major components. The usefulness of the proposed fatigue evaluation methodology can be maximized by combining it with an on-line monitoring system, and this combination, will enhance the continued operations of old nuclear power plants.
