Since Kanda's paper on Korean scale insects in 1942, no work on scale insects has been done in Korea. The author has collected 8 species of scale insects in 5 green houses in Seoul and Suwon, of which 4 species, i.e., Chionaspis kentiae, Chrysomphalus aonidum, Planococcus kraunhiae and Aspidiotus hederae are new to Korea. Dominant species were Planococcus citri and Coccus hesperidum and common species to 4 green houses were Planococcus citri, Coccus hesperidum and Saissitia coffeae.
The family Pseudococcidae or mealybugs (Hemiptera) are common pests on ornamental plants and fruit trees in tropical regions of the world. Previously, the mealybug fauna of Cambodia and Laos comprised 22 species and 12 species, respectively. Recently, we collected 13 mealybug species in Cambodia and Laos. Among these, eight species were found in these countries for the first time: Phenacoccus solani (Ferris, 1918) and Rastrococcus iceryoides (Green, 1908) in Cambodia; Dysmicoccus neobrevipes (Beardsley, 1959) in both countries; Paracoccus invectus (Williams, 2004), Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley, 1898), Planococcus litchi (Cox, 1989), Planococcus minor (Maskell, 1897) and Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi (Gimpel & Miller, 1996) in Laos.

A novel Gram-positive, motile, non-spore forming aerobic marine bacterium, designated 107-1T was isolated from tidal mud collected in Gyehwa-do, South Korea. Cells of strain 107-1T were short rod or coccoid, oxidase negative, catalase positive and grew at 10-40℃ (with optimum growth at 25-30℃). It utilized menaquinones MK-7 and 8 as its respiratory quinones and its major fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0 (37.9%), iso-C16:0 (14.9%), and iso-C14:0 (10.8%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a distinct clade containing strain 107-1T and close species Planococcus ruber CW1T(98.52% sequence similarity), P. faecalis KCTC 33580T(97.67%), P. kocurii ATCC 43650T(97.48%), P. donghaensis DSM 22276T(97.47%), and P. halocryophilus DSM 24743T(97.37%). Strain 107-1T contains one circular chromosome (3,513,248bp in length) with G+C content of 44.6 mol%. Estimated ranges for genome to genome distance, average nucleotide identity, and average amino acid identity comparing strain 107-1T with close taxa were 20.3-34.8%, 77.9-86.9%, and 73.6-92.8%, respectively. Based on polyphasic analysis, strain 107-1T represents a novel species belonging to the genus Planococcus.
To enrich the genetic resource of microbial xylanases with high activity and stability under alkaline conditions, a xylanase gene (xynSL4) was cloned from Planococcus sp. SL4, an alkaline xylanase-producing strain isolated from the sediment of soda lake Dabusu. Deduced XynSL4 consists of a putative signal peptide of 29 residues and a catalytic domain (30-380 residues) of glycosyl hydrolase family 10, and shares the highest identity of 77% with a hypothetical protein from Planomicrobium glaciei CHR43. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that deduced XynSL4 is closely related with thermophilic and alkaline xylanases from Geobacillus and Bacillus species. The gene xynSL4 was expressed heterologously in Escherichia coli and the recombinant enzyme showed some superior properties. Purified recombinant XynSL4 (rXynSL4) was highly active and stable over the neutral and alkaline pH range from 6 to 11, with maximum activity at pH 7 and more than 60% activity at pH 11. It had an apparent temperature optimum of 70℃ and retained stable at this temperature in the presence of substrate. rXynSL4 was highly halotolerant, retaining more than 55% activity with 0.25-3.0 M NaCl and was stable at the concentration of NaCl up to 4M. The enzyme activity was significantly enhanced by β-mercaptoethanol and Ca2+ but strongly inhibited by heavy-metal ions and SDS. This thermophilic and alkaline- and salt-tolerant enzyme has great potential for basic research and industrial applications.

The efficacy of petroleum spray oil (PSO; D-C Tron $Plus^{(R)}$) against spirea aphid (Aphis citricola) and two scales (lcerya purchasi and Planococcus cryptus) on citrus was tested in Jeju, Korea. The control value of 0.33% PSO against spirea aphid was over 90% at 3 and 6 days after treatment (DAT), and then decreased to about 80% at 9 and 14 DAT. Spraying of PSO (0.33, 0.66, 1%) against cottony-cushion scale showed a much lower control value (less than 50%) during the investigation period compared to that of the conventional pesticide (Methion). When used against tile scale, Planococcus cryptus, the control value of 1% PSO was 95%, but that of 0.33% and 0.66% PSO only ranged from 50 to 80%, lower than the conventional pesticide. The results of this study, as with a previous study, suggest that spraying of 0.33% and 0.5% PSO not only controls the spirea aphid, but also reduces the density of two scales (lcerya purchasi and Planococcus cryptus) on citrus tree in Jeju, without phytotoxic damage.

Nineteen registered insecticides including 8 mixed formulations with buprofezin and 11 single formulations which is not including buprofezin were evaluated by spray application for their toxicity against adult and nymph of citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri. Five mixed formulations with buprofezin such as buprofezin 15EC+acetamiprid 4EC, buprofezin 10SC+clothianidin 3SC, buprofezin 20WP+dinotefuran 15WP, buprofezin 20SC+thiacloprid 5SC, and buprofezin 20SC+thiamethoxam 3.3SC showed high insecticidal activity (>93%) against nymph and adult of P. citri. Insecticidal activities of EPN 45EC, fenitrothion 50EC and methidathion 40EC in organophosphorous group showed 90 to 93% against nymph only. In addition to, insecticidal activities of acetamiprid 8WP, clothianidin 8SC, dinotefuran 20WG and thiamethoxam 10WG in neonicotinoids group showed above 90% against nymph only. In systemic and residual effect, five mixed formulations that was already proved to have high insecticidal activity showed low toxicity with below 60% against $3^{rd}$ instar nymph of P. citri in tomato and rose under greenhouse. Control efficacy of five mixed formulations with buprofezin was above 90%, 80% and 70% at 5 days after treatment (DAT), 10 DAT and 15 DAT, respectively.
The effects of electron beam irradiation on control of Myzus persicae and Planocococcus citri (Risso) were evaluated with the changes of mortality, emergence rate, fecundity, and egg hatchability. As a result of this study, M. persicae and P. citri (Risso) was not directly affected by electron beam irradiation with low doses (30, 60, 90, and 120 Gy) but the irradiation had effects on inhibition of development and reproduction of the pests.
This study investigated species, damage to fruits and population density of Pseudococcidae on pear in Naju, Chonnam province from 1990 to 1991. Three species, Planococcus kraunhiae, Pseudococcus comstocki and Crisicoccus matsumotoi, were identified. Of them P. kraunhiae was most abundant as 80.6%. Rate of fruit damages was greatest in var. Poongsoo as 39.7% but locations of field did not affect the rates. Degree of damages on Singo(late var.), Poongsoo (midseason var.) and Haengsoo(early var.) was 21.2, 18.2 and 13.3%, respectively. Population density of scales within paper bag of fruits began to increase from mid-June and showed the first at mid-July, the second at mid-August and third peak at early October. Rate of fruit damages was 48% at the first peak and 50.6% at 7 days after the second peak. Density increased from early October again but migration was not active presumably because of cold weather.

Scale insects heavily damaged many agricultural crops and trees in urban and forest areas. This study was conducted to carry out alternative control methods for environmentally friendly control of scale insects. Hot water extract of Quisquali indica produced high mortality against the black pine bast scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae in previously experiment. Methanol extract obtained from fruit of Q. indica was successively fractionated using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol and water which were examined by exposing for their insecticidal activity against four Cocoidea species (Eriococcus lagerstroemiae, Ceroplastes japonicus, Crisicoccus pini and Planococcus citri) in laboratory. Hexane fraction gave the highest insecticidal activity against scale insect pest. GC-mass analysis confirmed that the main compounds of Q. indica were alpha-pinene, methyl palmitate, eugenol, methyl myristate, phthalic acid mono(2-ethylhexyl)ester and palmitic acid. Among those compounds, ${\alpha}$-pinene was included 10 hexane subfractions. $LC_{50}$ of ${\alpha}$-pinene was 0.0114 ppm against 2nd instar of E. lagerstroemiae. These results suggest that Q. indica extracts might be used as an alternative control agent of scale insects.
A cultivation-based approach was employed to compare the culturable bacterial diversity associated with two phylogenetically closely related marine sponges, Spirastrella abata and Spirastrella panis, which have geologically overlapping distribution patterns. The bacteria associated with sponge were cultivated using MA medium supplemented with 3% sponge extracts. Community structures of the culturable bacteria of the two sponge species were analyzed with PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) based on 16S rDNA sequences. The RFLP fingerprinting of 16S rDNA digested with HaeIII and MspI, revealed 24 independent RFLP types, in which 1-5 representative strains from each type were partially sequenced. The sequence analysis showed >98.4% similarity to known bacterial species in public databases. Overall, the microbial populations of two sponges investigated were found to be the members of the classes; Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. The Alphaproteobacteria were predominant in the bacterial communities of the two sponges. Gammaproteobacteria represented 38.5% of bacterial community in S. abata. Whereas only 1.6% of this class was present in S. panis. Bacillus species were dominat in S. panis. Bacillus species were found to be 44.3% of bacterial species in S. panis, while they were only 9.7% in S. abata. It is interesting to note that Planococcus maritimus (8.1%, phylum Firmicutes) and Psychrobacter nivimaris (28.9%, phylum Gammaproteobacteria) were found only in S. abata. This result revealed that profiles of bacterial communities from the sponges with a close phylogenetic relationship were highly species-specific.
