  • The out-of-plane deformation in thin plate structure has been a serious qualify problem. It has been known that the out-of-plane deformation is caused by the angular deformation of welded joint. However, experimental results show that the conventional theory based on angular deformation is not appropriate for prediction of the out-of-plane deformation in thin plate structure. In this study, large deformation plate theory is introduced to clarify the effect of residual stress on the out-of-plane deformation. A simple equation is proposed to predict the out-of-plane deformation. The results by the proposed method show good agreement with the experimental results.

  • As shear localization is observed in different deformation modes, an attempt is made to understand the conditions for shear localization in general deformation modes. Most emphasis in put upon the effects of pre-localization deformation mode on the onset of shear localization and all the other well-recognized effects of subtle constitutive features and imperfection sensitivity studied elsewhere are not investigated here. Rather, an approximate perturbation stability analysis is performed for simplified isotropic rigid-plastic solids subjected to general mode of homogeneous deformation. Shear localization is possible in any deformation mode if the material has strain softening. The incipient rate of shear localization and shear plane orientations are strongly dependent upon the pre-localization deformation mode. Significant strain softening is necessary for shear localization in homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes while infinitesimal strain softening is necessary for shear localization in plane strain deformation mode. In any deformation mode, there are more than one shear plane orientation. Except for homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes, there are two possible shear plane orientations with respect to the principal directions of stretching. Some well-known examples are discussed in the light of the current analysis.

  • In thin plate welding, welding deformation is deformation is produced in special form like buckling distortion, which is different from one in thick plate welding, large quantitatively, and has complicated form. Therefore, a particular countermeasure to prevent the welding deformation in manufacturing process is requested. Otherwise it takes more time to straighten the welding deformation than to fabricated a steel structure newly and in case of failing to straighten the welding deformation in beginning of the flame straightening process, even if the flame straitening is completed, the appearances is not good and sometimes eve refabrication is needed. To minimize these problems. In this present paper, the effects of the condition of support pin on out-of plane deformation produced by thin plate Butt welding in investigated through experiment and the countermeasure to prevent the welding deformation in suggested.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is a common method for measuring out-of-plane deformation and in-plane deformation and applied for vibration analysis and strain/stress analysis. However, ESPI is sensitive to environmental disturbance, which provide the limitation of industrial application. On the other hand, Shearography based on shearing interferometer which is insensitive to vibration disturbance can directly measure the first derivative of out-of-plane deformation. In this paper a technique that extract out-of-plane deformation from results of shearography by numerical processing is proposed and measurement results of ESPI and Shearoraphy are compared quantitatively.

  • This paper presents a four-variable first-order shear deformation theory considering in-plane rotation of functionally graded plates. In recent studies, a simple first-order shear deformation theory was developed and extended to functionally graded plates. It has only four variables, separating the deflection into bending and shear parts, while the conventional first-order shear deformation theory has five variables. However, this simple first-order shear deformation theory only provides good predictions for simply supported plates since it does not consider in-plane rotation varying through the thickness of the plates. The present theory also has four variables, but considers the variation of in-plane rotation such that it is able to correctly predict the responses of the plates with any boundary conditions. Analytical solutions are obtained for rectangular plates with various boundary conditions. Comparative studies demonstrate the effects of in-plane rotation and the accuracy of the present theory in predicting the responses of functionally graded plates.

  • Welding of structure produces welding residual stresses which influence buckling strength, brittle fracture strength and cold crack on the weld parts. Therefore, it is very important to accurately analyze the residual stress before welding in order to guarantee the safety of weldment. If the weld length is long enough compared to the thickness and the breadth of plate, thermal and mechanical behaviors in the middle portion of the plate are assumed to be uniform along the thickness direction(z-axis). Thus, the following conditions(so-called plane deformation) can be assumed for the plate except near its end;1) distributions of stress and strain are independent on the z-axis;2) plane normal to z-axis before deformation remains plane during and after deformation. In this paper, plane-deformation thermal elasto-plastic problem is formulated by being based on the finite element method. Moreover special regards and paid to the fact that material properties in elastic and plastic region are temperature-dependence. And the method to solve the plane-deformation thermal elasto-plastic problem is shown by using the incremental technique. From the results of analysis, the characterisics of distribution of welding residual stress and plastic strain with the production mechanism are clarified.

  • When ship blocks are erected or pre-erected, most blocks will be at outdoors where they are not protected from weather and exposed to ray of the sun. A deck plate compared to those in radiation heat transfer from the sun will have higher temperature than it of ambient air, and will expand more than lower laying structures whose temperatures are similar with air. But deck plates and under-structures are connected, so the deck plate will be under out-of-plane deformation rather than expand in length. In this study, we considered the temperature difference between air and plate as a major parameter of out-of-plane deformation, and analyzed how much additional deformation would take place. In addition, when a deformation could take place was also analyzed based on the initial deformed shape of deck plate. Because the accuracy inspections of deck plate will be done during daytime, conventional accuracy check results on sunny day could make us feel unfair. Thus resonable datum about momentary additional out-of-plane deformation due to environmental effects have been determined. The real deformation values can be specified even under enlarged deformations by radiation-expansion.

  • A Green's function approach is adopted for analyzing the thermoelastic deformation and stress analysis of a plate made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). The solution to the 3-dimensional steady temperature is obtained by using the laminate theory. The fundamental equations for thermoelastic problems are derived in terms of out-plane deformation and in-plane force, separately. The thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions due to the bending and in-plane forces are analyzed by using a Green’Às function based on the Galerkin method. The eigenfunctions of the Galerkin Green's function for the thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions are approximated in terms of a series of admissible functions that satisfy the homogeneous boundary conditions of the rectangular plate. Numerical examples are carried out and effects of material properties on thermoelastic behaviors are discussed.

  • This presentation examines the characteristics of torsional vibration in axisymmetric out-of-plane vibrations of an annular Mindin plate. The out-of-plane vibration of circular or annular plates have been investigated since a long years ago by many researchers. When the classical Kirchhoff plate theory neglecting the effect of transverse shear deformation is applied to a thick plate, its out-of-plane natural frequencies are much different from reality. And so, since Minlin presented a plate theory considering the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation, many researches for the out-of-plane natural vibration of circular or annular Mindin plates have been performed. But almost all researchers missed the torsional vibration due to transverse shear deformation in axisymmetric out-of-plane vibrations of the circular or annular Mindin plate. Therefore, in this presentation, we verify the existence of torsional vibration of an annular plate and present the natural frequencies of an annular plate with free outer boundary surface.
