This paper uses a piecewise ratonal cubic interpolant to solve the problem of shape preserving interpolation for plane curves; scalar curves are also considered as a special case. The results derived here are actually the extensions of the convexity preserving results of Delbourgo and Gregory [Delbourgo and Gregory'85] who developed a $C^{1}$ shape preserving interpolation scheme for scalar curves using the same piecewise rational function. They derived the ocnstraints, on the shape parameters occuring in the rational function under discussion, to make the interpolant preserve the convex shape of the data. This paper begins with some preliminaries about the rational cubic interpolant. The constraints consistent with convex data, are derived in Sections 3. These constraints are dependent on the tangent vectors. The description of the tangent vectors, which are consistent and dependent on the given data, is made in Section 4. the convexity preserving results are explained with examples in Section 5.

In the present work, planar-type ZnO powder of [0001] plane with a high aspect ratio range of 20:1 to 50:1 was synthesized. Ag or CuO could be coated on the planar-type ZnO powder by wet methods such as centrifugation or ball milling. During the coating, the average size of the powder was slightly increased while maintaining the shape and XRD pattern of ZnO. When Ag or CuO was coated, the absolute value of the zeta potential, as well as the concentration of oxygen vacancy, was increased. Ag or CuO coated planar-type ZnO power exhibited excellent antibacterial performance, which seems to be related to their high electrostatic attraction force. They could be made into a masterbatch by mixing with ABS resin, and their applicability to antibacterial substances was confirmed by manufacturing the caps of a keyboard.

Currently used heating elements are metal and non-metal heating elements, including various types of heaters, and resistance line heating elements have a problem of decreasing thermal efficiency over time, so to solve this problem, a planar heating element using high-purity carbon materials and oxidation-resistant inorganic compounds was applied. Through the manufacture of planar heating elements using CNT, ruthenium composite materials, and ruthenium oxide, physicochemical performance and capacity were increased, and instantaneous responsiveness was increased. Through thick film technology applicable to various base bodies, fine patterns were formed by the screening method in consideration of the fact that the performance of the heat source depends on the viscosity and pattern shape. The heating element was manufactured by thick film printing technology by mixing ruthenium oxide, CNT, Ag, etc. The characteristics of each paste were analyzed through viscosity measurement, and STS 430 was used as a base. Surface temperature and efficiency were measured by testing heaters manufactured for small wind tunnels and real-vehicle experiments. The surface temperature decreased as the air volume increased, and the optimal system boundary was found to be about 200 mm. Among the currently used heating elements, this paper manufactured a planar heating element using thick film technology to find out the relationship between air volume and temperature, and to study the surface temperature.

Numerical analysis which is based on finite element techniques, implicit Euler method and frontal solving algorithm was performed to study the effects of the crucible shape on the temperature of sapphire crystal and the shape of the melt/crystal interface in heat exchanger method. The computer simulation described here and effective to solving the heat transport phenomena with the transition of the interface shape from hemispherical to planar. In the work, various crucibles with differently shaped corners at their bottom are considered to improve the deflection of the melt/crystal interface. The shape of the crucible should be considered as one of the variables for the process optimization.

This paper presents the design of a novel small and wide band planar inverted F-antenna which simultaneously covers GSM900/GPS/DCS1800/DCS1900/DMB service. The proposed antenna consisting of a main patch with rectangular slit, strip 1 and strip 2, occupied the total volume of.$15\times36\times6mm^3$. A very wide impedance bandwidth characteristic was achieved by optimizing both the distance between the feed line and short strip and the length of rectangular slit on the main patch. The commercial electromagnetic software, CST Microwave Studio, is used to design the structure. The maximum gains at the frequencies of 900, 1575, 1800, 1900, and 2600 MHz were 2.07, 1.07, 1.69 and 0.55, -1.99 dBi, respectively. The overall shape of the radiation patterns is suitable for mobile communication application.

This paper focuses on the vibration analysis of planar cable-driven parallel robots on their configurations. Despite of many advantages of the cable robots, elasticity of the cables may cause the vibration at the existence of external disturbance, resulting in deterioration of positioning accuracy. According to the vibration theory, having high first order natural frequency can prevent resonance with low frequency disturbance from the surrounding environment. A series of simulations showed that choosing frame / end-effector shape and cable connection method affects robots' natural frequency. For the precise simulation, the cables are modeled as linear springs and axial vibration of cables is mainly considered. Aspect ratios of the frame and end-effector are defined as non-dimensional parameters while their areas are fixed. It was shown that vibration analysis guides to design a planar cable robot in terms of high capacity to reduce vibration.

Identifying algae in water is important for managing algal blooms which have great impact on drinking water supply systems. There have been various microscopic approaches developed for algae classification. Many of them are based on the morphological features of algae. However, there have seldom been mathematical frameworks for comparing the shape of algae, represented as a planar continuous curve obtained from an image. In this work, we describe a recent framework for computing shape distance between two different algae based on the elastic metric and a novel functional representation called the square root velocity function (SRVF). We further introduce statistical procedures for multiple shapes of algae including computing the sample mean, the sample covariance, and performing the principal component analysis (PCA). Based on the shape distance, we classify six algal species in watersheds experiencing algal blooms, including three cyanobacteria (Microcystis, Oscillatoria, and Anabaena), two diatoms (Fragilaria and Synedra), and one green algae (Pediastrum). We provide and compare the classification performance of various distance-based and model-based methods. We additionally compare elastic shape distance to non-elastic distance using the nearest neighbor classifiers.
Stress intensity factors for a planar crack parallel to a bimaterial interface are considered. The formulation leads to a system of hypersingular integral equations whose unknowns are three modes of crack opening displacements. In the numerical analysis, the unknown displacement discontinuities are approximated by the products of the fundamental density functions and polynomials. The numerical results show that the present method yields smooth variations of stress intensity factors along the crack front accurately. The mixed mode stress intensity factors are indicated in tables and figures with varying the shape of crack, distance from the interface, and elastic constants. It is found that the maximum stress intensity factors normalized by root area are always insensitive to the crack aspect ratio. They are given in a form of formula useful for engineering applications.
The paper is concerned with an improved scheme for application of the blank holding force in order to take account of the thickness distribution in the sheet material of the flange region. The scheme incorporates with a modified membrane finite element method for planar anisotropic materials. The new scheme proposed two coefficients α and βto calculate the compressive stress in the sheet metal due to the blank holding force, which should be determined properly for accurate analysis. The effect of αand βon the blank holding force distribution and the deformed shape is investigated with simulation of rectangular cup deep drawing processes by changing parameter values.

Surfaces of many engineering structures, especially, those of ships are commonly made out of either single- or double-curved surfaces to meet functional requirements. The first step in the fabrication process of a three-dimensional design surface is unfolding or flattening the surface, otherwise known as planar development, so that manufacturers can determine the initial flat plate which is required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both single- and double-curved surfaces, is established by minimizing the strain energy of deformation from its planar development to the design surface. The unfolding process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, based on the deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to the characteristics of the fabrication method. And the design surface, or the curved shell plate is subdivided by automatic mesh generation.
