The homoepitaxy of Si(5 5 12) at $495^{\circ}C$ has been studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy under ultrahigh vacuum. A Si-dimer is the basic building-block and preferentially adsorbs on a unique site, that is, the Si-dimer/adatom site at the (337) and the (225) subsections within the Si(5 5 12) unit cell. The Si(5 5 12) unit cell is faceted to $3\times(337)$ subsections filled with Si-addimers and $1\times(113)$ subsection. In this step the tetramer at the other (337) section within the unit cell is transformed to a dimer/adatom site which can accept Si-dimers. Each (337) section is faceted to $1\times(112)\;and\;1\times(113)$, and then finally the unit cell of Si(5 5 12) is faceted to $3\tiems(112)\;and\;4\times(113)$ and forms the facet of effective height, $2.34{\AA}$. In this step, mutual transformation between the honeycomb chain and the dimer/adatom occurs. Finally, the valley between (112) and (113) facets is filled. If once the last step is completed, the uniform and planar Si(5 5 12) terrace is recovered. From the present study, therefore, it can be concluded that the homoepitaxy on Si(5 5 12) is periodically achieved and such growth mode is quite unique since faceting of the substrate-unit-cell plays a critical role for controlling uniformity of the overlayer.
We fabricated a buried-ridge waveguide laser diode (B-RWG LD) which has more advantages for obtaining lateral single mode operation on the same ridge width and for the planarization of the device surface, compared to the conventional RWG LD. In this LD, the difference of the lateral effective refractive index can be controlled by the thickness of the InGaAsP layer which is grown on the active and the p-InP layers. The InGaAsP multiple quantum well was grown on a n-InP substrate by the CBE. The buried ridge structure was formed by selective wet etchings, followed by liquid phase epitaxy methods. The fabricated LD with the ridge width of 7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed a linear increase of the optical power up to 20 ㎽ without any kinks and a saturated output power of more than 80 ㎽. By measuring the far field pattern, we demonstrate that LDs with the ridge widths of 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were operated in a lateral single mode up to 2.7I$_{th}$ and 2.4I$_{th}$, respectively.ely.

In this paper, a new radiating structure with a multi-layered two-dimensional metallic disk array was proposed for shaping the flat-topped element pattern. It is an infinite periodic planar array structure with metallic disks finitely stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures. The theoretical analysis was in detail performed using rigid full-wave analysis, and was based on modal representations for the fields in the partial regions of the array structure and for the currents on the metallic disks. The final system of linear algebraic equations was derived using the orthogonal property of vector wave functions, mode-matching method, boundary conditions and Galerkin's method, and also their unknown modal coefficients needed for calculation of the array characteristics were determined by Gauss elimination method. The application of the algorithm was demonstrated in an array design for shaping the flat-topped element patterns of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$ beam width in Ka-band. The optimal design parameters normalized by a wavelength for general applications are presented, which are obtained through optimization process on the basis of simulation and design experience. A Ka-band experimental breadboard with symmetric nineteen elements was fabricated to compare simulation results with experimental results. The metallic disks array structure stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures was realized using ion-beam deposition method on thin polymer films. It was shown that the calculated and measured element patterns of the breadboard were in very close agreement within the beam scanning range. The result analysis for side lobe and grating lobe was done, and also a blindness phenomenon was discussed, which may cause by multi-layered metallic disk structure at the broadside. Input VSWR of the breadboard was less than 1.14, and its gains measured at 29.0 GHz. 29.5 GHz and 30 GHz were 10.2 dB, 10.0 dB and 10.7 dB, respectively. The experimental and simulation results showed that the proposed multi-layered metallic disk array structure could shape the efficient flat-topped element pattern.
Two orthogonal joint sets develop well only in sandstone beds in the sandstone-mudstone sequences of Gumi and Dasa outcrops within Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin. And various joint data are similar in the beds of the same thickness in both outcrops, meaning that the joint sets were homogeneously produced by extensional deformation in the same regional stress field. Most of joints in the sandstone beds are orthogonal to, and confined by bed boundaries, which are believed to be formed by hydrofracturing during consolidation after burial. Two orthogonal joint sets are considered to be almost coeval on the basis of mutual abutting relationship which makes up fracture grid-lock and a product of rapid switching of ${\sigma}_2$ and ${\sigma}_3$ axes with constant ${\sigma}_1$ direction oriented to vertical. The joint sets in the sandstone beds show planar surfaces, parallel orientations and regular spacing, with joint spacing linearly proportional to bed thickness. The spacing distributions of the joints seem to correspond to log-normal to almost normal distribution in most of the beds. But multilayer joints do not display regular spacing and dominant size. Either joint set in this study is characterized by a high level of joint density and a saturated spacing distribution as indicated by the mode/mean ratio values and the Cv(coefficient of variance) values. Joint aperture tends to increase with the vertical length of the joints controlled by bed thickness.
We have fabricated $∂^2$$B_{z}$ /$∂x^2$ type planar gradiometers and studied their properties in operation under various field conditions. $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$ film was deposited on $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrate by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system and patterned into a device by the photolithography with ion milling technique. The device consists of 3 pickup loops designed symmetrically Inner dimension and the width of the square side loops are 3.6 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively, and the corresponding dimensions of the center loop are 2.0 mm and 1.13 mm. The length of baseline gradiometer is 5.8 mm. Step-edge junction width is 3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the hole size of the SQUID loop is 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 52 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The SQUID inductance is estimated to be 35 pH. The device was formed on a 20 mm ${\times}$ 10 mm substrate. We have tested the behavior of the device in various field conditions. The unshielded gradiometer was stable under extremely hostile conditions on a laboratory bench. Noise level 0.45 pT/$\textrm{cm}^2$/(equation omitted)Hz and 0.84 pT/$\textrm{cm}^2$/(equation omitted)Hz at 1 Hz for the shielded and the unshielded cases, which correspond to equivalent field noises of 150 fT/(equation omitted)Hz and 280 fT/(equation omitted)Hz, respectively. In spite of the short baseline of 5.8 mm, the high common-mode-rejection-ratio of the gradiometer, $10^3$, allowed us to successfully record magnetocardiogram of a human subject, which demonstrates the feasibility of the design in biomagnetic studies.

This paper describes the clinical use of the dose verification of multileaf collimator (MLC)-based CyberKnife plans by combining the Octavius 1000SRS detector and water-equivalent RW3 slab phantom. The slab phantom consists of 14 plates, each with a thickness of 10 mm. One plate was modified to support tracking by inserting 14 custom-made fiducials on surface holes positioned at the outer region of $10{\times}10cm^2$. The fiducial-inserted plate was placed on the 1000SRS detector and three plates were additionally stacked up to build the reference depth. Below the detector, 10 plates were placed to avoid longer delivery times caused by proximity detection program alerts. The cross-calibration factor prior to phantom delivery was obtained by performing with 200 monitor units (MU) on the field size of $95{\times}92.5mm^2$. After irradiation, the measured dose distribution of the coronal plane was compared with the dose distribution calculated by the MultiPlan treatment planning system. The results were assessed by comparing the absolute dose at the center point of 1000SRS and the 3-D Gamma (${\gamma}$) index using 220 patient-specific quality assurance (QA). The discrepancy between measured and calculated doses at the center point of 1000SRS detector ranged from -3.9% to 8.2%. In the dosimetric comparison using 3-D ${\gamma}$-function (3%/3 mm criteria), the mean passing rates with ${\gamma}$-parameter ${\leq}1$ were $97.4%{\pm}2.4%$. The combination of the 1000SRS detector and RW3 slab phantom can be utilized for dosimetry validation of patient-specific QA in the CyberKnife MLC system, which made it possible to measure absolute dose distributions regardless of tracking mode.
An echo planar imaging (EPI)-based spin-echo sequence Is often used to obtain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data on most of the clinical MRI systems, However, this sequence is confounded with the susceptibility artifacts, especially on the temporal lobe in the human brain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to design a pulse sequence that relatively immunizes the susceptibility artifacts, but can map diffusion tensor components in a single-shot mode. A multi-slice multi-echo pulsed-gradient spin-echo (MePGSE) sequence with eight echoes wasdeveloped with selective refocusing pulses for all slices to map the full tensor. The first seven echoes in the train were diffusion-weighted allowing for the observation of diffusion in several different directions in a single experiment and the last echo was for crusher of the residual magnetization. All components of diffusion tensor were measured by a single shot experiment. The sequence was applied in diffusive phantoms. The preliminary experimental verification of the sequence was illustrated by measuring the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for tap water and by measuring diffusion tensor components for watermelon. The ADC values in the series of the water phantom were reliable. The MePGSE sequence, therefore, may be useful in human brain studies.
An ab initio molecular orbital method has been applied to investigation of molecular properties and equilibrium geometries for hexahydroxybenzene triscarbonate (C9O9) and its analogous cyclic compounds (C9S9, C9O6S3, C9O3S6). In these works, the optimized geometry of each compound has been obtained at HF and MP2 levels. These results have shown that the optimized geometries of these compounds prefer D3h planar structure to C3v bowl structure. Calculations of harmonic vibrational frequencies have been also carried out at HF/3-21G* level to analyze normal modes of these compounds. Bonding characters of these compounds are studied by Mulliken and natural populations obtained at HF/6-31G* level. We have also studied the structures and the populations of C6O6 and C6S6 at HF and MP2 levels which are obtained by pyrolyses of C9O9 and analogous compounds. In addition, the single point calculations have been performed to predict the approximate energy barrier for pyrolysis of each compound.
Conventional microgyroscopes of vibrating type require resonant frequency tuning of the driving and sensing modes to achieve high sensitivity. These tuning conditions depend on each fabricated microgyroscopes, even though the microgyroscopes are identically designed. A new micromachined resonator, which is applicable to microgyroscopes with self-toning characteristics, is presented. Since the laterally driven two degrees of freedom (2DOF) resonator was designed as a symmetric structure with identical stiffness in two orthogonal axes, the resonator is applicable to vibrating microgyroscopes, which do not need mode tuning. A dynamic model of the resonator was derived considering gyroscopic application. The dynamic model was evaluated by experimental comparison with fabricated resonators. The microgyroscopes were fabricated using a simple 2-mask-process of a single polysilicon layer deposited on an insulator layer. The feasibility of the resonator as a vibrating microgyroscopes with self-tuning capability is discussed. The fabricated resonators of a particular design have process-induced non-uniformities that cause different resonant frequencies. For several resonators, the standard deviations of the driving and sensing frequencies were as high as 1232Hz and 1214Hz, whereas the experimental average detuning frequency was 91.75Hz. The minimum detuned frequency was 68Hz with $0.034mVsec/^{\circ}$ sensitivity. The sensitivity of the microgyroscopes was low due to process-induced non-uniformity; the angular rate bandwidth, however, was wide. This resonator could be successfully applicable to a vibrating microgyroscopes with high sensitivity, if improvements in uniformity of the fabrication process are achieved. Further developments in improved integrated circuits are expected to lower the noise level even more.
