  • In this investigation, 480 high school students attending school in Seoul, Incheon were surveyed for their knowledge of seaweed and their preference of seaweed products provided during school meal service. Female students answered that they preferred seaweed more than male students. When asked to explain their preference for seaweed, most students who preferred seaweed responded 'it is tasty' (82.9%), while those that did not like seaweed responded 'I don't like the texture when chewing it and it is not tasty' (47.8%). Most students reported that they usually eat 'laver', and the number of times that they at seaweed was '3-4 times a week'. The primary place in which they ate seaweed and the place where they feel it had the best taste was a 'house'. The primary source of information regarding seaweed was mass media including TV, newspapers, magazines and the internet (48.8%). With regard to seaweed in school meals, which is offered twice a week, most students reported, 'I eat seaweed and leave it to some extent.' They perceived 'laver' to be most often provided in school meals, and 57.7% reported that their favorite seaweed meal was 'laver'. When asked why they dislike seaweed in school meals, the most common responses were 'I didn't like seaweed the first time I tried it' (27%) and 'Its taste is different from what I eat at home' (24.6%). The most common request regarding seaweed provided in school lunches was for the taste to be improved (48.2%). Evaluation of the preference for seaweed menus in school meals revealed that both males and females had higher preferences of more than 4 points for 'fried laver' and 'broiled laver'.

  • In this paper, we propose a user-dependent mid-point navigation system using a time weighted mid-point navigation algorithm and a user preference based mid-point neighborhood recommendation system. The proposed system consists of a mid-point navigation module for calculating an mid-point by applying a time weight of each user based on a departure point between users, and a search module for providing a search for a route to the calculated mid-point. In addition, based on the mid-point search result, it is possible to increase the utilization rate of users by including a place recommending function based on user's preference. Experimental results show that the proposed system can increase the efficiency of using by the user-dependent mid-point navigation and place recommendation function.

  • This study did an empirical analysis using consumer survey data to determine whether Taiwanese consumers' preference for the Korean Wave affects their preference for Korean dried persimmons. There were 158 effective respondents used for the analysis, and the effects of the Korean Wave was estimated using ordered logit regression. The main results of this study were as follows. First, females more preferred Korean dried persimmons compared to men. Second, it was found that the housewife variable had a statistically significant positive effect at a significance level of 1% indicating that the degree of preference for Korean dried persimmons was higher compared to other occupations. Third, when the main place for purchasing dried persimmons was a department store or a large discount store, the analysis result showed a positive effect at a significance level of 1%. Finally, the Korean wave effect was found to have a statistically significant positive influence at a 1% significance level. In particular, it is worth noting that as the Taiwanese consumers' preference for the Korean Wave increased, the preference for Korean dried persimmons increased, which could be useful information for companies wishing to export Korean dried persimmon products to Taiwan. As a promotional plan for revitalizing Korean dried persimmons in Taiwan, conducting promotional events in conjunction with the Korean Wave, such as K-pop contests, and promoting persimmons that reflect Korean traditional culture should be considered.

  • Nicotine addiction is a worldwide problem. However, previous studies characterizing the rewarding and reinforcing effects of nicotine in animal models have reported inconsistent findings. It was observed that the addictive effects are variable on different factors (e.g. route, dose, and age). Here, we evaluated the rewarding and reinforcing effects of nicotine in different routes of administration, across a wide dose range, and in different age groups. Two of the most widely used animal models of drug addiction were employed: the conditioned place preference (CPP) and self-administration (SA) tests. Nicotine CPP was evaluated in different routes [intraperitoneal (i.p.) and subcutaneous (s.c.)], doses (0.05 to 1.0 mg/kg) and age [adolescent and adult rats]. Similarly, intravenous nicotine SA was assessed in different doses (0.01 to 0.06 mg/kg/infusion) and age (adolescent and adult rats). In the CPP test, s.c. nicotine produced greater response than i.p. The 0.2 mg/kg dose produced highest CPP response in adolescent, while 0.6 mg/kg in adult rats; which were also confirmed in 7 days pretreated rats. In the SA test, adolescent rats readily self-administer 0.03 mg/kg/infusion of nicotine. Doses that produced nicotine CPP and SA induced blood nicotine levels that corresponded well with human smokers. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that nicotine produces reliable CPP [0.2 mg/kg dose (s.c.)] in adolescents and [0.6 mg/kg dose (s.c.)] in adults, and SA [0.03 mg/kg/infusion] in adolescent rats. Both tests indicate that adolescent rats are more sensitive to the rewarding and reinforcing effects of nicotine.

  • Although lisdexamfetamine is used as a recreational drug, little research exists regarding its potential for dependence or its precise mechanisms of action. This study aims to evaluate the psychoactivity and dependence profile of lisdexamfetamine using conditioned place preference and self-administration paradigms in rodents. Additionally, biochemical techniques are used to assess alterations in the dopamine levels in striatal synaptosomes following administration of lisdexamfetamine. Lisdexamfetamine increased both conditioned place preference and self-administration. Moreover, after administration of the lisdexamfetamine, dopamine levels in the striatal synaptosomes were significantly increased. Although some modifications should be made to the analytical methods, performing high performance liquid chromatography studies on synaptosomes can aid in predicting dependence liability when studying new psychoactive substances in the future. Collectively, lisdexamfetamine has potential for dependence possible via dopaminergic pathway.

  • Propofol is an anesthetic commonly used to provide sedation or to induce and maintain an anesthetic stated. However, there are reports which indicate propofol may cause psychological dependence or be abused. In the present study, we used various behavioral tests including climbing test, jumping test, conditioned place preference, and self-administration test to assess the dependence potential and abuse liability of propofol compared to a positive control (methamphetamine) or a negative control (saline or intralipid). Among the tests, the conditioned place preference test was conducted with a biased method, and the selfadministration test was performed under a fixed ratio (FR) 1 schedule, 1 h per session. No difference was found in the climbing test and jumping test, but propofol (30 mg/kg, i.p.) increased the rewarding effect in the conditioned place preference test, and it showed a positive reinforcing effect compared to the vehicle. These results indicate that propofol tends to show psychological dependence rather than physical dependence, and it seems not to be related with dopaminergic system.

  • This study aimed to research theoretical reviews of streetscape and to analysis the correlation between visual properties and preference of streetscape in Bukchon around Gahoe-dong which is a dense Hanok area. Therefore we analyzed a relation between visual quantities and preference intended Samcheong-dong 35 street, Gahoe-dong 31 street and Gahoe-dong 11 street the representative streetscape in Bukchon. Also we extracted common factors of images of the streetscape in Bukchon and figured out a relation between the visual image evaluation and the preference by regression analysis. The result of the analysis is as follows. First, it was the streetscape of Gahoe-dong 31 street which get more scores than any other streetscape in preference. And we figured out that the higher the ceiling and the visual quantities of planting the more preference. Second, streetscape in Bukchon was explained by 'aesthetics', 'amenity' and 'orderliness' in psychological view. And there was noticeable difference in aesthetics aspect between Gahoe-dong 31 street the highest preferred place and the Samcheong-dong 35 street the lowest preferred place. Third, as a result of regression analysis on preference and factor scores about psychological variables, we figured out that the factor which explains aesthetics effects most on the preference.
