  • For the purpose of searching for the new antifungal agent from the plant origin, we have examined twenty seven species of medicinal plants for the antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Pityrosporum ovale. The whole MeOH extract of each plant material and the n-hexane and EtOAc fractions were evaluated individually for the antifungal activity. Among the test materials, the fractions from the root bark of Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Zanthoxylum piperitum and Citrus unshiu showed significant antifungal activities in a dose dependent manner against Pityrosporum ovale and Candida albicans, respectively.

  • Meanwhile Pityrosporum species as well as Candida species in yeast phase are not pathogenic, Pityrosporum in mycelial phase is pathogenic. Pityrosporum species can be isolated not only from tinea versicolor patients but also from ninety (90) percent of healthy persons. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ketoconazole against Pityrosporum spp. was 0.05~0.8$\mu\textrm{g}$ ml$^{-1}$and the MIC of ketoconazole was the lowest. Of itraconazole, selenium sulfide, sodium thiosulfate and ketoconazole had the lowest MIC against P. orbiculare. The P. orbiculare strains isolated from healthy persons were inhibited by lower MIC than those isolated from tinea versicolor patients. P. ovale strains were inhibited by lower MIC at MIC$_{50}$ and MIC$_{90}$ of oral and topical antifungal agents than p. orbiculare.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Grateloupia elliptica, a seaweed native to Jeju Island, Korea, on the prevention of hair loss. When immortalized rat vibrissa dermal papilla cells were treated with extract of G. elliptica, the proliferation of dermal papilla cells significantly increased. In addition, the G. elliptica extract significantly inhibited the activity of $5{\alpha}$-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a main cause of androgenetic alopecia. On the other hand, the G. elliptica extract promoted $PGE_2$ production in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner. The G. elliptica extract exhibited particularly high inhibitory effect on LPS-stimulated IL-12, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. The G. elliptica extract also showed inhibitory activity against Pityrosporum ovale, a main cause of dandruff. These results suggest that G. elliptica extract has the potential to treat alopecia via the proliferation of dermal papilla, $5{\alpha}$-reductase inhibition, increase of $PGE_2$ production, decrease of LPS-stimulated pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibitory activity against Pityrosporum ovale.

  • Background : Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition characterized by scaling. The common causative agent is now accepted to be the lipophilic Pityrosporum ovale. Obstecive : We conducted a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study to investigate the efficacy of Herbal Shampoo & Essense and placebo in patients with mild to moderate dandruff. Mathods : Forth-seven patients with dandruff were assigned to one of two treatment goups: Test (contaning the medication) or control (vehicle). After administering through randomizion, two groups were used with Negative sampoo for first two weeks, and used with test or control products for second two weeks. Results : 1. After 2 weeks of treatment, the numbers of P. ovale in test groups were decreased in a statistically meaningful way(p<0.01) compared with control groups. 2. After 2 weeks of treatment, average of sebum-amount in test groups were decreased from 117.55 to 92.88, in a statistically meaningful way(P<0.05, paired t-test) compared with control groups that were decreased from 115.53 to 112.46. 3. In clinical score, average of control groups is decreased from 2.82 to 1.09. on the other sides, average of test groups is decreased from 3.88 to 2.44. The change of test groups is bigger than that of control groups, both two groups was decreased in a statistically way(<0.01) Conclusion : The study demonstrated that Herbal Shampoo & Essense can be used by patients with scalf safely and effectively with almost no side-effect.

  • Antimicrogbial activity of Veratrum alkaloids against Pityrosporum ovale. Trichopyton mentagrophytes, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investgated. Of the alkaloids tested, only jervaeratrum alkaloids exhibited antimicrobial activity. The most basic structural requirement for activity of jerveratrum alkaloids is mainly due to the introduction of an oxygen in ring C regardless of the difference in structural types. Glucoside is more active than alkamine, suggesting the assistance in the trasport processes.

  • This study investigated the Antimicrobial activity of Rutaceae fruit ethanol extracts against microorganisms-induced skin inflammation in cosmetic materials. Rutaceae fruits were separated in two parts of whole fruit (pulp, pulp fegment membrane, peel) and peel, and extracted with 70% ehtanol. The results demonstrated that Rutaceae fruit ethanol extracts showed antimicrobial activity in 5 strains except Staphylococcus aureus. In particular, the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis was the best in fresh lemons whole fruit. The antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli was shown only in fresh lemon peel and fresh trifoliate peel. Additionally, antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes was shown only in the dried lemon peel. In the results of antimicrobial activity against Pityrosporum ovale, in the case of fresh fruits, citron whole fruits showed the highest effect, followed by lemon whole fruits and mandarin orange peel. And in the case of dried fruits, orange peel showed the highest effect, followed by trifoliate peel, mandarin orange peel and lemon peel. Therefore, it is considered that lemon, which shows antimicrobial activity against all skin inflammation-causing microorganisms, can be used as a natural material for improving skin inflammation in cosmetics.
