  • In this investigation, the electrochemical characteristics of superaustenitic and general austenitic stainless steels were compared by conducting potentiodynamic polarization experiment with varying temperatures in natural seawater solution. From the result of the potentiodynamic polarization experiment, the corrosion rate of UNS S31603 was found to be 17 times faster than that of UNS N08367 under the most severe corrosion conditions. The relationship between the corrosion rate by maximum damage depth and the corrosion rate by the corrosion current density was expressed as α value for each stainless steel. The α value of UNS S31603 under all temperature conditions was higher than that of UNS N08367 under similar conditions. This means that UNS S31603 is more prone to localized corrosion than UNS N08367. UNS S31603 expressed pitting type damages under all temperature conditions as shown by SEM analysis results. The pitting damage rapidly grew at the relatively poor grain boundaries. Damage on UNS N08367 was not clearly represented at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃, and slight intergranular corrosion damage was observed on the entire surface at 90 ℃.

  • Interest in electric vehicle is on the rise due to global eco-friendly policies. To improve the efficiency of electric vehicles, it is essential to reduce weights of components. Since electric vehicles have various electronic equipment, the research on stray current corrosion is required. In this research, a galvanostatic corrosion experiment was performed on 6061-T6 Al alloy for electric vehicle battery housing using chloride concentration and applied current density as variables in a solution simulating an acid rain environment. As a result of the experiment, when chloride concentration and applied current density were increased, corrosion damage became larger. In particular, pitting damage was dominant at an applied current density of 0.1 mA/cm2. Pitting damage over the entire surface was found at a current density of 1.0 mA/cm2. In conclusion, chloride concentration had a relatively large effect on localized corrosion. The applied current density had a great effect on uniform corrosion. However, in the case of applied current density, localized corrosion was also greatly affected by interaction with chloride.

  • The fundamental experiments on the phosphorus removal from water were carried out by the batch and continuous reactors which used aluminium and copper plate. In this systems, the phosphorus was removed by aluminium ion generated with the electrochemical interaction (pitting corrosion) of aluminium and copper. In the batch experiments, the efficiencies of phosphorus removal increased when the surfaces of aluminium and copper plate were brushed. The phosphorus removal by aluminium ion was affected the copper plate and NaCI in this system. The optimal pH values were 5 and 6 for the phosphorus removal. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increased with increasing NaCI concentration, surface area of aluminium and copper plate. The $CUSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ instead of copper plate could be used as Cu source. The effluent $PO_4-P$ concentration as low as 2 $mg/{\ell}$ could have been obtained during the continuous experiment at HRT of 48 hrs.

  • This study investigated the corrosion protection by electrodeposited copper layer on AZ31 Mg alloy with and without additional silver layer by immersion test, salt spray test, OCP transient and potentiodynamic polarization experiment. The single electrodeposited Cu layer on AZ31 Mg alloy showed a nodular structure with many imperfections of crevices between the nodules, which resulted in the fast initiation of pitting corrosion within first few hours of immersion. Double-layer coating of Cu and outer Ag layer slightly increased the initiation time for pitting corrosion. Triple-layer coatings of Cu/Ag/Cu exhibited the most efficient corrosion protection of AZ31 Mg alloy, compared to the single- and double-layer coatings. Surface morphology of the outer Cu layer in the triple-layer was changed from the nodular structure to fine particle structure with no crevices due to the presence of an additional Ag layer. Thus, the improved corrosion resistance of AZ31 Mg alloy by electrodeposited Cu/Ag or Cu/Ag/Cu layers is readily ascribed to the decreased number of imperfections in the electrodeposited layers due to the additional silver layer. It is concluded that the additional silver layer provides many nucleation sites for the second Cu plating, resulting in the formation of finer and denser structure than the first Cu electrodeposit.

  • The corrosion behavior of stainless steel (304 and 316 type) and copper induced by LiCl-KCl at low temperatures in the presence of sufficient oxygen and moisture was investigated through a series of experiments (at $30^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, and $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, and 96 hours). The specimens not coated on one side with an aqueous solution saturated with LiCl-KCl experienced no corrosion at any temperature, not even when the test duration exceeded 96 hours. Stainless steel exposed to LiCl-KCl experienced almost no corrosion below $40^{\circ}C$, but pitting corrosion was observed at temperatures above $60^{\circ}C$. As the duration of the experiment was increased, the rate of corrosion accelerated in proportion to the temperature. The 316 type stainless steel exhibited better corrosion resistance than did the 304 type. In the case of copper, the rate of corrosion accelerated in proportion to the duration and temperature but, unlike the case of stainless steel, the corrosion was more general. As a result, the extent of copper corrosion was about three times that of stainless steel.

  • Electropolishing technology uses an electrochemical reaction and improves surface roughness, glossiness, and corrosion resistance. In this investigation, electropolishing was performed to improve the corrosion resistance of super austenitic stainless steel. As a result of electropolishing, surface roughness (0.16 ㎛) was improved by about 76.5% compared to mechanical polishing (0.68 ㎛). In addition, the electropolished surface was smooth because the average and variance values of the depth histogram were small. Tafel analysis was performed after a potentiodynamic polarization experiment with seawater temperature, and the microstructure was compared and analyzed. The corrosion current density at 30 ℃, 60 ℃, and 90 ℃ was reduced by 0.083 ㎂/cm2, 0.296 ㎂/cm2, and 0.341 ㎂/cm2, respectively. Pitting occurred in the mechanical polished specimen at 30 ℃, but partial intergranular corrosion was observed in the electropolished specimen, and pitting occurred predominantly at both 60 ℃ and 90 ℃. In addition, the damage depths of the electropolished specimen were shallower than those of mechanical polishing at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃, but the opposite result was seen at 90 ℃.

  • Microbiologically influenced Corrosion (MIC) is one of the most deleterious effects of metal microbe interactions. When a fresh metal surface comes in contact with a non-sterile fluid, biofilm formation is ensued. This might result in the initiation of corrosion. The sites and materials where MIC is implicated are versatile. Industries such as shipping, power generation, chemical etc are reported to be affected. The rapid and unexpected failure of AISI type 304 stainless steel was investigated in the laboratory by simulation studies for a period of 4 months. Slime and water samples from the failure site were screened for corrosion causing bacteria. Both aerobic and anaerobic nora were enumerated and identified using PCR techniques. Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. were the most common aerobic bacteria isolated from the water and slime samples, whilst sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were the major anaerobic bacteria. The aerobic bacteria were used for the corrosion experiments in the laboratory. Coupon exposure studies were conducted using a very dilute (0.1%V/V) nutrient broth medium. The coupons after retrieval were observed under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for the presence of MIC pits. Compared to sterile controls, metal coupons exposed to Pseudomonas sp and Bacillus sp. showed the initiation of severe pitting corrosion. However, amongst these two strains, Psudomonas sp. caused pits in a very short span of 14 days. Towards the end of the experiment, severe pitting was observed in both the cases. The detailed observation of pits showed they vary both in number and shapes. Whilst the coupons exposed to Bacillus sp. showed widely spread scales like pits, those exposed to Pseudomonas sp. showed smaller and circular pits, which had grown in number and size by the end of the experiment. From these results it is inferred that the rapid and unexpected failure of 304 SS might be due to MIC. Pseudonwnas sp. could be considered as the major responsible bacteria that could initiate pits in the metallic structures. As the appearance of pits was different in both the tested strains, it was thought that the mechanisms of pit formation are different. Experiments on these lines are being continued.

  • This paper selected three kinds of grease with the same type but different consistency for the experiment. The purpose of the experiment is tested the effect of different consistency of grease on the wear of the gear surface. Different torque test groups were selected in the test, and the lubrication effect of different greases was tested in the test groups with the same torque. After each set of tests, the wear of the gear surfaces was observed and recorded. The data recorded in the experiment included the area of the wear area on the gear surface, the type of wear and the volume of wear. After the test, the gear surface roughness was measured. By calculating the wear volume, the effects of different concentrations of grease on the gear surface wear were compared. The experimental results show that under different stress conditions, the consistency of the grease has a great influence on the lubricating effect of the gear surface and the gear wear. Under the condition with low speed and high torque, different grease consistency affect the gear surface wear, the high consistency grease can reduce the wear of the gear surface, so that the gear can get better lubrication effect during the work.
