A servo type angle of attack sensor using the null-seeking method is designed and its characteristics are analyzed in this study. Angle-of-attack in the null-seeking method is given by the probe rotation angle with respect to the body reference line when pressure difference measured in two holes on the probe becomes zero. This method provides highly accurate and uniform angle-of-attack measurements over all range. Hence, this kind of angle-of-attack sensor is adequate for unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). In this paper, we first analyze the requirements for developing angle-of-attack sensors. And the servo type angle-of-attack sensor is then designed and fabricated. The on-board angle-of-attack calculation algorithm is also developed. Finally, the characteristics of the developed angle-of-attack sensor are identified through MATLAB Simulink and wind tunnel tests.

The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.
The instrumentation was studied in order to measure aerodynamic performance and efficiency of a compressor as a component of a 5MW-class gas turbine for power generation. In case of an axial compressor, the distributions of static pressure on a casing can be obtained by averaging at each stage and those of total pressure and temperature in the flow field of the compressor can be measured with a Kiel temperature probe. In case of a centrifugal compressor, the static pressures at the hub and the tip, respectively, of an impeller exit are considerably different, so the pressures need to be measured at both positions and thereafter averaged. The distributions of static pressures in a diffuser and a deswirler are measured at ten positions along five streamlines in one pitch. In addition the flow field can be measured in detail by 5-hole Pitot tube in order to analyze the flow characteristics of the core flow region and wake region and the rotor-stator interaction of the compressor.

A numerical method and experiments for the aerodynamic design of high performance two-stage axial flow fans was carried out. A vortex ring element method used for the aerodynamic analysis of the propellers was extended to the fan-duct system. Fan Performance and velocity profiles at the fan inlet and outlet are compared with experimental data for the validations of numerical method. Performance test was done based on KS B 6311(testing methods for turbo-fans and blowers). The velocity profile was obtained using a 5-hole pitot tube by the non-nulling method. The two stage axial flow fan configurations for the optimal operation conditions were set by using the experimental results for the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively low efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. In contrast, the single stage and the two-stage axial flow fans showed performance improvements due to the swirl velocity reduction by the stator. The peak efficiency of the two stage axial flow fan was improved by 21% and 6%, compared to the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan, respectively.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the horseshoe vortex system formed around cylindrical obstacles mounted vertically on the surface over which a boundary layer is formed. To measure the mean velocity of the flow field, a five-hole Pitot tube has been used. In addition, surface static pressure measurements and surface flow visualization were also performed. From the five-hole probe measurements, vorticity distribution was deduced numerically and the streamwise velocity distribution was also examined. To consider the effect of the leading-edge shape on the formation of the horseshoe vortex, a qualitative comparison was made between the three-dimensional flows around a circular cylinder and a wedge-type cylinder. The five-hole probe measurements showed a single primary vortex which exists immediately upstream of the obstacles, and endwall flow visualization showed the existence of a corner vortex. As the vortex passes around the obstacle, the vortex strength is reduced and the vortex core moves radially outward. Due to this horseshoe vortex, the fluid momentum is found to decrease along the streamwise direction. Since the horseshoe vortex formed around a wedge-type cylinder has weaker strength and is confined to a narrower region than that around a circular, the possibility that the secondary flow loss due to the horseshoe vortex can be reduced through a change of the leading- edge shape is proposed.

An experimental study on the micro-supersonic jet flow fields has been carried out. A sonic nozzle of 440 ${\mu}m$-exit diameter and a Laval nozzle of 800 ${\mu}m$ exit diameter with the nozzle exit Mach number 2.0 were fabricated by stretching a micro Pyrex glass tube for the present experiments. Schlieren flow visualization and Pitot pressure distribution of the jet flow field were obtained. Representative characteristics of the jet flow fields such as, supersonic length, jet core length, similarity of the velocity field, and jet spreading rates, have been observed. All the results were compared to previous observations of larger supersonic jets of higher Reynolds numbers, and it was found that overall characteristics of the micro supersonic jet are qualitatively similar as those of the higher Reynolds number jets, except the jet core length and the jet spreading rate.

An impulse turbine, which is a main component of a liquid rocket engine, needs to be a small size with light weight and generate large power. Since the impulse turbine is being operated under complicated supersonic conditions, flow analysis and performance prediction largely depend on CFD technique. In order to increase the reliability of the prediction code, however, it often requires an experimental data to compare. In this research a rotating turbine rotor with multiple blades is simulated with a two-dimensional stationary cascade to check the effect of major flow parameters. Mach number is measured at nozzle exit by using a pitot tube and the blade thrust was also measured with a load cell. The measured thrust coefficient and the power are compared well with the designed conditions, which proves the design procedures are properly taken.

Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) of KRISO enables us to conduct cavitation tests of the propeller attached to a ship model. As the ship model tests are done at rather high Reynolds number of 107~108, flow measurement system such as pitot tube cannot be employed because of structural safety problems in its system and difficulties in installing it within the test section. Thus, KRISO has developed new 3-D LDV system used in large test section of LCT. There are several difficulties in using 3-D LDV, which did not allow efficient operation of it. The first trouble was the calibration using the conventional pin hole. To make the focus with same laser-beam waists at the wanted position, the high spatial resolution CCD is utilized in the calibration procedure for 3-D LDV. The off-axis configuration provides two velocity components in the horizontal plane and on-axis configuration gives third velocity component in the vertical plane. The horizontal velocity components are also obtained in the coincidence mode, which prevents any misleading results in the off-axis configuration. The nominal wake of Aframax tanker model is measured by the developed 3-D LDV system. The measured hull wake showed good agreement with that obtained by CFD calculation.

this paper the acoustic signature from a supersonic nozzle is measured and compared to the result of a program developed for a gas turbine noise prediction. In order to measure the jet Mach Number, the pressure and temperature at the settling chamber was measured along with pressures from a pitot-tube placed near the exit. The results are also compared to the ones obtained with a shadow graph technique. Jet noise produced by an imperfectly expanded jet contains shock associated noise, which consist of broadband noise and screech tone noise. For subsonic condition, the directivity is dominant to the downstream direction due to turbulence mixing noise. For supersonic conditions, however, the directivity is dominant toward upstream direction due to shock associated noise. The comparison with a jet exhaust noise prediction code shows good agreement at supersonic conditions but needs to be improved at subsonic speeds.
In general, a large-capacity axial flow fan is used for industrial processes or ventilation in a social overhead capital infrastructure. The main characteristics of the large axial-flow fan need a lot of electrical power consumption and operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Since the large axial flow fan consumes several hundreds to thousands kW per hour, both manufacturer and consumer are struggling to select high efficiency products for saving energy and reducing operation cost. Therefore, the performance testing should be accurately conducted in experimental equipments. The performance estimation and uncertainty of measurement of the axial-flow fan gathered from the result from nozzle shaped testing equipments certified with ANSI/AMCA standard and duct shaped testing equipment under the same experimental condition. The experimental results from both facilities have maximum 17% differences in performance evaluation and uncertainty of measurement. As considering that the differences, it is doubt about the reliability of testing result. The test was repeated with the specific term during 12 months because it is important to fully reflect the real conditions and to decide the repeatability of data. The evaluation of duct type testing facilities was failed to get an uncertainty measure. Testing results were previously published. As a series of previous paper, axial fan (∅1690 mm) and duct type testing facilities were fabricated. The purpose of fabricating testing equipment was testing an uncertainty measurement under the controlled environments.
