  • A model engine having a flat cylinder head and a piston face and an off-center intake valve is investigated in this analysis. Calculation domain is confined to the half of the cylinder with swirl free inlet velocity condition. Due to the absence of measured inlet conditions, the inlet flowrates during induction period are calculated from overall mass and energy conservation requirements. Finite difference equation for velocity and pressure were solved by modified SIMPLER algorithm, standard k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model and hybrid scheme. From the result of prediction, dimensionless velocity distribution and turbulence intensities are investigated at each crank angle.

  • A numerical code which can simulate unsteady, incompressible and 3-dimensional flows in an engine cylinder has been developed. The governing equations based on the cylindrical coordinate are discretized by the finite volume method with staggered variable arrangements. A geometric conservation rule is also incorporated into the simulation code in order to deal with a moving boundary problem. For the unsteady simulation, a fractional step method is adopted. The law of wall is applied to the wall boundaries and standard $k-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is used to describe the in-cylinder turbulent flow. The model cylinder has one eccentric port, flat piston and flat cylinder-head. The comparisons with experimental data show fairly well qualitative agreement.

  • Actuator being used in the ship supplies engine with air. When actuator is out of order, engine is not operated. This out of order is due to fracture of piston or rotating of spindle in the case of plastic deformation of parallel part in locking plate. For this reason, locking plate must be guaranteed enough strength. Therefor in this paper, the effects of changes with the clearance of between spindle and parallel part, the contact height of parallel part and spindle, the side circle diameter of parallel part and the width of locking plate in the designated torque are investigated. The result of this investigation shows the relation between locking plate and spindle.

  • During contact between surfaces, there is wear and the generation of wear. The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important monitoring information about the condition of the machine. Therefore, this paper was undertaken for the Ferrography system of wear debris generated from a lubricated moving machine surface. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the Falex wear test of the Pin and V-Block types by Ti(C,N) coated. It was shown from the test results that wear particle concentration(WPC), wear severity index(Is) and size distribution have come out all higher with increases in sliding friction time. With the Ferrogram thin leaf wear debris as well as ball and plate type wear particles were observed.

  • Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stroke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air maybe made to flow intermittently through a pipe. In this paper a exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experimentally analyzer the decrease inflow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables, other than rotational speed, give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.

  • Diesel power plant can be used as a power supplier for the isolated place where consumption of electric power is variable. The reason is that mobility and durability of diesel engine is superior to those of other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages for using these diesel engines such as bigger vibratory excitation force comparing to the others, which result from high combustion pressure of cylinders and inertia force of piston reciprocating masses. In this paper, control and optimization of torsional vibration of 12K90MC-S engine for diesel power plant using uneven crank angles is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

  • In-cylinder flow of a purpose-built small HSDI Hydra Diesel engine was investigated by laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) during induction and compression processes. The flow was quantified in terms of ensemble-averaged axial and swirl velocities, normalized by the mean piston speed, at a plane located 12mm from the cylinder head and corresponding to the mid-plane of the diametrically-opposed quartz windows at an enigne speed of 1000rpm. The formation of toroidal vortices during the intake process and the evolution and decay of swirl motion during the compression process were observed. Turbulence at around TDC of compression became homogeneous and isotropic.

  • The model cavity scramjet engine experiments are carried out using T3 free-piston shock tunnel. Upstream hydrogen fuel is injected before the cavity with different injection pressure. OH planar laser-induced fluorescence is used to investigate the combustion zone and piezoelectric pressure transducers are used to define the pressure rise due to the combustion. Main combustion region is a mixing layer which is between air and fuel. Also high OH fluorescence signal is appeared in the shear layer above the cavity in high equivalence ratio. From the OH signal in the cavity, this fuel injection system can be a role as a flame- holder.

  • In this study, single cylinder engines with different tumble ratio were made to find out in-cylinder fluid motion and flame propagation. Tumble ratio derived from the steady state flow rig test. Flame propagation speed was obtained using cylinder head gasket ionization probe and the piston ionization probe. And the combustion pressure in cylinder was measured to analyze the combustion characteristics. In case of high tumble engine, BSFC and BSHC were decreased and BSNOx was increased at part load test. Also BMEP and combustion peak pressure was increased at full load test. Tumble flow motion had an great effects on initial burning period rather than main burning period in part load test.

  • For the wear protection of cylinder bore in aluminum cast material the internal plasma spraying technology offers a new economical solution. The size and the weight of the engine blocks significantly can be decreased in comparison with the traditional cast iron sleeves. The coefficient of friction between piston ring and cylinder wall sensitively can be reduced and the wear resistance increased from several factors. The paper gives an overview of the technology from the AlSi cast alloys for engine block to the non destructive testing technology used after the machining by diamond honing. The actual results in engines of different types also will be shown. The economical advantages of the plasma spraying (or the internal coating in cylinder bore also will be discussed in comparison with the different alternatives of technology. The aspect of the market introduction also will be discussed in this paper.
