In order to develop two-stroke free-piston hydrogen engine to obtain high thermal efficiency and low emission, backfire occurrence have to be prevented. In this research, backfire characteristics are analyzed as functions of the intake valve opening timing and compression chamber pressure under piston by using RICEM (Rapid Intake Compression Expansion Machine) that has reverse uni-flow scavenging. As the result, reverse uni-flow scavenging is advantage about back fire. but, it exists suitable intake valve opening timing and its timing become known that equivalence ratio 1 retard until the piston rises. Also, To rise chamber pressure of lower piston, this does not cause backfire occurs in equivalent ratio 0.6 observed back fire. Therefore, 2cycle hydrogen fueled free-piston engine is undesirable scavenging compression by compressing the piston.
The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wears of piston and piston rings were investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder, four cycle, indirect injection diesel engine operating at an engine load of 75% and an engine speed of 1600 rpm. For the purpose of comparison between the wear rates of two cylinders with and without EGR, the recirculated exhaust gas was sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot contenets in exhaust emissions were removed by an intentionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diameter), while only the fresh air was inhaled into the other cylinder. These experiments were carried out on the fuel injection timing fixed at 15.3$^{\circ}$ BTDC. It was found that the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR increased a little bit, but the piston head diameter increased, rather than decreased, owing to soot adhesion and erosion wear, and especially larger with EGR, and that the wear rates of the top and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR were more than twice the wear rate of top ring in case of no EGR, but the wear rate of oil rings thickness without EGR increased greater than that with EGR.
The configuration of intake port and piston is a dominant factor of inlet air flow and mixture formation in an engine cylinder, resepectively. This study has analyzed intake port and piston characteristics for swirl flow of a heavy-duty LPG engine. As an available technology to optimize intake port, the steady flow rig test has been applied for measuring swirl ratio and mean flow coefficient. And we measured the mean velocity and turbulence intensity of swirl flow under motoring condition in transparent engine cylinder by backward scattering LDV system. From these results, the piston and cylinder head with a good evaluated swirl flow characteristics were developed and adapted fur a 11L heavy-duty engine using the liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) system. The obtained results are expected to be a fundamental data for developing intake port and piston.
A piston assembly is very important because it directly receives the energy generated during combustion process. Surely, the friction and lubrication of piston-ring pack do an important role in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. In fact, the friction loss in piston-ring pack is the biggest portion to the whole engine friction. Therefore, the improvement of lubrication quality and friction loss in piston-ring pack will be directly related with the improvement in the performance and fuel economy of an engine. Meanwhile, the oil consumption and blow-by gas through piston-cylinder-ring crevices have to be controlled as less as possible. In these two aspects, the study on the optimized design of piston-ring pack has to be carried out. In this study, for the efficient design of piston-ring pack, it is focused to develop a basic computer program that predicts the inter-ring pressure, the motion of ring and the blow-by gas through a crevice volume model between adjacent rings, and the oil film thickness and the friction computed by lubrication theories.
An efficient method to predict the convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the engine piston is proposed. The method is based on the inverse method of the thermal conduction problem and uses a numerical optimization technique. In the method, the heat transfer coefficients are numerically obtained so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. The method can be effectively used to analyze the temperature distribution of engine pistons in case when application of prescribed-temperature boundary condition is not reasonable because of insufficient number of measured temperatures. A hollow sphere problem with an analytic solution is taken as a simple example and accuracy and efficiency is demonstrated. The method is applied to a practical large liquid petroleum gas(LPG) engine piston and the heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the piston is successfully calculated. Resulting analyzed temperature favorably coincides with measured temperature.
The performance of a direct-injection diesel engine often depends on the strength of swirl or squish, the shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is natural because the combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. Since the available duration to make the mixture formation of air-fuel is very short, it is difficult to make complete mixture. Therefore, an early stage of combustion is violent, which leads to the weakness of noise and vibration. In this paper, the combustion process of a common-rail diesel engine was studied by employing two kinds of pistons. One has several cavities on the piston crown to intensify the squish during the compression stroke in order to improve the atomization of fuel, we call this multi cavity piston in this paper. The other is a toroidal single cavity piston, generally used in high speed diesel engines. To take photographs of flame and flaming duration, a four-stroke diesel engine was remodeled into a two-stroke visible single cylinder engine and a high speed video camera was used.
In this paper, the effects of scale formation in engine water jacket upon the thermal durability of engine itself and its component parts were studied. To understand the effect of quality of water, a full load engine endurance test for 50 hours was carried out with not-treated underground water. The followings were found through the tested engine inspection after the endurance test; 1-2 mm thick scale formation in the engine water jacket, valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing, piston pin stick, and cylinder bore scuffing in siamese area. In order to understand the causes of above test results, the heat rejection rate to coolant, the metal surface temperature of combustion chamber, and the oil and exhaust gas temperatures were measured and analyzed. The scale formed in the engine water jacket played a role as thermal insulator. The scale formed in the engine reduced the heat rejection rate to coolant and it caused to increase the metal surface temperature. The reduced heat rejection rate to coolant increased the heat rejection rate to oil and exhaust gas and increased the oil and exhaust gas temperature. Also, the reasons of valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing and cylinder bore scuffing, and piston pin stick quantitatively analyzed in this paper.
Present combustion engines have reached almost at the limit of development due to the fundamental structural problems. This study was carried out to propose a new concept internal combustion engine which has great potential advantages to the conventional engines. Proposed new concept engine is a kind of rotary engine. A rotor is rotating concentrically in a cylinder which is divided into two partitioning valves. and it makes four compartments in the cylinder. The volumes of each of four compartments are changing continuously with the rotor movement, and performs the functions of intake, compression. expansion and exhaust simultaneously. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Expected theoretical thermal efficiency is 44.9 percent at the condition of 1000rpm and compression ratio of 8.0. which is almost the same as that of the conventional engines. i.e., piston and Wankel rotary engine. 2. The new concept engine has 2. working strokes in every revolution. Therefore. the new concept engine can reduce the specific weight and volume than four-stroke piston engine. 3. The torque variation is very small. therefore minimal noise and vibration are expectable. 4. The new concept engine can reduce mechanical energy loss than piston engine because neither crank mechanism nor eccentrical motion exists.

Clearance movements of engine piston are regarded very important because they cause impact vibrations as well as many tribological problems. Some of the major parameters that influence these kinds of performances are piston profiles, piston offsets and clearance magnitudes. In our study. computational investigation is performed about the piston movements in the clearance between piston and cylinder liner by changing the skirt profiles and piston offsets. Our results show that curved profile and more offset to thrust side have better performance with low side impact during the engine cycle.
The aim of this paper is to determine temperature and stress distributions in a ceramic based on Partially Stabilized Zirconia coated steel piston crown by using plasma spraying for improving performance of a marine diesel engine. Effects of coating constituent and thickness on temperature and stress distributions were investigated including comparisons with results from an uncoated piston by means of finite element method namely ANSYS. Temperature developed at the coated surface is significantly higher than that of the uncoated piston. The maximum stress components occur between bond coat and adjacent ceramic layer. Provided that coating thickness is constant as 0.5 mm, when numbers of layers increase, magnitude of the normal stress decrease about 34.1% on the base metal surface according to uncoated piston, but the base metal surface temperature of the steel piston increase about 13.1%.
