  • This work focuses on eliminating tiny particles from the coolant in a nuclear pipe line by using a permanent magnet on the exterior surface of the pipe. This method have some merits compared with the currently applied methods and is expected to be applied to most of the pipe lines in the nuclear plant. For instance in this method, a ring is attacked to the exterior surface of the pipe, so that it does not affect the inflows directly. Further, the cost needed in the initial build-up of the facility is low.

  • Orbital GTA welding is used in the pressure pipe line of auto-mobile, LNG and plant piping. To weld the pipe line safely, to some extent, the back bead must be formed in the root pass. In the plate welding the back bead can be observed, but in the pipe welding, the back bead can not be observed directly. In the welding around circumference, the parameters such as gravity, surface tension and arc force are different at each position. And then D/B for welding condition at each position are required. We also studied about the setting of the optimum orbital welding condition by controlling heat input.

  • Post-chlorination for disinfection in portable water process is final process. The design factors of post-chlorination are inflow pipe line from tank of filtrated water to cleanwell, injection point of chlorine, appropriate shape of baffle in cleanwell for disinfection efficient improvement. Until now, we did not have the design standard for post-chlorination. we evaluated most suitable design method of post-chlorination process in portable water process by using computational fluid dynamics in this research. We found the result that the pipe to connect the cleanwell should be one. If pipe line split into two or more, uniform distribution of the flow is difficult. Second, optimal injection point of chlorine is the middle of pipe line to connect the cleanwell. Therefore, it is not economical to install chlorine contact basin in cleanwell. Third, the shape of baffle should be designed in order to water flows in one direction. And we found that it is better to design the low number of flow turning.

  • Demand of Natural Gas (NG) consumption is continuously increasing by long service life and low environmental impact than other fossil fuels. Because of this reasons, Gas wells exploration and huge LNG plant construction project are being boosted world-widely. Especially, overseas NG pipe-line projects are emerging by considering safe and efficiency at the inter-country sections. At the same time, Korean contractors are being achieved to record-breaking performance at 2011's overseas construction market and 80% of new-record was attained from overseas plant construction projects. Nevertheless, Korean contractors are behind than overseas leading contractors by geographical distance from gas wells and concentrated demand for storage plant. In these reasons, this paper aims to develop the standardized business process model(BPM) for overseas NG pipe-line project at project planning phase to support the project entry. To this aim, first of all, extract the BPM through the broad literature and overseas construction market review and domestic/overseas pipe-line project analysis. Second, Test-bed was performed to confirm of practical applicability by 4 experts. And then 15 experts survey were performed to validate the usability and effectiveness of BPM for overseas NG pipe-line project. Consequently, if Korean contractors are using this BPM with their own know-how and experiences, it will be returned to more reasonable and rational references for decision making in overseas NG pipe-line project.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the relative economic benefits between the septic tank and exclusive sewage pipe line in designing the large building at combined sewer districts. With the case study of Lotte World Tower Building, we analyze a cost-benefit between two alternatives. The research results showed 2 years of payback period, about ₩6.17 billion of NPV, and 1.93 of B/C ratio for installing the exclusive sewage pipe line in comparison with septic tank. This results provide useful guidelines for policy establishment of the septic tank closure and for plausibility of installing exclusive sewage pipe line when constructing a large building. In the future, it will be necessary to consider additional cost-benefit analysis including burden charge borne by causers, the burden of management responsibility with a exclusive sewage pipe line, and the economic benefits of reducing odor.

  • A General Pipe Break Prediction Model that incorporates linear and exponential models in its form is developed. The model is capable of fitting pipe break trends that have linear, exponential or in between of linear and exponential trend by using a weighting factor. The weighting factor is adjusted to obtain a best model that minimizes the sum of squared errors of the model. The model essentially plots a best curve (or a line) passing through "cumulative number of pipe breaks" versus "break times since installation of a pipe" data points. Therefore, it prevents over-predicting future number of pipe breaks compared to the conventional exponential model. The optimal replacement time equation is derived by using the Threshold Break Rate equation by Loganathan et al. (2002).

  • In this paper, we analyze inductive interference in conductive material around 345 kV power transmission line, and evaluate the effects of mitigation wires. Finite element method (FEM) is used to numerically compute induced eddy currents as well as magnetic fields around powder transmission lines. In the analysis model, geometries and electrical properties of various elements such as power transmission line, buried pipe lines, overhead ground wire, and conducting earth are taken into accounts. The calculation shows that mitigation wire reduces fairly good amount of eddy currents in buried pipe line. To find the optimum magnetic field shielding location of mitigation wire, we applied evolution strategy algorithm, a kind of stochastic approach, to the analysis model. Finally, it was shown that we can find more effective shielding effects with optimum location of one mitigation wire than with arbitrary location of multi-mitigation wires around the buried pipe lines.

  • Flow of fluid has been studied in various fields of fluid engineering. To hydraulic engineers, the unsteady flow such as pulsation and liquid hammering in pipes has been considered as a serious trouble. So we are supposed to approach the formalized mathematical model by using more exact momentum equation for fluid transmission lines. Most of recent studies fur pipe line have been studied without considerations of variation of viscosity and temperature, which are the main factors of pressure loss causing the friction of fluid inside pipe line. Frequency response experiments are carried out with use of a rotary sinusoidal flow generator to investigate wave equation take into account viscosity and temperature. But we observed that measured value of gains are reduced as temperature increased. And it was respectively observed that the measured value of gains are reduced and line width of gain is broadened out, when temperature was high in the same condition. As we confessed, pressure loss and phase delay are closely related with the length, diameter and temperature of pipe line. In addition, they are the most important factors, when we decide the momentum energy of working fluid.

  • KSNPs(Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) have been applied the break exclusion criteria to the high energy lines passing through containment penetration area to ensure that piping failures would not cause the loss of containment isolation function, and to reduce the resulting dynamic effects. Systems with the criteria are the Main Steam system, Feed Water system, Steam Generator Blowdown system, and Chemical & Volume Control system. In accordance with FSAR(Final Safety Analysis Report), a 100% volumetric examination by augmented in-service inspection of all pipe welds appled the break exclusion criteria is required for the break exclusion application piping. However, it is difficult to fully satisfy the requirements of inspection because 12", 8" and 6" weldolet weldments of Main Steam pipe line have complex structural shapes. To resolve the difficulty on the application of conventional UT(Ultrasonic Testing) technique, realistic mock-ups and UT calibration blocks were made. Simulations of conventional UT were performed utilizing CIVA, a commercial NDE(Nondestructive Examination) simulation software. Phased array UT experiments were performed through mock-up including artificial notch type flaws. A phased array UT technique is finally developed to improve the reliability of ultrasonic test at main steam line pipe to 12", 8" and 6" branch connection weld.
