A remediation technique for buried pipeline system subject to permanent ground deformation is proposed. Specifically, EPS (expanded polystyrene) geofoam blocks are used as low density backfill, thereby reducing soil restraint and pipeline strains. In order to evaluate this remediation technique, a series of 12 centrifuge model tests with HDPE pipe were performed. The amount or spatial extent of the low density backfill was varied, as well as the orientation of the pipe with respect to the fault offset. Specifically, in the $-63.5^{\circ}$ test, the orientation was such that the pipe was placed in flexure and axial tension. The $-85^{\circ}$ orientation placed the pipe mainly in flexure. In all cases, the behavior of the remediated pipe was compared to that for the unremediated pipe. The geofoam backfill was successful in improving pipe behavior for two of the three pipe/fault orientations. However, for the $60^{\circ}$ orientation, the pipe buckled in compression irrespective of the geofoam backfill.
When underground pipe is installed, backfill materials need proper compaction. But in case of circular underground pipe, compaction of backfill material is difficult and compaction efficiency is poor at beloe the pipe. It caused the stability of underground pipe is reduced and various damages occurred. One of the solutions to solve this problem for underground pipe is to use controlled low strength material (CLSM). CLSM is made by concept of low strength concrete, which is applied to geotechnical engineering field. The representative characteristics of CLSM are self-leveling, self-compacting and flowability. In addition, its strength can be controlled and its construction method is simple. The behavior of underground pipe was investigated by finite element analysis for various backfill materials under same condition. As a result, in case of using the CLSM as backfill material, surface settlement and displacement of pipe are reduced comparing with those in case of using field soil or sand.

During construction of circular lifeline pipe, the non-proper compaction along the pipe and the decrease of compaction efficiency are the main problems to induce the failure of underground pipe. The use of CLSM(controlled low strength materials) is one of the applications to overcome those problems. In this research, the numerical analysis by PENTAGON FEM program was carried out for 20 cases with the couple of combinations on bedding materials, backfill materials, and pipes. From the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM as backfill materials reduced the settlement of ground surface and the deformation of pipe employed. In case of the vertical deformation on the pipe, common soil backfill for flexible pipes showed 2 times for rigid pipes, but CLSM backfill case did less deformation than the soil backfill for rigid pipes. CLSM backfills for rigid pipes showed the similar results. Judging from the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM increases the structure capacity of the underground pipes.
In the case of the existing method of underground pipe construction, the difficulty of the bedding compaction of pipe causes reducing the compaction efficiency and the stability of the underground facilities and conclusively damaging the structures. One of the methods to solve these problem is using the flowable fills as a backfill material. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis of the underground pipe was performed in order to evaluate the behavior of pipe according to backfill mixtures. To estimate the deformation characteristic of the underground pipe, the displacement of the main part of the pipe, ground settlement and vertical earth pressures were measured in different backfill mixtures and maintaining the other conditions constantly. As a result of numerical analysis, using the flowable fills as the backfill material is better than using sand in reducing the ground settlement, the pipe deformation and the vertical earth pressure aspect.
In this Paper, to calculate vertical earth pressure affected from several factors in case of rigid buried pipe with cohesionless backfill soil. The result from PENTAGON 3D is compared with several equation's result such as the Janssen, Marston, Spangler, Handy's equation. Result of study shows that vertical earth pressure of each equation is affected by backfill width, backfill depth and wall friction. And vertical earth pressure is linearly increased with backfill depth and backfill width. Marston's equation and Handy's equation are overestimated and FEM(Finite Element method) analysis and Janssen's Silo equation are affected by more backfill depth than backfill width.

In this research, finite element method was carried out to evaluate the defomation of pipe and surface displacement for backfill of underground ficility. Various conditions for analysis were employer, including two different pipes(PE and concrete pipe), two different excavation depth(60cm and 150cm) and width(1.5D and 2D), a regular sand backfill, and four different flowable backfills. The vertical deformation of 60 cm diameter for PE was measured three times more than that of 30 cm diameter. The measured deformations for regular backfill and four flowable backfills were 0.320mm, and 0.135mm to 0.155mm, respectively. It ratio was around 40%. In case of 30cm diameter of concrete pipe, the measured vertical defomation was around 0.004mm for all the backfill materials. In case of installation depth, the effect of flowable backfill for flexible pipe is better than for rigid pipe. There is little effect on the deformation of concrete pipe with regular sand backfill and flowable backfill.
Millions of scrap tires are discarded annually in Turkey. The bulk of which are currently landfilled or stockpiled. These tires consume valuable landfill space or if improperly disposed, create a fire hazard and provide a prolific breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. Used tires pose both a serious public and environmental health problem which means that economically feasible alternatives for scrap tire disposal must be found. Some of the current uses of scrap tires are tire-derived fuel, creating barrier reefs and as an asphalt additive in the form of crumb rubber. However, there is a much need for the development of additional uses for scrap tires. One development the creation of shreds from scrap tires that are coarse grained, free draining and have a low compacted density thus offering significant advantages for use as lightweight subgrade fill and backfill material. This paper reports a comprehensive laboratory study that was performed to evaluate the use of a shredded tire-sand mixture as a backfill material in trench conditions. A steel frame test tank with glass walls was created to replicate a classical trench section in field conditions. The results of the test demonstrated that shredded tires mixed with sand have a definite potential to be effectively used as backfill material for buried pipe installations.
In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM (controlled low strength materials) accelerated flow ability. CLSM has already been stage of commercial use in the foreign countries led by power company. In this study, we estimated the behavior of flexible pipe with flowable backfill materials and sand to compare on the DB24 load. The results showed that the deformation of flexible pipe is affected by types of backfill materials. CLSM shows better behavior characteristics than compacting sand. But numerical and analytical results that peformed to compare to the field test results showed big gap with the field results.

In this paper, the utilization of waste foundry sand produced in the molding process is studied as a backfill material for underground electric utility systems such as concrete box structures and pipe lines for power supply. The physical, chemical and thermal properties for waste foundry sand are investigated for mechanical stability, environmental hazard and power transmission capacity. Also its properties are compared with the natural river sand. The test results show that waste foundry sand can be utilized for underground concrete box structures as a backfill material; however, it can not be applied to underground pipe lines due to high thermal resistivity or low power transmission capacity.

The main causes of subsidence and sinkholes in the lower part of urban roads are sewage line foundation and inadequate compaction of backfill material. This leads to many problems, such as the breakage of joints in sewer pipes, poor connection, pipe breakage, and cracks. To solve this problem, the support factor related to the sewer foundation and the safety factor according to the excavation depth were evaluated. For the foundation of rigidity tolerance, crushed stone foundation, and abandoned concrete foundation, a recently newly developed site assembly-type lightweight plastic foundation were used. Backfill materials were applied on site (sandy soil and clayey soil) and fluid backfill was recycled onsite. To evaluate the depth of excavation and the safety factor of each sewer pipe foundation, the design load considering the load factor and the support factor was evaluated. The support coefficients were 0.377 for a crushed stone foundation, 0.243 and 0.220 for an abandoned concrete foundation ($180^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}$), and 0.231 for a lightweight plastic foundation and fluid backfill. Overall, the safety factor was low when using the crushed stone foundation, and the safety rate was the highest when the foreclosed concrete foundation ($180^{\circ}$) was used. In addition, when the combination of lightweight plastic and fluid backfill materials was used, the safety factor was higher than that of abandoned concrete foundation ($120^{\circ}$), which means that the newly developed lightweight plastic foundation can be used as another alternative base of a steel pipe.
