  • A process for the concurrent welding and extruding of pipe was designed for continuous production of fin tubes. Unlike a conventional pipe extrusion, the new process is able to extrude a pipe continuously without limit of length by using spring type wire material. The current paper provides the basic research for welding during the extrusion using a spring type wire material. The object of the current study is to investigate the possibility that the spring type wire material could be extrude into a welded pipe. The appropriate extrusion ratio was selected through investigation of loads using computer simulations. As a result, experiments showed that pipe could be welded and simultaneously extruded with spring type wire material of aluminum. The tensile strength of the welded and extruded aluminum pipe can reach 80% of tensile strength of original aluminum feedstock.

  • The heat transfer and thermal stress-distribution were numerically determined by using the finite element method for a butt-welded pipe. A mechanical stress relieving(MSR) treatment which has been frequently used in the fabrication of pressure vessels instead of the post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was also simulated to investigate its effect of reducing the residual stress in the welded zone by a mechanical loading.

  • The failure pressure for corroded pipeline was measured by burst testing and classified with respect to corrosion sizes and corroded regions - the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of pipe. A series of finite element analyses were performed to obtain a limit load solution for corrosion defects on the basis of burst test. As a result, the criteria for failure assessment of corrosion defect within the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of API 5L X65 gas pipeline were proposed.

  • To assess a creep life of elevated temperature plant components, inspections and analysis are usually focused on the critical locations. In this study, stress analysis of a weld region in branch part of Y-piece was conducted by using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. The stresses at the inner and outer surface in the weld part were estimated by using elastic and elastic-creep analysis. For the elastic-creep analysis two kinds of elastic-creep analysis was conducted. The one was assumed that base and weld material properties were same and the other was that material properties were different between base and weld metal. The material properties of base and weld metal were used from reference data. The results showed the stress relaxation level and its location. The result stresses are also compared with elastic stresses.

  • This paper attempts to quantify the effect of mismatch in creep properties on steady-state stress distributions for a welded branch vessel. A particular geometry for the branch vessel is chosen. The vessel is modeled by only two materials, the base and weld metal. Idealized power law creep laws with the same creep exponents are assumed for base and weld metals. A mismatch factor is introduced, as a function of the creep constant and exponent. Steady-state stress distributions within the weld metal, resulting from threedimensional, elastic-creep finite element (FE) analyses, are then characterized by the mismatch factor. We can find that average stresses in the weld can be characterized by the mis-match factor. And there is an analogy between elastic-creep and elastic-perfectly plastic.

  • The microstructure and electrochemical analysis of welds of electric resistance welding(ERW) pipe were investigated. The direction of metal flow line in HAZ of ERW pipe shifted to the inner(or outer) surface of pipe by plastic deformation during welding. The lowest heat input welds of ERW pipe was showed crack by liquid penetrant testing. Accelerated corrosion test by constant current density of 20mA/$cm^{2}$ developed groove at the welds of ERW pipe and the measured grooving factors were about $1.2{\sim}1.5$. Corrosion potential of base metal obtained by cyclic polarization in artificial sea water(3.5wt.% NaCl solution) was 100mV higher than that of weld metal of ERW pipe.

  • In case of large steel water pipe, it have been observed that its fracture mostly occurs due to the complicated outside fatigue load on the pipe in the underground. It is also well known that its damage and leakage happen mainly in a weld zone. In this study we evaluated the fatigue characteristics based on size effect and residual stress by comparing the test results on the standard specimen collected from real pipe with those on full scale pipe.

  • It is noted that KS D 3507 pipe steel has several problems when it is used as a city gas pipe at medium pressure. So new pipe steel, KS D 3631, was developed in order to be used as a pipe for medium and low pressure and now it is being substituted for D 3507. In this study, several mechanical tests, such as tensile test, microhardness test, and Charpy impact test were conducted to get material properties of D 3507 and D 3631 pipe steels. And also microstructures at the weld and heat affected zones were observed for the two materials. From the Charpy test results $K_{IC}/$ was estimated for the upper and lower shelf and the critical crack length is calculated for supposed axial semi-elliptical surface cracks. And the burst pressure is estimated as a function of wear depth for a defective D 3631 pipe by using the finite element method. The burst pressure is also calculated for pipes with an axial crack by using the published equations.

  • From broad point of view, seam tracking has been one of main issues with respect to welding automation. Several attempts have been successful for seam tracking of fixed weaving width. As a solution of the seam tracking methods for varying groove width, the visual sensors such as CCD cameras have been adopted. Although the vision sensing techniques can achieve high accuracy, the weak point is that well-prepared vision sensor environment should be required to obtain high-quality visual measurements which can be easily affected by significant noises in industrial areas. This paper proposed an alternative seam tracking algorithm for narrow groove. A special measurement device for arc voltage, in this study, is developed to enhance the reliability of the measured welding signals. Based on the developed arc sensor algorithm, an automatic weld-width tracking algorithm is also proposed, which is able to predict the weld-position more accurately. The usefulness of the automatic weld-width tracking algorithm was well verified by applying it to gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).

  • Multipass welds of 316L stainless steel have been widely employed to the pipes of Liquid Metal Reactors. Owing to localized heating and a subsequent rapid cooling by the welding process, residual stress arises in the weld of the pipe. In this study, the residual stresses in the 316L stainless steel pipe welds were calculated by the finite element method using the ANSYS code. Also, the residual stresses both on the surface and in the interior of the thickness were measured by the HRPD(High Resolution Powder Diffractometer) instrumented in the HANARO Reactor. The experimental data and the calculated results were compared and the characteristics of the distribution of the residual stress were discussed.
