  • Static and oscillatory loss of stability of composite pipes conveying fluid is investigated. The theory of thin walled beams is applied and transverse shear, rotary inertia, primary and secondary warping effects are incorporated. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's variational principle. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are transferred to eigenvalues problem which provides the information about the dynamic characteristics of the system. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Gelerkin method. Critical velocity of fluid is investigated by increasing fiber angle and mass ratio of fluid to pipe including fluid.

  • In this work we use the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor. The mode decomposition technique is also used to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize axial defects. The arrival times of the separated modes are calculated and the axial defect lengths can be evaluated by using the estimated arrival time. Results from an experiment on a carbon steel pipe are presented and it is shown that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • The objective of this investigation is to develop an efficient method to generate and measure torsional waves in non-ferromagnetic waveguides by using magnetostrictive transducers. In existing methods using a nickel strip that is attached circumferentially to the test specimen, large current input to the magnetostrictive transducer often generates undesired wave modes in addition to the desired torsional wave. However, we propose a new method to generate the torsional waves without being accompanied with other undesirable wane modes regardless of the input current magnitude. The specific transducer configuration is suggested and its performance is also checked through a series of experiments.

  • In this paper a dynamic behavior of simply supported cracked simply supported beam with the moving masses is presented. Based on the Timoshenko beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics the of. And the crack is assumed to be in th first mode of fracture. As the depth of the crack and velocity of fluid are increased the mid-span deflection of the pipe conveying fluid with the moving mass is increased. As depth of the crack is increased, the effect that the velocity of the fluid on the mid-span deflection appeals more greatly.

  • This paper deals with a development of 2-DOF flutter experiment equipment which represents a 2-DOF typical section model. For a conventional 2-DOF flutter experiment equipment, it is hard to observe flutter boundary clearly due to the complexity of the experiment equipment. To refine our flutter experiment equipment system, a compliant mechanism based torsional spring is used. Well-designed extruded aluminum pipe works as a torsional spring. SolidWorks and ANSYS are used for modeling, analysis and design of the torsional spring. With this designed torsional spring, the 2-DOF flutter experiment equipment is developed and wind tunnel tests are performed. Clear flutter boundary which is estimated by classical flutter analysis is observed in the experiments.

  • This study presents result of comparison between two other numerical method method of char-acteristics(MOC) and Lax-Wendroff method(LWM) applied at wave action analysis of intake and exhaust pipe in terms of calculated pressure velocity and emitted noise in the time and the fre-quency domain by means of fast Fourier transform analysis. Particularly FCT(Flux Corrected Transport)scheme is appended to LWM to protest unaceptable overshoots occurring near discon-tinuity. The final conclusion of this study is that MOC should be replaced by a second order finite difference approach because of larger contributions due to high frequency components than the results from the method of characteristics. Clear benefits we can get by change are faster calcula-tion higher accuracy conservation of mass and consistent calculation method.

  • Simplified formulae for axial and bending natural frequencies of bellows are developed using an equivalent thin-walled pipe model. The axial and bending stiffness of bellows is determined using lumped transfer matrix method. Accordingly, the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA) formula for axial and bending stiffness calculation is modified using two different equivalent radii. The results from the simplified formulae are verified by those from a experiment result and a finite element (FE) model and good agreement is shown between the each other.

  • The paper deals with the energy transmission ratio of the elastic waves obliquely transmitting through a plate and a pipe. The incidence angle corresponding to the maximum transmission was determined theoretically and considered in the design of ultrasonic transducers for flow velocimetry. Experimentally-obtained transmission ratios were compared with and confirmed the theoretically-calculated results.
