The management and installation methods of pressure gauges in water supply pipeline are not efficiently regulated and their installations are different in each site. In this paper, various domestic and overseas documents are examined about the pressure gauge. In order to improve the efficiency of operation management such as pipeline network and pump operation, water pressure needs to be measured as accurate as possible, by which decision making for optimal pipe network can be achieved. To get the goal, the installation of pressure gauge should be reviewed about where and how to install. In this study, an optimal horizontal distance test is conducted, in which pressure value variation is monitored and analyzed according to up and down stream distances and valve flow control, and a optimal vertical position test is also analyzed by installing the pressure gauges vertically from the up(180°) to the bottom (0°) of the pipeline.

In a numerical simulation of open channel turbulent flows using RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) equations model equipped with VOF (Volume of Fluid) scheme, the determination of wall roughness for wall function was studied. The roughness constant, based on the law-of-the-wall for flow on rough walls, obtained by experimental works for pipe flows is employed in general wall functions. However, this constant of wall function is the function of Froude number in open channel flows. Thus, the wall roughness should be determined by taking into account the effect of Froude number. In addition, the wall roughness should be corresponding to Manning's roughness coefficient widely used for open channels. In this study, the relation between wall roughness height as an input condition and Manning's roughness coefficient was investigated, and an equation for effective wall roughness height considering the characteristics of numerical models was proposed as a function of Manning's roughness coefficient.
Nonpoint source pollution causes leaks and overtopping, depending on the state of the sewer network as well as aggravates the pollution load of the aqueous water system as it is introduced into the sewer by wash-off. According, the need for efficient sewer monitoring system which can manage the sewage flowrate, water quality, inflow/infiltration and overflow has increased for sewer maintenance and the prevention of environmental pollution. However, the sewer monitoring is not easy since the sewer network is built in underground with the complex nature of its structure and connections. Sewer decontamination mechanism as well as pipe network monitoring and fault diagnosis of water network system on system analysis proposed in this study. First, the pollution removal pattern and behavior of contaminants in the sewer pipe network is analyzed by using sewer process simulation program, stormwater & wastewater management model for expert (XP-SWMM). Second, the sewer network fault diagnosis was performed using the multivariate statistical monitoring to monitor water quality in the sewer and detect the sewer leakage and burst. Sewer decontamination mechanism analysis with static and dynamic state system results showed that loads of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) during rainfall are greatly increased than non-rainfall, which will aggravate the pollution load of the water system. Accordingly, the sewer outflow in pipe network is analyzed due to the increased flow and inflow of pollutant concentration caused by rainfall. The proposed sewer network monitoring and fault diagnosis technique can be used effectively for the nonpoint source pollution management of the urban watershed as well as continuous monitoring system.
With the recent enlargement and complication of buildings, damage caused by the incidents of fires breaking out are escalating. Consequently, the use of sprinkler facilities is increasing among water-based fire extinguishing systems. Piping materials used in fire prevention systems include carbon steel (for general or pressure pipeline), CPVC, copper, and stainless-steel. Among these, the steel and CPVC pipes, which are commonly employed in fire prevention, were considered for testing the reliability of the water-based systems. This analysis was performed using the PIPENET software to perform hydraulic calculations in order to examine the flow and pressure at the terminal head when the corrosion coefficient was applied; this coefficient was applied considering the aging of pipes. Assuming a uniform pipe diameter in the steel pipes, the rated flow in the pump installed on the first floor of the basement was reduced by over 10% after 20 years had passed (C value of 90); moreover, the reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 30% and 16.5%, respectively. The results indicate that it is difficult to ensure the reliability of these fire prevention facilities. Furthermore, according to our estimation, considering 30 years had passed (C value of 80), the rated flow of the pump was reduced by over 15%, and the corresponding reduction in pressure and flow at its terminal head exceeded 42% and 24%, respectively.

With ever rising concerns about saving of fossil fuel resource, there have been an increasing demand for use of energy more efficiently. The electric motor driven inverters can be a great help to improve energy efficiency. They are also used to control the motor speed to the actual need. Therefore the use of them can lead to reduce energy consumption. In particular, the medium voltage(MV) drive systems used for pumps, fans, steel rolling mills and tractions have widespread applications in the industry. They cover power ratings from 0.4MW to 40MW at the MV level of 2.3kV to 13.8kV. The majority of the installed MV drive systems however, are in the 1MW to 4MW range with voltage rating from 3.3kV to 6.6kV. But they are required to reduce size and weight like other power electronic equipments. In this paper, we studied on the 3.3kV(105A) compact rack type inverter system for improving the cooling efficiency. At first, we confirmed the tendency of temperature with computational simulation using ANSYS ICEPAK and actual experimental tests. And then we researched thermal performance improvement designs in order to reduce temperature of the transformer for the safe operation. It can reduce temperature of transformer that using pipe type flow guide in the system. As a result, we found out more efficient solution by thermal-fluid analysis.
One-dimensional (1D) models of incompressible flows, can be of interest for many applications in which fast resolution times are demanded, such as fluid-structure interaction of flows in compliant pipes and hemodynamics. This work proposes a higher-order 1D theory for the flow-field analysis of incompressible, laminar, and viscous fluids in rigid pipes. This methodology is developed in the domain of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), which was first employed in structural mechanics. In the framework of 1D modelling, CUF allows to express the primary variables (i.e., velocity and pressure fields in the case of incompressible flows) as arbitrary expansions of the generalized unknowns, which are functions of the 1D computational domain coordinate. As a consequence, the governing equations can be expressed in terms of fundamental nuclei, which are invariant of the theory approximation order. Several numerical examples are considered for validating this novel methodology, including simple Poiseuille flows in circular pipes and more complex velocity/pressure profiles of Stokes fluids into non-conventional computational domains. The attention is mainly focused on the use of hierarchical McLaurin polynomials as well as piece-wise nonlocal Lagrange expansions of the generalized unknowns across the pipe section. The preliminary results show the great advantages in terms of computational costs of the proposed method. Furthermore, they provide enough confidence for future extensions to more complex fluid-dynamics problems and fluid-structure interaction analysis.

Application of newly conceptualized Anti-Splash Devices designed for COT vent pipes were studied on a P/V valve located on the upper deck of an oil carrier vessel. Anti-Splash devices are used in the shipbuilding industry in order to avoid oil overflow and spray accidents caused by excess pressure and vacuum condition in the cargo oil tanks. These conditions are caused by the transverse and longitudinal sloshing forces that arise from ship motion during sea voyages. The main issue with existing Anti-Splash device model is flux at the outlet of the Anti-Splash Device, and so, new conceptual models for the Anti-Splash device were developed and compared to existing Anti-Splash device model using CFD analysis. Transient analysis was used to capture the flow and velocity of each model and a comparative analysis was performed between old and new-concept models. This data was used to determine the optimal design parameters in order to develop an optimized Anti-Splash Device. A Factory acceptance test was performed on the new-concept models in order to verify the performance and efficiency against their design requirements and other criterion. The final step performed was to apply the optimized Anti-Splash Device models for COT vent pipes to an actual vessel and verify performance through a seawater cargo operation during a sea voyage as per the ship owner's request. The patent for the aforementioned device was obtained by the Korean Intellectual property Office dated Dec. 18th,2014.
AFDA (Approximate Full Distribution Approach) model of FORM (First-Order Reliability Model) which can quantitatively calculate the probability that storm sewer reach to performance limit state was developed in this study. It was defined as a failure if amount of inflow exceed the capacity of storm sewer. Manning's equation and rational equation were used to determine the capacity and inflow of reliability function. Furthermore, statistical characteristics and distribution for the random variables were analyzed as a reliability analysis. It was found that the statistical distribution for annual maximum rainfall intensity of 10 cities in Korea is matched well with Gumbel distribution. Reliability model developed in this study was applied to Y shaped storm sewer system to calculate the probability that storm sewer may exceed the performance limit state. Probability of failure according to diameter was calculated using Manning's equation. Especially, probability of failure of storm sewer in Mungyeong and Daejeon was calculated using rainfall intensity of 50-year return period. It was found that probability of failure can be significantly increased if diameter is decreased below the original diameter. Therefore, cleaning the debris in sewer pipes to maintain the original pipe diameter should be one of the best ways to reduce the probability of failure of storm sewer. In sewer system, two sewer pipes can flow into one sewer pipe. For this case, probability of system failure was calculated using multiple failure mode. Reliability model developed in this study can be applied to design, maintenance, management, and control of storm sewer system.

Computational fluid numerical analysis using the commercial code CFX was performed to develop a Pelton turbine for a pico hydro power generator using the circulating water of a cooling tower in a large building. The performance of the Pelton turbine was examined for different design factors, such as the bucket shape, in which the Pelton wheel was connected in an appropriate manner to the pipe section, and the number of buckets in order to find the optimal design of Pelton turbine for a pico hydro power using surplus water. A benchmark test was carried out on the manufactured small scale Pelton turbine to validate the design method of the Pelton turbine by numerical analysis. The results obtained by comparing the flow characteristics and power output measured using the ultrasonic flowmeter, the pressure transducer and the oscilloscope with the numerical results confirmed the validity of the analytical design method. The possibility of developing Pelton turbines for kW class pico hydro power generators using surplus water with an average circulation velocity of 1.2 m/s for the chosen bucket shape and number of buckets in a 30 m high building was confirmed.
The importance of the dual drainage system model has increased as the urban flood damage has increased due to the increase of local storm due to climate change. The dual drainage model is a model for more accurately expressing the phenomena of surface flow and conduit flow. Surface runoff and pipe runoff are analyzed through the respective equations and parameters. And the results are expressed visually in various ways. Therefore, inundation analysis results of dual drainage model are used as important data for urban flood prevention plan. In this study, the applicability of the COBRA model, which can be interpreted by combining the dual drainage system with the natural watershed and the urban watershed, was investigated. And the results were compared with other dual drainage models (XP-SWMM, UFAM) to determine suitability of the results. For the same watershed, the XP-SWMM simulates the flooding characteristics of 3 types of dual drainage system model and the internal flooding characteristics due to the lack of capacity of the conduit. UFAM showed the lowest inundation analysis results compared with the other models according to characteristics of consideration of street inlet. COBRA showed the general result that the flooded area and the maximum flooding depth are proportional to the increase in rainfall. It is considered that the COBRA model is good in terms of the stability of the model considering the characteristics of the model to simulate the effective rainfall according to the soil conditions and the realistic appearance of the flooding due to the surface reservoir.
