A new rhodamine-based sensor 1 was designed and synthesized by incorporating rhodamine B and benzimidazole moieties. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ in $CH_3CN$-water solution (HEPES buffer, pH = 7.0) with an obvious color change from colorless to pink. Other metal ions such as $Hg^{2+}$, $Ag^+$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ce^{3+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Na^+$ had no such color change and have no significant influence on $Cu^{2+}$ recognition process. The interaction of $Cu^{2+}$ and sensor 1 was proven to adopt a 1:1 binding stoichiometry and the recognition process is reversible.

Airborne pollutants in the subway facilities can be potentially harmful to the health of passengers. This study was designed to examine whether the suspended particulates have mutagenic or carcinogenic effect on the plant cell systems. Total suspended particulates were collected with a high volume air sampler, in the entrance, the waiting room, and the platform of each subway station. The biological end -points in this experiment were the pink mutations in stamen hairs and micronuclei in the pollen mother cells of Tradescantia. The exudates were collected by shaking the filter papers from the sampler in distilled water for 24 hours. All the plant cuttings exposed to the exudates resulted in positive responses. The micronucleus assay proved more reliable and sensitive to the test than the stamen hair assay. The results indicate that the air particulates can give an adverse effect on the health of subway passengers.
The non infecting, plant associated bacteria have attracted increased attention for stimulating plant growth and as environmental friendly plant protecting agents. Pink-pigmented facultatively methylotrophic bacteria (PPFMs), classified as Methylobacterium spp., are persistent colonizers of plant leaf surfaces. As the leaves of most or all plants harbor PPFMs that utilize leaf methanol as their sole source of carbon and energy, which is a specific attribute of the genus Methylobacterium. Although they are not well known, these bacteria are co-evolved, interacting partners in plant metabolism. This claim is supported, for example, by the following observations: (1) PPFMs are seed-transmitted, (2) PPFMs are frequently found in putatively axenic cell cultures, (3) Low numbers of seed-borne PPFMs correlate with low germinability, (4) Plants with reduced numbers of PPFM show elevated shoot/root ratios, (5) Foliar application of PPFMs to soybean during pod fill enhances seed set and yield, (6) Liverwort tissue in culture requires PPFM-produced vitamin B12 for growth, (7) treated plants to suppress or decrease disease incidence of sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani in rice, and (8) the PPFM inoculation induced number of stomata, chlorophyll concentration and malic acid content, they led to increased photosynthetic activity. Methylobacterium spp. are bacterial symbionts of plants, shown previously to participate in plant metabolism by consuming plant waste products and producing metabolites useful to the plant. There are reports that inform about the beneficial interactions between this group of bacteria and plants. Screening of such kind of bacteria having immense plant growth promoting activities like nitrogen fixation, phytohormone production, alleviating water stress to the plants can be successfully isolated and characterized and integration of such kind of organism in crop production will lead to increased productivity.

The present study was conducted to test a hypothesis that pork quality traits would be influenced by the systemic and/or local bioavailability of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), transforming growth factor-${\beta}1$ (TGF-${\beta}1$), or epidermal growth factor (EGF) before or at slaughter. To this end, 60 cross-bred female market pigs weighing approximately 110 kg were slaughtered, after which Longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) samples taken at slaughter (D 0) and blood samples taken at D -7 and D 0 were analyzed. The 60 carcasses rendered 36 RFN (reddish-pink, firm, and non-exudative), 16 RSE (reddish-pink, soft, and exudative), and 6 PSE (pale, soft, and exudative); 2 DFD (dark, firm, and dry) also were found but were excluded in subsequent experiments. The $L^*$ and drip loss were greater in PSE vs. RFN and RSE and in PSE and RSE vs. RFN, respectively, as they should (P<0.05). The $pH_{45min}$ was less in PSE vs. RFN (P<0.05); $pH_{24h}$ tended to be less in the former (P=0.09). The LM IGF-I and TGF-${\beta}1$ as well as serum EGF concentrations were less in PSE than in RFN. None of the other LM and serum concentrations of the three growth factors differed across the three pork quality categories. The LM IGF-I and TGF-${\beta}1$ concentrations and serum EGF concentration at D 0 were negatively correlated with drip loss [r = -0.36(P<0.01), -0.44 (P<0.01), and -0.32 (P<0.05), respectively]. However, none of the serum and LM growth factor variables was correlated with $L^*$ or $a^*$ (redness) of LM. Taken together, results suggest that locally expressed IGF-I and TGF-${\beta}1$ and blood-borne EGF may have a beneficial effect on postmortem water holding capacity of the muscle and that pork quality traits could be predicted to some extent from concentrations of IGF-I and TGF-${\beta}1$ in muscle and EGF in serum at slaughter.

Objective: This study aimed to develop a value-added product concerning technological and sensory characteristics changes of the use of mechanically deboned poultry meat (MDPM) as meat replacer in lamb and mutton emulsion-type sausages (mortadella). Methods: Sausages were produced with lamb and mutton and with different contents of MDPM. Six treatments, using lamb or mutton and 0%, 30%, and 60% of MDPM in relation to the meat batter, were produced and analyzed for pH, proximal composition, calcium and residual nitrite content, water activity, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), instrumental color and texture profile. The sensory profile of the mortadella's was also evaluated by acceptance test and check-all-that-applies (CATA) analysis. Results: The MDPM addition increased (p<0.05) fat, residual nitrite and calcium content in the all sausage formulations, but mutton sausage had (p<0.05) higher fat and lower moisture content than lamb sausage. The pH, water activity, TBARS index and color was not affected by MDPM additions, while the mutton sausages were significantly redder (higher $a^*$, $C^*$, and lower $h^{\circ}$) and darker (lower $L^*$) than lamb sausages. Adding up to 60% of MDPM reduced (p<0.05) sausages hardness and chewiness. Overall, the meat replacement by MDPM increased the sausages acceptance, but the mutton sausage with 30% of MDPM replacer were the most preferred. Consumers related that pink color, glossy appearance, poultry meat-like taste, soft texture, juicy and greasy mouth feel to all sausages contain MDPM according to CATA analysis. Conclusion: Mutton from culled ewes can be utilized for mortadella production with 30% replacement of lean mutton and fat by MDPM.
Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants use surplus CO2 generated by cooling and heating at night when ventilation is not needed in a greenhouse. Schlumbergera truncata 'Pink Dew' is a multi-flowering cactus that needs more phylloclades for high-quality production. This study examined photosynthetic characteristics by the phylloclade levels of S. truncata in a growth chamber and a greenhouse for use of night CO2 enrichment. The CO2 uptake rate of the S. truncata's top phylloclade in a growth chamber exhibited a C3 pattern, and the second phylloclade exhibited a C3-CAM pattern. The CO2 uptake rate of the top phylloclade in a greenhouse showed a negative value both day and night, but those of the second phylloclade exhibited a CAM pattern. The stomatal conductance and water-use efficiency (WUE) of S. truncata at both the top and second phylloclades were higher in a growth chamber than in a greenhouse. The WUE of S. truncata in a growth chamber and a greenhouse was higher at the second phylloclade, which is a CAM pattern compared with those of the top phylloclade. The daily total net CO2 uptake of S. truncata was higher in a growth chamber than in a greenhouse. The daily total net CO2 uptake of S. truncata at the second phylloclade had the highest value of 155 mmol·m-2·d-1 in a growth chamber. The night total CO2 uptake of S. truncate at the second phylloclade was 3-fold higher in a growth chamber than in a greenhouse. S. truncata's second phylloclade exhibited a CAM pattern that uptake CO2 at night, and the second phylloclade, was more mature than the top phylloclade. A multi-flowering cactus S. truncata 'Pink Dew' efficiently uptake night surplus CO2 in the proper environmental condition with matured phylloclade.
In LID facilities treating stormwater runoff, various kinds of plants are applied for water circulation recovery and pollutant reduction. However, rapid changes of soil moisture due to the use of porous media and spread of deicing material during winter season cause slow plant growth that detrimentally leads to many problems including death of plants. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the salt resistance of plants, its effects on pollutants removal, and water circulation recovery. Eight different kinds of plants applicable to an LID facility were selected for the experiment, which were Bridal wreath (Spiraea japonica, S.J), Azalea (Rhododendron indicum, R.I), Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides, M.G), Sweet flag (Acorus calamus A.C), Dwarf fan-shape columbine(Aquilegia flabellata, A.F), Pink (Dianthus chinensis, D.C), Pratia pedunculata (Pratia pedunculata, P.B) and Marigold (Tagetes patula, T.P). Woody plants such as S.P, R.I, and M.G appear to have less salt resistance compared to the other herbaceous plants. Specifically, M.G achieved the highest salt resistance among the other woody plants being followed by S.P, and R.I, respectively. For herbaceous plants, T.L and D.C have the higher salt resistances than that of A.C, P.B, and A.F, respectively. Regardless of the influence of salt to most of the plants, TN and TP were reduced more than 60% and the study suggests the M.G showed high pollutant removal efficiency and provided better water circulation by means of active photosynthesis and respiration due to higher growth.
Anthocyanins are water soluble plant pigments which are responsible for the blue, red, pink, violet colors in several plant organs such as flowers, fruits, leaves and roots. In recent years, anthocyanin-rich foods have been favored as dietary supplements and health care products due to diverse biological activities of anthocyanins including antioxidant, anti-allergic, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-cancer and preventing cardiovascular disease. High-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC) coupled with reversed-phase medium pressure liquid chromatography (RP MPLC) method was applied for the rapid and efficient isolation of cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) and peonidin 3-glucoside (P3G) from black rice (Oryza sativa L., Poaceae). The crude black rice extract (500 mg) was subjected to HPCCC using two-phase solvent system composed of tert-butyl methyl ether/n-butanol/ acetonitrile/0.01% trifluoroacetic acid (TBME/B/A/0.01% TFA, 1 : 3 : 1 : 5, v/v, flow rate - 4.5 mL/min, reversed phase mode) to give enriched anthocyanin extract (37.4 mg), and enriched anthocyanin extract was sequentially chromatographed on RP-MPLC to yield C3G (16.5 mg) and P3G (8.7 mg). The recovery rate and purity of isolated C3G were 76.0% and 98.2%, respectively, and those of P3G were 58.3% and 96.3%, respectively. The present study indicates that HPCCC coupled with RP-MPLC method is more rapid and efficient than multi-step conventional column chromatography for the separation of anthocyanins.
The proximate composition and physicochemical properties of three cultivars of Korean kidney bean sediments, Pink (PKB), Red (RKD) and White (WKB) were compared. No significant differences in the proximate composition and calorie were noticed among three samples. Sediment granule was oval/round and rough in all samples. The amylograms showed no peak and continuous increase of viscosity during heating. The water-binding capacities of the sediments were 322.4∼355.0%. The swelling power and solubility were 5.93∼6.68% and 3.76∼5.28%, respectively. The percent transmittances of the sediment suspension decreased linearly from 50$^{\circ}$∼75$^{\circ}C$. The gelatinization temperature and gelatinization enthalpy determined by DSC (Differential Scanning Caloriemeter) were much lower than those of starches.

t-$ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$composites having a superior biocompatability and phase stability were prepared by adding 0~4 mol% of $Eu_2O_3$and sintered for 1 h at $1600^{\circ}C$ to evaluate phase stability, chromaticity and mechanical properties of the composites. No tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation was observed for the composites containing $Eu_2O_3$after heat treatment for 20 h at $180^{\circ}C$ under 3.5 MPa water vapor pressure condition. As $Eu_2O_3$content increased, the color of the composites was changed from a slight white ivory to a light pink. The strength and the fracture toughness of the composites containing $Eu_2O_3$were above 620 MPa and 7.6 MPa.$m^{1/2}$, respectively, when $Eu_2O_3$was added up to 3 mol%.
