A Study on the Recognition of Effectiveness and Safety of the Helicopter Aerial Fire Attack (헬기에 의한 산불공중진화 효과 및 안전성 인식 연구)

  • Forest fires were easy to be larger in Korea. So the utilization of aircrafts, especially helicopters, for forest fire attack would be increased gradually. In the forest fire attack process, the improvement of the helicopter aerial fire attack technique and safety were the chief element for efficient forest fire attack. In this study, we surveyed the recognition of pilots who worked in Forest Aviation Office which was responsible for aerial forest fire attack in Korea. Using these survey results, we suggested more efficient and safer method for aerial fire fighting based on actual experience of air attack at the scene of forest fire burning.

Design of Aircraft Internal On-glass Antennas (항공기용 내장형 온-글래스 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose an aircraft on-glass antenna for FM radio reception. To obtain broad matching bandwidth, we employed a multiple loop as the basic antenna structure, and the shape of the loops mimics the frame of a window in order to ensure pilots' field of view as large as possible. The detailed design parameters of the multi-loop structure were determined using a Pareto genetic algorithm with a full wave EM simulation tool. The optimized on-glass antenna was built and installed on a Korean utility helicopter (KUH) The measurement results showed a half power matching bandwidth of about 63.3 %, average vertical bore-sight gain of about -12.98 dBi in the FM band.

  • Fabrication of human powered aircraft and flight test procedure for pilot training are included in this paper. To meet the weight requirement, very light materials such as carbon fiber and PVC foam are used and the final weight was 41.5kg. Ninety two times of flight test were done at Goheung Aviation Test Center from August to September 2012. When KARI were lack of know-how about human powered aircraft, damages on the aircraft were very frequent. After knowing how to fly and to control, one of two pilots was finally successful in flying further to 240m in the Human Powered Aircraft Contest.

On the occurrence of yellow sand and atmospheric loadings (황사의 사례분석과 한반도 유입량)

  • The phenomenon of yellow sand (dust clouds) occurred in Korea during the spring of 1993 and 1994 is studied in detail. In total 6 cases including 15 days of yellow sand were observed in 1993 and the annual number of these events was found to increased. Examinations in this study include meteorological charts satellite imagery, pilot reports (PIREP) of Korea Air Force, and air concentrations of total suspended particulates(TSP). We present on estimation of total atmospheric loadings based on the observation and theory. According to the PIREP, in general the dust clouds travelled in the lower troposphere up to the level 5km. The visibility within the clouds was in the range of 3-8km The area covered by yellow sand in an event exceeded 0.4 M $\textrm{km}^2$ . According to trajectory analyses, dust clouds invaded Korea in April and May 1993 were landed in the sink area after 2~4 days travelling for 2,000~3,000km from a source region. Estimates of total atmospheric loadings of a dust cloud for April 23~24 in 1993 were 1.5 M ton. In addition, 7 dust storms were also reported in synoptic observations in NW China and Mongolia during the spring in 1994. The yellow sand was not reported with meteorological observations in Korea, however pilots reported significant dust clouds over the Yellow Sea on 8 and 13 April and 20 May 1994.

  • In this paper, we propose a voice instruction-based takeoff system for aircraft including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The system consists of voice recognition (VR), flight state checking and instruction (command) execution. Employing VR technology, the proposed takeoff system can provide simplified and more reliable takeoff procedures to pilots. By virtue of the VR-based system it is expected that human errors during takeoff phase can be reduced and further navigation safety can be improved.

A Quantitative Marine Traffic Safety Assessment of the Vung Tau Waterway

  • Marine traffic safety of the Vung Tau Waterway, from port limit to Ganh Rai Gulf, plays a crucial role in the economic development of the important triangular economic zone in the south of Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. This paper uses the IWRAP Mk2 program to assess marine traffic safety and shows that in the area there are three parts of fairway have highest risk of collision (from buoys No. 8-9 to buoys No. 1-2 of the Song Dinh fairway; from buoy No. 0 to buoys No. 8-9 and from buoys No. 6-9 to buoys No. 8-9A of the Sai Gon-Vung Tau fairway) and the two areas have highest risk of grounding (the Vung Tau coastline from Ganh Hao to Sao Mai and an area in the Ganh Rai Gulf). In addition, the result of a questionnaire survey on a group of Pilots shows that wind, current and rain/fog have considerable negative effect to ship handling of large vessels in this area. This paper's results will be used in the further research to discover solutions for improving marine traffic safety in the Vung Tau Waterway.

  • In this paper, we propose the channel estimation for the space time coded-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ST-OFDM) muti-input multi-output (MIMO) system with comb type pilot arrangements. In the conventional method, specially constructed pilots are inserted in the OFDM symbols at all transmit antennas separately. The proposed algorithm multiplies the orthogonal code to be transmitted OFDM symbols to estimate channels at the receiver. This algorithm can estimate a long channel delay with high accuracy. It is proved by computer simulations.

  • One of the most important works in the development of military aircraft is to construct and utilize the various technical data and information needed in the design, analysis and evaluation under integrated system structure. A vast and various data in oder to optimize cockpit design is needed in geometric & arrangement design, vision analysis and escape system design. In addition, the application of ergonomics cockpit design concept based on the sorts of human elements and anthropometric data as design consideration for pilots is required. To accomplish above these activities, the data gathered and formed through the aircraft development program was become database and developed by tool to be able to support ergonomics cockpit design work.

An Exploratory Study For the Social Feasibility Of the Dredging the Water-Depth of Busan Port (부산항 컨테이너터미널의 증심준설에 관한 사회적 타당성 분석을 위한 탐색적 연구)

  • As the containership has been large-sized, it is important to analyze the social feasibility for the dredging the water-depth of Busan port. We tries to do an exploratory study to analyze the needs of the core port user group by using the survey methodology. We did the survey for the ocean carriers, terminal operating companies, ship pilots respectively. Collected data was analyzed by frequency and cross tabulation method. Result suggests that the Busan North Port should be dredged to the 16 meter depth and Busan New Port should be dredged to the 17 meter depth. And the priority of the depth dredging is ranked as Gamman pier, Sinsundae pier, New Port and Jasungdae pier.

Studies on Synchronization Techniques for Power Saving of DVB-H Terminal (DVB-H 수신기의 전력소모감소를 위한 동기화 기법에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we proposed new fast scattered pilot synchronization techniques to reduce the burst synchronization time for the DVB-H receiving system with robustness. DVB-H terminals employ a TDM system called 'Time-Slicing' to reduce power consumption. In order to fully exploit the potential power reduction, the synchronization time for the DVB-H receiver must be very short. A typical DVB-T system uses the TPS Synchronization to determine the position of scattered pilots which are used for channel estimation, and it takes 68 OFDM symbol time. In this paper, several new fast scattered pilot synchronization techniques are proposed.
