Rearing managements of pig farms and survey on pneumonia of slaughtered pigs (양돈장 사양관리와 도축돈 폐 병변조사)

  • This studies were carried out to investigate the rearing managements of pig farms and survey on pneumonia of the slaughtered pigs from 5 selected herds located in Jangsu, Jeonbuk. Isolated aerobic microorganisms from pneumonic lung were examined antibiotic susceptibility and tested serological antibody titers of the herd base. Prevalence rate of pneumonia were examined according to rearing and health management conditions of pig farms. Prevalence rate of pneumonia were detected in 78.8% and enzotic pneumonia. In 47.7%, pleuropneurnonia in 31.1%. In serological antibody titers showed the positive reaction with 54.4% in Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia serotype 5, 44.8% in Pasteurella multocida, 36.8% in A pleuropneurnonia serotype 2, 13.6% in Mycoplasmal pneumonia. Isolated aerobic microorganisms were examined antibiotic susceptibility and showed the high activity in gentamicin (58.3%), enrofloxacin (53.3%), norfloxacin (51.6%), cephalothin (41.7%) and low activity in amoxycillin (98.3%), oxytetracycline (98.3%), penicillin G (90.0 %), tetracycline (88.4%), ampicillin (88.3%). Farm managements were deficient effect of humidity in swine house but ammonia gas all appeared the 10 ppm that were recommendation density, below.

Cutaneous melanocytic tumor in a slaughtered pig (도축돈에서 발생한 피부 멜라닌 세포성 종양)

  • A 7-month-old brown pig with a discoid and pedunculate mass measuring $14.0{\times}12.5{\times}2.5cm$ on the skin of the right shoulder was noted at the slaughter house in Jeju. The surface of mass approximately $7{\times}4cm$ was interfaced with skin. The color of mass with firm consistency was mainly black and partially white on cut surface. Histopathologically, numerous unencapsulated endocrine-like cellular nodules of epithelioid cell type with abundant intracytoplasmic black pigment, melanin, were occupied in dermis and subcutis. Most of nodules in deep dermis were surrounded by lightly pigmented spindle cells and loose fibrous tissues. Mitotic figures were infrequently observed. The overlying epidermis was hyperplastic due to the down-growth of rete peg. Based on the gross and histopathologic findings, this case was diagnosed as cutaneous melanoma. In our best knowledge, this is the first case of swine cutaneous melanoma in Korea.

Survey of Swine Parasitic Infection Rate in Iri Area (이리지방 돼지의 내부기생충 감염실태 조사)

  • To investigate the swine parasitic infection rate, we performed centrifugal floatation method and sedimentation method between Jan. 1989. and Dec. 1989. This results are shown as follows. 1. The numbers of infection were 593 pigs in 1080, shown 54.9% of infection rate. 2. In this survey, eight species of swine parasite were detected. The percentage of Balantidium coli was 44.5, revealed hightest level. There were 14.5% in Ascaris suum and 11.8% in Oesophagostomum SP respectively. 3. In this survey, there was high rate(86.0%) of parasitic infection in the pig raised at sawdust fermantation house. This results suggest that pig maybe liable to infect parasite.

  • The so-called northern Agricultural Engineering of Farmer's courtyard Energy Ecological System is a courtyard-type energy ecological synthetic application system, that combines into one the biogas pool, pig house, toilet and plastic -membrane greenhouse in a fully-closed condition in farmer's court yard, a combination of farming with breeding industry, with bioga as the key linkage , by taking full advantage of solar energy and through bioenergy conversion technique in accordance with ecological principle.

Effect of Semi-Dry Anaerobic Digestion Using Dairy Cattle Manure and Pig Slurry (젖소 분과 돈분 슬러리를 이용한 반 건식 혐기소화 효과)

  • Semi-dry anaerobic digestion experiment using dairy cattle manure collected from dairy cattle house was conducted to analyze efficiency of biogas production. As a first experiment, Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) test was carried out according to certain ratio of sample mixtures: dairy cattle manure, pig slurry, and mixture of dairy cattle manure and pig slurry. The amount of methane accumulated during BMP test period was high in the experimental groups containing dairy cattle manure. As a second experiment, semi-dry anaerobic digestion experiment was carried out using only the dairy cattle manure collected from floor of the dairy cattle house. Judging from the experimental results, the optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) of semi-dry anaerobic digestion for dairy cattle manure containing 13% of TS was 25 days. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 13% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.36~1.50v/v-d and the average was 1.44v/v-d. The optimum HRT of the semi-dry anaerobic digestor for dairy cattle manure containing TS of 15% and the semi-dry anaerobic digestor for dairy cattle manure containing TS of 17% was the same as 30 days. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 15% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.42~1.52v/v-d and the average was 1.47v/v-d. The amount biogas generated from the semi-dry anaerobic digestor with the TS of 17% of the dairy cattle manure ranged from 1.50~1.61v/v-d and the average was 1.55v/v-d.

  • This paper deals with the distribution, reservoir and mode of spread of salmonella infection on 7 pig farms in Taegu, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam and Chungnam and a slaughter house in Teagu during the period from May 1984 to May 1985. Isolated salmonella were examined for serotypes and biotyping of S. typhimurium. The results obtained were summarised as follows; 1. Of total 7,995 samples from 7 pig farms and a slaughter house, 319 salmonella were isolated from 234 samples (2.9%) and their serovar strains were S. derby 77, S. infantis 41, S. enteritidis 20, S. typhimurium 18, S. bredeney 16, S. london 14, S. paratyphi B 9, S. anatum 8, S. montevideo 8, S. senftenberg 7, S. thompson 6, S. pullorum 4, S. paratyphi A 1 and untypable 70. 2. The incidence rate of diarrhea of piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs was 9.8%, 2.3% and 0.5%, respectively whereas the rate by salmonella infection was 4.2%, 1.2% and 11.3%, respectively. 3. The isolation rate of salmonella was higher in summer and autumn. 4. The isolation rate of salmonella varied from 1.1% to 4.5% in 7 pig farms, it was higher in sewages(4.4%), weaned pigs(3.7%), boars(3.7%) and other(3.7%) included soils, manure and wild rats according to samples. Three out of 7 pig farms were contaminated heavily with various serovars of salmonella. 5. The isolation rate of salmonella from pigs slaughtered was 8.1%, it was 13.6% in rectal contents and 1.6% in mensenteric lymph nodes. 6. Eighteen strains of S. typhimurium were classified into 3 different biovars(1, 10 and 10a) by the method of Brandis and were subdivided into 6 different full biovars(1a, 1d, 1dh, 3d, 26i and 26ei) by the method described by Duguid et al. Appearance of different biovars indicated the occurrence of different exotic infection sources on the farms.

Survey of porcine proliferative enteritis for the pig farms in Gyeongnam district (경남지역 양돈장의 돼지증식성회장염 감염률에 대한 연구)

  • Porcine proliferative enteritis (PPE) is a transmissible gastroenteric disease caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. Clinically, PPE causes hemorrhagic diarrhea and sometimes death in growing pigs, but when the disease progresses to a chronic phase, the infected pig no longer displays significant symptoms. The purpose of the present studies were carried out to determine L. intracellularis in the pig farms and slaughter house, in Gyeongnam area. A survey of proliferative enteritis in pig was conducted using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing method, total 1,495 samples. PCR products showed a specific band at the 210bp, 329bp in the specimens of feces and mucosal scraping. Of 420 fecal specimens, 113 (26.9%) were identified as positive to PPE. Of 1,075 mucosal scraping specimens, 109 (10.1%) were identified as positive to PPE. Of total 1,495 specimens, 222 (14.8%) were identified as positive to PPE.

Monitoring of Internal Harmful Factors According to Environmental Factors in Pig Farm (양돈장 내의 환경 요인에 따른 내부 유해인자의 변동 모니터링)

  • With the decrease of the agricultural population in Korea, the workers who is vulnerable to labor are increasing in agricultural industry because of aging, feminization of population. They are exposed in poor working environment with higher temperature and concentrations of dust, gas. Higher concentration of harmful gas and dust can cause chronic and acute disease to workers depending on exposure intensity and frequency. In order to improve the working environment in the livestock facilities, It is important to secure monitoring data of the thermal environment and the concentration of harmful gases and fine dust. Multi-point measurement was performed to analyze the regional environmental conditions in the pig rooms. When analyzing the working environment, video monitoring was conducted to analyze the concentration changes of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and fine dust according to worker movement and work type. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide monitoring result showed 1.5~2 times higher concentrations than other work when working in the pigs living zone, and 2~4 times higher than other work when working to increase the activity of pigs. In the case of fine dust, the result was 1.3 times higher than the worker's exposure standard in a specific work. The concentrations of gases and dusts from pig farms are not of concern for acute poisoning in normal work, but there is a risk of chronic respiratory disease if they are continuously exposed. Accordingly, there is a need for development of work environment monitoring device tailored to workers and preparation of alternatives.

Analysis of Changing Pattern of Noxious Gas Levels with Malodorous Substance Concentrations in Individual Stage of Pig Pens for 24 hrs to Improve Piggery Environment (돈사환경 개선을 위한 생육단계별 돈사내 악취물질 농도 및 유해가스의 1일 변화추세 분석)

  • Noxious gases with malodorous substance concentrations in each stages of pig buildings were determined at a typical 400sow-scale farm to improve piggery environment. Using IAQ-300 and pDR-1000AN, continuous records for the concentration of $NH_3$, CO, $CO_2$, $NO_2$, $SO_2$, $H_2S$, $O_2$, and along with temperature, humidity, dust concentrates from individual pig pens were collected to analyze every 6 hours' condition of indoor environment for 24 hours' period. In most pig houses, the air quality at noon was good, while at night (00:00~06:00), air composition became noxious in all buildings. The order of buildings' air quality for 24 hrs was pregnant > farrowing > nursery > growing > finishing. The cause of air quality differences was presumed to be the differences of stocking density, defecating amount and the length of exposure time of slurry in indoors. In conclusion, well-designed building structure, proper control of stocking density, quick removal of excreta from pig pens and continuous ventilation are prerequisites to improve pig housing environment.

Estimation of Particulate Matter and Ammonia Emission Factors for Mechanically-Ventilated Pig Houses (강제환기식 양돈시설의 암모니아 및 미세먼지 배출계수 산정)

  • Emission factors for ammonia and particulate matters (PMs) from livestock buildings are of increasing importance in view of the environmental protection. While the existing emission factors were determined based on the emission inventory of other countries, in situ measurement of emission factors is required to construct an accurate emission inventory for Korea. This study is to report measurements of ammonia and PMs emissions from mechanically-ventilated pig houses, which are common types of pig barns in Korea. Ventilation rates and concentrations of ammonia and PMs were measured at the ventilation outlets of a weaner unit, a growing pig unit and a fattening pig unit to calculated the emission factors. The PMs emission was characterized with different aerodynamic diameters (PM2.5, PM10, and total suspended particulates (TSP)). The measured ammonia emission factors for weaners, growing pigs and fattening pigs were 0.225, 0.869 and 1.679 kg animal-1 yr-1, respectively, showing linear increase with pigs' age. The PMs emission factors for three growing stages were 0.023, 0.237 and 0.241 kg animal-1 yr-1, respectively for TSP, 0.017, 0.072 and 0.223 kg animal-1 yr-1, respectively for PM10, and 0.011, 0.016 and 0.151 kg animal-1 yr-1, respectively for PM2.5. PMs emissions were increased with pigs' age due to increasing feed supply and animal movement. The measured emission factors were smaller than those of the existing emission inventory indicating that the existing ones overestimate the emissions from pig buildings and also suggesting that long-term in situ monitoring at various livestock buildings is required to construct the accurate emission inventory.
