In this paper we deal with the problem of recovering 3-D motion and structure from a time-varying 2-D velocity vector field. A great deal has been done on this topic, most of which has concentrated on finding necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be a unique 3-D solution corresponding to a given 2-D motion. While previous work provides useful theoretical insight, in most situations the known algorithms have turned out to be too sensitive to be of much practical use. It appears that any robust algorithm must improve the 3-D solutions over time. As a step toward such algorithm, we present a method for recovering 3-D motion and structure from a given time-varying 2-D velocity vector field. The surface of the object in the scene is assumed to be locally planar. It is also assumed that 3-D velocity vectors are piecewise constant over three consecutive frames (or two snapshots of flow field). Our formulation relates 3-D motion and object geometry with the optical flow vector as well as its spatial and temporal derivatives. The linearization parameters, or equivalently, the first-order flow approximation (in space and time) is sufficient to recover rigid body motion and local surface structure from the local instantaneous flow field. We also demonstrate, through a sensitivity analysis carried out for synthetic and natural motions in space, that 3-D motion can be recovered reliably.
A method for dynamic analysis and design calculation of a Powertrain Mounting System(PMS) including Hydraulic Engine Mounts(HEM) is developed with the aim of controlling powertrain motion and reducing low-frequency vibration in pitch and bounce modes. Here the pitch mode of the powertrain is defined as the mode rotating around the crankshaft of an engine for a transversely mounted powertrain. The powertrain is modeled as a rigid body connected to rigid ground by rubber mounts and/or HEMs. A mount is simplified as a three-dimensional spring with damping elements in its Local Coordinate System(LCS). The relation between force and displacement of each mount in its LCS is usually nonlinear and is simplified as piecewise linear in five ranges in this paper. An equation for estimating displacements of the powertrain center of gravity(C.G.) under static or quasi-static load is developed using Newton's second law, and an iterative algorithm is presented to calculate the displacements. Also an equation for analyzing the dynamic response of the powertrain under ground and engine shake excitations is derived using Newton's second law. Formulae for calculating reaction forces and displacements at each mount are presented. A generic PMS with four rubber mounts or two rubber mounts and two HEMs are used to validate the dynamic analysis and design calculation methods. Calculated displacements of the powertrain C.G. under static or quasi-static loads show that a powertrain motion can meet the displacement limits by properly selecting the stiffness and coordinates of the tuning points of each mount in its LCS using the calculation methods developed in this paper. Simulation results of the dynamic responses of a powertrain C.G. and the reaction forces at mounts demonstrate that resonance peaks can be reduced effectively with HEMs designed on the basis of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we consider a Bayesian analysis of the dose-effect relationship of cadmium to evaluate a benchmark dose(BMD). For this purpose, two dose-response curves commonly used in the toxicity study are fitted based on Bayesian methods to the data collected from the scientific literature on cadmium toxicity. Specifically, Bayesian meta-analysis and hierarchical modeling build an overall dose-effect relationship that use a piecewise linear model and Hill model, where the inter-study heterogeneity and inter-individual variability of dose and effect such as gender, age and ethnicity are accounted. Estimation of the unknown parameters is made by using a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm based user-friendly software WinBUGS. Benchmark dose estimates are evaluated for various cut-offs and compared with different tested subpopulations with with gender, age and ethnicity based on these two Bayesian hierarchical models.

A general formulation for shape design sensitivity analysis over three dimensional beam structure is developed based on a variational formulation of the beam in linear elasticity. Sensitivity formula is derived based on variational equations in cartesian coordinates using the material derivative concept and adjoint variable method for the displacement and Von-Mises stress functionals. Shape variation is considered for the beam shape in general 3-dimensional direction as well as for the orientation angle of the beam cross section. In the sensitivity expression, the end points evaluation at each beam segment is added to the integral formula, which are summed over the entire structure. The sensitivity formula can be evaluated with generality and ease even by employing piecewise linear design velocity field despite the bending model is fourth order differential equation. For the numerical implementation, commercial software ANSYS is used as analysis tool for the primal and adjoint analysis. Once the design variable set is defined using ANSYS language, shape and orientation variation vector at each node is generated by making finite difference to the shape with respect to each design parameter, and is used for the computation of sensitivity formula. Several numerical examples are taken to show the advantage of the method, in which the accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated. The results are found excellent even by employing a simple linear function for the design velocity evaluation. Shape optimization is carried out for the geometric design of an archgrid and tilted bridge, which is to minimize maximum stress over the structure while maintaining constant weight. In conclusion, the proposed formulation is a useful and easy tool in finding optimum shape in a variety of the spatial frame structures.
It is usual that underground structures are constructed within a multi-layered medium. In this paper, an efficient numerical modelling of multi-layered structural systems is studied using coupled analysis of finite elements and boundary elements. The finite elements are applied to the area in which the material nonlinearity dominates, and the boundary elements are applied to the far field where the nonlinearity is relatively weak. In the boundary element modelling of the multi-layered medium, fundamental solutions are not readily available. Thus, methods which can utilize existing Kelvin solutions are sought for the interior multi-layered domain problem. The interior domain problem which has piecewise homogeneous layers is analyzed using boundary elements with Kelvin solution, by discretizing each homogeneous subdomain and enforcing compatibility and equilibrium conditions between interfaces. Developed methodology is verified by comparing its results with those from the finite element analysis and it is concluded that coupled analysis using boundary elements and finite elements can be reasonable and efficient.

An investigation has been performed to develop an analysis tool based on a nonlinear beam theory, which can be used to predict the long-term behavior of an artificial hip joint. The nonlinear behav ior of the femur arise from the coupled dependence of the bone density and the mechanical properties on each other. The beam theory together with its numerical algorithm is developed to take into account the nonlinear bone remodeling process of the femur that is long enough to be assumed as a beam. A piecewise linear curve for the bone remodeling rate is used in the bone remodeling theory and the surface area density of bone is modeled as the third order polynomial function of bone density. At each section of the beam, a constant curvature is assumed and the longitudinal strains are also assumed to vary linearly across the section. The Newton-Rhapson iteration method is used to solve the nonlinear equations for each cross section of the bone and a backward method is used to march along the time. The density and the remodeling signal ar, calculated along with time for the various time steps, and the developed beam theory has been verified by comparing with the results of finite element analysis of a remodeling bone with an artificial hip joint of titanium prosthesis subjected to uni-axial loads and pure bending moment. It is concluded that the developed beam theory can be used to predict the long-term behavior of the femur and thus to design the artificial hip prosthesis.
This Paper presents the development of multiresolution model for the analysis and visualization of two-dimensional flows over curvilinear grids. Multiresolution analysis provides a useful and efficient tool to represent shape and to analyze features at multiple level of detail. Applying multiresolution analysis to vector field visualization is very useful and powerful as the vector field's data sets are usually huge and complex. Using approximation at lower resolution, brief outline of topology can be extracted in short periods of time. Local reconstruction allows the user to zoom in or out, only by reconstructing the portion of interest. This new model is based upon nested spaces of piecewise defined function over nested curvilinear grid domains. The nested domains are selected so as to maintain the original geometry of the inner boundary. This paper presents the refinement and decomposition equations for Haar wavelet over these domains and shows some examples.
This study contributes to understanding women's labor market behavior by focusing on a particular set of labor force transitions - labor force withdrawal and entry during the period surrounding the first birth of a child. In particular, this study provides a dynamic analyses, using longitudinal data and event history analysis, to conceptualize labor force behaviors in a straightforward way. The main research question addresses which factors increase or decrease the hazard rates of leaving and entering the labor market. This study used piecewise Gompertz model, following the guide of the non-parametric analysis on the hazard rates, which allowed relatively detailed description on the distribution of timing of leave and entry to the labor market as parameters of interest. The results show that preferences and structural variables, as well as economic considerations, are very important factors to explain the labor market behavior of women in the period surrounding childbirth.

A remeshing algorithm using tetrahedral elements has been developed, which is adapted to the mesh density map constructed by a posteriori error estimation. In the finite element analyses of metal forging processes, numerical error increases as deformation proceeds due to severe distortion of elements. In order to reduce the numerical error, the desired mesh sizes in each region of the workpiece are calculated by a posteriori error estimation and the density map is constructed. Piecewise density functions are then constructed with the radial basis function in order to interpolate the discrete data of the density map. The sample mesh is constructed based on the point insertion technique which is adapted to the density function and the mesh size is controlled by moving and deleting nodes to obtain optimal distribution according to the mesh density function and the quality optimization function as well. After finishing the redistribution process of nodes, a tetrahedral mesh is constructed with the redistributed nodes, which is adapted to the density map and resulting in good mesh quality. A goodness and adaptability of the constructed mesh is verified with a testing measure. The proposed remeshing technique is applied to the finite element analyses of forging processes.

This paper presents the subparametric finite element model formulated by partial-linear layerwise theory for the analysis of laminate composites. The proposed model is based on refined approximations of two dimensional plane for orthotropic thick laminate plate as well as thin case. Three dimensional problem can be reduced to two dimensional case by assuming piecewise linear variation of in-plane displacement and a constant value of out-of-plane displacement across the thickness. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are chosen to define displacement fields and Gauss-Lobatto numerical integration is implemented in order to directly obtain maximum values occurred at the nodal points of each layer without other extrapolation techniques. The validity and characteristics of the proposed model have been tested by using orthotropic multilayered plate problem as compared to the values available in the published references. In this study, the convergence test has been carried out to determine the optimal layer model in terms of central deflection and stresses. Also, the distribution of displacements and stresses across the thickness has been investigated as the number of layer is increased.
