  • Physiological signals provide important clues in the diagnosis and prediction of disease. Analyzing these signals is important in health and medicine. In particular, data preprocessing for physiological signal analysis is a vital issue because missing values, noise, and outliers may degrade the analysis performance. In this paper, we propose PhysioCover, a system that can recover missing values of physiological signals that were monitored in real time. PhysioCover integrates a gradual method and EM-based Principle Component Analysis (PCA). This approach can (1) more readily recover long- and short-term missing data than existing methods, such as traditional EM-based PCA, linear interpolation, 5-average and Missing Value Singular Value Decomposition (MSVD), (2) more effectively detect hidden variables than PCA and Independent component analysis (ICA), and (3) offer fast computation time through real-time processing. Experimental results with the physiological data of an intensive care unit show that the proposed method assigns more accurate missing values than previous methods.

  • Purpose: It is recently reported that the increasing noise in the hospitals has caused psychological and physiological stress problems with patients, and medical staffs. This study intends to investigate and analyze the noise levels in the sub stations in comparison with those in the wards in general. This study tries also to find some alterative solutions to the immediate problems. Methods: Noise measurements are conducted in advance prior to analyzing their results at two general hospitals with more than 900 beds, in the comprehensive nursing service wards and in the main/ sub stations located in the general wards Results: Although the noise level in the comprehensive nursing service wards has been slightly lower than that in the general wards, this result is over the recommended noise levels. Therefore it is recommended that efforts should be made to low down the noise level as an alternative and to replace the aged carts as well. Implications: The comprehensive nursing service wards are required to take measures against the various noise sources.

  • In this paper, a method for the improvement of learning speed and convergence rate was proposed applied it to physiological neural structure with the advantages of artificial neural networks and fuzzy theory to physiological neuron structure, To compare the proposed method with conventional the single layer perception algorithm, we applied these algorithms bit parity problem and pattern recognition containing noise. The simulation result indicated that our learning algorithm reduces the possibility of local minima more than the conventional single layer perception does. Furthermore we show that our learning algorithm guarantees the convergence.

  • Blood flow is one of vital signals related to human physiological information. Photoplethysmograph (PPG) has been used to measure indirectly heart rate, blood oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$), and so on. Because PPG signal is weak and sensitive to motion artifacts, it is very important to continuously obtain stable PPG signal during free movement. In this study, we applied the scaled Fourier linear combiner (SFLC) using both the adaptive filter and FLC to remove effectively the motion artifacts as well as background noise in the real time without additional signal correlated with motion from a accelerometer. The proposed method would be useful to reduce the movement and background noise which are not synchronized with heart rate.

  • Previous studies reported that exposure to noise during pregnancy adversely influenced the development of the fetus and neonate. In Oriental medicine, medications based on Angelicae gigantis radix have been known to be of efficacy in the treatment of various diseases. c-Fos, an immediate early gene whose expression is sometimes used as a marker for stimulus-induced changes in the metabolic activity of neurons. In the present study, the influence of postnatal Angelicae gigantis radix administration on c-Fos expression in the each region of hippocampus of offspring rats with prenatal noise stress during pregnancy was investigated. From the present results, exposure to the prenatal stress during pregnancy enhanced c-Fox expression, whereas exposure to postnatal Angelice gigantis radix suppressed c-Fos expression in the offsprings with prenatal noise stress during pregnancy. Based on the present study, Angelicae gigantis radix may provide new therapeutic opportunities as an agent to counteract the effects of prenatal noise stress- induced hippocampal dysfunction, and may be useful in the treatment of psychiatric problems in children of mothers who have experienced noise stress during pregnancy.

  • Recently, noise has been regarded as one of the most notorious and frequent environmental pollutions which can be often encountered not only in the living space but also in the industrial site. Studies on physiological and psychological effects of long-term noise exposure to human being have commanded the public interest on noise issues. Since environmental noises such as traffic noise and construction noise is mainly flowed through the open window, it is necessary to develop the active noise control system to reduce it inside the building. Although control speakers and microphones for the noise signal measurement in the control region are essential for the conventional active noise control methods, it is impossible to implement them in the control region in the building environment because the control region is the living quarter and they may hinder activities of the residents. Therefore, we proposed the active window system to reduce the exterior noise flowed through the open window with microphones installed outside the window and control speakers installed at the frame of the window. To confirm the performance of the proposed active window, we carried out the simulation and experiment using active window system with 8 control speakers. Simulation results showed the noticeable noise reduction effect inside the control region within the frequency range without the spatial aliasing. Experimental result showed that the total acoustic potential energy inside the room of the scale model is reduced to about 10dB within the interest of frequency range.
