Background: Workplace violence was recognized to be social problems that might impact the health status and the job satisfaction of employee in hospitals. This study investigated the current status of violence and job stress among hospital employees working at administration and discharging department. Methods: The study subjects were 213 administrative employees working at 20 general hospitals. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire that included information such as demographics, job-related characteristics, experience of violence, and job stress. The violence was classified as verbal violence, physical threat, and physical violence occurred by patients and caregivers. Analysis of variance, t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine the associated factors with job stress. Results: The levels of verbal violence, physical threat, and physical violence were $1.64{\pm}1.08$, $0.54{\pm}0.67$, and $0.04{\pm}0.17$, respectively. The score of job stress was $2.74{\pm}0.50$ and it was associated with age, existence of spouse, drinking frequency, subjective health status, disease history, night-time treatment, and public health administration career in simple analysis. In multiple linear regression analysis, the level of verbal violence experience was significantly associated with job stress (B=0.09, p=0.001). Also physical threats (B=0.18, p<0.001) and physical violence (B=0.48, p=0.008) showed positive association with job stress. Conclusion: This study attempted to examine the association between experience of violence and job stress in administrative employees at medical institutions. Levels of violence showed positive correlation with the job stress. Environment improvement to protect employee from violence and management of employees who experienced workplace violence are needed to reduce the job stress.

The study was carried out to investigate how the refining of pulps affects the stress-strain characteristics and physical properties of paper. SwBKP and HwBKP were refined with Hollender laboratory beater to obtain three levels of freeness(500, 400 and 300 ml CSF) at the different consistencies(0.5% and 1.0%). The effects of fines were also evaluated. The stresses and strains of papers made from SwBKP and HwBKP were increased with refining. The absolute value of strain in paper made from SwBKP was higher than those of paper made from HwBKP. We also found that the presence of fines increased the stress and strain significantly in both pulp types. The refining at lower pulp consistency gave higher stress and strain properties. Most physical properties of paper were improved with refining, but the effect of refining consistency depended on the characteristics of each physical properties.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of an infant massage on physical growth and stress response in preterm babies. Method: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest design was used with 56 preterm babies in the NICU of E medical center at Daejeon. Data were collected from July 2004 to May 2005. The intervention was given for 15 minutes, once a day for 7 days. Physical growth was measured by weight, length, head circumference, and stress response was measured by serum cortisol level. Mean, %, paired-test, t-test with the SPSS/W in 16.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: After the intervention, physical growth variables (weight, length, head circumference) in experimental group were higher than that of the control group. Also, the serum cortisol level in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. But none of these results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a 7-day intervention period may not be long enough to confirm the effects of infant massage on physical growth and stress reaction. Therefore it is suggested that a longer period of infant massage should be tested to determine if it is effective in improving the physical growth and stress reduction in preterm babies.
The purpose of this study was to examine the path analysis of factors related to musculoskeletal diseases of shipbuilding workers by considering related factors synthetically. The survey was completed by 1,536 shipbuilding workers and except for poor responses, 1,532 were analyzed. The survey consisted of questions about lifestyle, duration of service, physical and mental stress, and musculoskeletal diseases. The collected data was analyzed with SPSS/PC+ (a descriptive statistics program) and with AMOS 4.0 (a statistical program for path modeling) to test whether the hypothesized path model fitted the collected data. The results of the correlation analysis showed that musculoskeletal disease was associated with duration of service (r=-.095), physical stress (r=.077), and mental stress (r=.602). The results of the hypothesized path model satisfied the criteria required in relation to fitting the collected data. Musculoskeletal disease was directly affected by mental stress but not by physical stress, duration of service and life style. Thus, it is suggested that reducing mental stress is a strategy for the prevention for musculoskeletal disease.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between subjective quality of life and job stress with regard to general characteristics and health characteristics of physical therapists (PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs). Methods: The study involved administering questionnaires to 93 PTs and OTs who worked in urban medical institutions between November 2009 and October 2009. A questionnaire (KvSBQOL) developed by Dunbar and colleagues and translated into Korean version by Yoon et al was used for measuring subjective quality of life. A questionnaire developed by Kim was used for measuring job stress. Results: Among PTs and OTs, the mean quality of life score was 3.10 points and the mean level of job stress was 3.42. Female PTs and OTs had significantly greater levels of job stress. Those PTs and OTs in the 'Lowest pay' group and in the 'Associated Degree' group reported the lowest quality of life. Those in the 'Very healthy' group of PTs and OTs had significantly lower job stress than the other groups. The group with the highest job stress had the lowest quality of life. A limitation of this study was that all data was self-reported and subject to associated bias. Conclusion: To prevent loss of business services by PTs and OTs, it is important to know how job stress affects quality of life. Our findings suggest that a reduction in job stress can improve quality of life among PTs and OTs.

Objectives : Physical activity is known as beneficial to mental health like decreasing depression and stress. In this study, we tried to find out the relationship between body composition, stress, depression, and self-esteem with physical activity level. Methods : International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ)-short form, SRRS(Social readjustment rating scale), SRI(Stress response index), and BDI(Beck's depression index), SES(Self-esteem scale) were given to peri-menopausal women aged 45-55 and BMI$\geq$23kg/m2. They were given written consent and this study is performed under the permission of institutional review board of Kyung Hee East-west Neo Medical Center. Results : The mean of physical activity of total subjects was 2406MET-min/week(n=42). The physical activity of overweight(23kg/m2$\leq$BMI<25kg/m2) and obese(BMI$\geq$25kg/m2) permimenopausal women was 1428MET-min/week and 2970MET-min/week(p<0.05) respectively. When three levels of physical activity pattern(inactive, minimally active, and HEPA(Health-enhancing physical activity) active) was analyzed, all of them were heavily relied on the activity intensities of walking. The scores of BDI, SRRS, and SRI were lower and that of SES were higher in HEPA active group, not showing statical significance. Anger(subscale of SRI) measures were lower and SES measures were higher in HEPA active group than others among overweight women(p<0.05). Conclusions : The level of physical activity of peri-menopausal women was on the average, but the vigorous activity is thought to be necessary. The HEPA active group showed lower depression, stress and higher self-esteem than minimally active and inactive group.
Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the relationships among freshman nursing students' academic stress, depression, and physical activity. Methods: In this descriptive study, Freshman students sampled from 4 nursing colleges were surveyed using a structured questionnaire on academic stress, depression and physical activity during the period from May to June, 2015. Results: A positive correlation was observed between academic stress and depression, but no correlation was found with physical activity. Of the subjects, 24.3% had a moderate or severe level of depression. Depression and physical activity were different according to exercise. Conclusion: The results of this study show the importance of reducing academic stress and depression for freshman nursing students. Thus, it is necessary to develop and apply depression prevention education programs to reduce academic stress and depression so that freshman nursing students lead to a healthy campus life.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among stress, physical symptoms and coping styles of high school students. Methods: In this study, 356 second grade high school students (male 181, female 175) from two schools, which were located in Dae-gu city, participated in the study. Mean scores with standard deviation, T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the data. Analysis was done using the SPSS/PC program. Results: The stress level of high school students averaged 2.59 out of a possible score range between 1 and 5, and physical symptoms, 2.38. The average level for coping styles was 1.36 of a possible range between 0 and 3. The correlations between stress and physical symptoms (r=.506), between physical symptoms and coping styles (r=.304) and between stress and coping styles (r=.363) were all significant. Conclusions: To guide the high school health program, we must try to understand the traits of the students and make efforts to identify personal and concrete difficulties in coping. Therefore it is necessary to use a stress care program to systematically improve their health.
The purpose of this study was to identify correlation of stress, coping patterns and physical symptoms in cancer patient's caregiver. The stress was measured by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale). The coping methods were measured using the modified Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Yang (1998) and the actual physical symptoms were investigated. The phases of patient illness consisted of 1st (initial) stage, and 2nd (recurred) stage and 3rd (terminal) stage based on literature (Lewandowski & Jones, 1988). The data were collected by a survey conducted from March to July, 2000 and which included 196 cancer patients' caregivers from two hospitals in Seoul. The data were analyzed using paired t-test, unpaired t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The average of caregivers' stress scores was 62.5. Problem-focused coping methods were significantly used more than emotion-focused coping methods by the cancer patients' caregiver. The mean number of caregivers' physical symptom was 1.03. 2. There were significantly high level of stress in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had a low education level, those who had no job, those who are patients' wives' and those who are terminal patients' caregiver. There were significantly low levels of coping in women, those who were more than 60 years old, those who had low education levels, those who had no job and those who are patients' wives. There were significantly higher number of physical symptoms in women, and those who have no job. 3. Caregivers' stress was significantly correlated to problem-focused coping methods (r=-.21, p=.006), and physical symptom (r=-.28, p=.0001). In conclusion, attempts to develop nursing interventions for cancer patients' caregiver in women, those who are more than 60 years old, with a low education level, have no job, and are cancer patients' wives could have an improvement on positive coping methods and provide relaxation from stress in the patients' experience.
