HgCdTe Is the most versatile material for the developing infrared devices. Not like III-V compound semiconductors or silicon-based photo-detecting materials, HgCdTe has unique characteristics such as adjustable bandgap, very high electron mobility, and large difference between electron and hole mobilities. Many research groups have been interested in this material since early 70's, but mainly due to its thermodynamic difficulties for preparing materials, no single growth technique is appreciated as a standard growth technique in this research field. Solid state recrystallization(SSR), travelling heater method(THM), and Bridgman growth are major techniques used to grow bulk HgCdTe material. Materials with high quality and purity can be grown using these bulk growth techniques, however, due to the large separation between solidus and liquidus line on the phase diagram, it is very difficult to grow large materials with minimun defects. Various epitaxial growth techniques were adopted to get large area HgCdTe and among them liquid phase epitaxy(LPE), metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD), and molecular beam epitaxy(MBE) are most frequently used techniques. There are also various types of photo-detectors utilizing HgCdTe materials, and photovoltaic and photoconductive devices are most interested types of detectors up to these days. For the larger may detectors, photovoltaic devices have some advantages over power-requiring photoconductive devices. In this paper we reported the main results on the HgCdTe growing and characterization including LPE and MOCVD, device fabrication and its characteristics such as single element and linear array($8{\times}1$ PC, $128{\times}1$ PV and 4120{\times}1$ PC). Also we included the results of the dewar manufacturing, assembling, and optical and environmental test of the detectors.

Titanium dioxide ($TiO_{2}$) film has been widely used as anti-reflection coating for solar cells but not as masking oxide for metallisation and diffusion of impurities. In this paper we have investigated the properties of $TiO_{2}$ for possible incorporation into solar cell processing sequence. Thus the use of a spray deposition system to form the $TiO_{2}$ film and the characterisation of this film to ascertain its suitability to solar cell processing. The spray-on $TiO_{2}$ film was found to be resistant to all the chemicals used in conjunction with solar cell processing. The high temperature anealing (in oxygen ambient) of the spray-on $TiO_{2}$ film resulted in an increased refractive index, which indicated the growth of an underlying thin film of $SiO_{2}$ film for the passivation of silicon surface which would reduce the recombination activities of the fabricated device. Most importantly, the successful incorporation of the $TiO{2}$ film will lead to the reduction of the many high temperature processing steps of solar cell to only one.
Short wave infrared (SWIR) photovoltaic devices have been fabricated from metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) grown n- on p- HgCdTe films on GaAs substrates. The MOVPE grown films were processed into mesa type discrete devices with wet chemical etching employed for meas delineation and ZnS surface passivatlon. ZnS was thermally evaporated from effusion cell in an ultra high vacuum (UHV) chamber. The main features of the ZnS deposited from effusion cell in UHV chamber are low fixed surface charge density, and small hysteresis. It was found that a negative flat band voltage with -0.6 V has been obtained for Metal Insulator Semiconductor (MIS) capacitor which was evaporated at $910^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. Current-Voltage (I-V) and temperature dependence of the I-V characteristics were measured in the temperature range 80 - 300 K. The Zero bias dynamic resistance-area product ($R_{0}A$) was about $7500{\Omega}-cm^{2}$ at room temperature. The physical mechanisms that dominate dark current properties in the HgCdTe photodiodes are examined by the dependence of the $R_{0}A$ product upon reciprocal temperature. From theoretical considerations and known current expressions for thermal and tunnelling process, the device is shown to be diffusion limited up to 180 K and g-r limited at temperature below this.

The organic/inorganic hybrid photovoltaic devices have been studied using Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) : [6, 6]-Phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and GaN. We traced the effect of short circuit current density with different annealing method under the various concentration and ratio of P3HT:PCBM. During the pre-annealing course, the heat treatments were performed each time at low temperature after the organic layer coated and the samples were heated at high temperature through one or two steps under the post-annealing process. It revealed that the samples with post-annealing process had higher values of short circuit current density than the other samples upon pre-annealing. And the interesting high short circuit current density features were observed at 1:1 mixing ratio and 1wt% of P3HT:PCBM.

We demonstrate here that an improvement in precursor film density (green density) leads to a great enhancement in the photovoltaic performance of CuInSe2 (CISe) thin film solar cells fabricated with Cu-In nanoparticle precursor films via chemical solution deposition. A cold-isostatic pressing (CIP) technique was applied to uniformly compress the precursor film over the entire surface (measuring 3~4 cm2) and was found to increase its relative density (particle packing density) by ca. 20%, which resulted in an appreciable improvement in the microstructural features of the sintered CISe film in terms of lower porosity, reduced grain boundaries, and a more uniform surface morphology. The low-bandgap (Eg=1.0 eV) CISe PV devices with the CIP-treated film exhibited greatly enhanced open-circuit voltage (VOC, from 0.265 V to 0.413 V) and fill factor (FF, from 0.34 to 0.55), as compared to the control devices. As a consequence, an almost 3-fold increase in the average power conversion efficiency, 3.0 to 8.2% (with the highest value of 9.02%), was realized without an anti-reflection coating. A diode analysis revealed that the enhanced VOC and FF were essentially attributed to the reduced reverse saturation current density (j0) and diode ideality factor (n). This is associated with the suppressed recombination, likely due to the reduction in recombination sites such as grain/air surfaces (pores), inter-granular interfaces, and defective CISe/CdS junctions in the CIP-treated device. From the temperature dependences of VOC, it was confirmed that the CIP-treated devices suffer less from interface recombination.

$Cu_2ZnSnS_4$ (CZTS) nanoparticles were synthesized by a solvothermal method using copper (II) acetate, zinc acetate, tin chloride, and sulfur in diethylenetriamine solvent. Binary sulfide particles such as CuS, ZnS, SnS, and $SnS_2$ were obtained at $180^{\circ}C$; single-phase CZTS nanoparticles were obtained at $280^{\circ}C$. CZTS nanoparticles with spherical shape and grain size of 40 to 60 nm were obtained at $280^{\circ}C$. In the middle of 180 and $280^{\circ}C$, CZTS and ZnS phases were found. The time variation of reaction at $280^{\circ}C$ revealed that an amorphous state formed first instead of binary phases and then the amorphous phase was converted to crystalline CZTS state; it is different reaction path way from conventional solid-state reaction path of which binary phases react to form CZTS. CZTS films deposited and annealed from single-phase nanoparticles showed porous microstructure and poor adhesion. This indicates that a combination of CZTS and other flux phase is necessary to have a dense film for device fabrication.
The heat from PV modules should be removed for better electrical performance, and can be converted into useful thermal energy. A photovoltaic-thermal(PVT) module is a combination of PV module with a solar thermal collector which forms one device that converts solar radiation into electricity and heat simultaneously. In general, there are two different types of PVT module: glazed PVT module and unglazed PVT module. On the other hand, two types of the PVT module can be distinguished according to absorber on PV module rear side: the sheet-and-tube absorber PVT module and the fully wetted absorber PVT module. In this paper, the experimental performance of water type unglazed PVT with fully wetted absorber was analyzed. The electrical and thermal performance of the unglazed PVT were measured in outdoor conditions, and the results were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the thermal efficiency of the PVT module was 42% average, and its electrical efficiencies were 15.2% and 14.2% average, respectively, for the mean fluid temperature of $10-20^{\circ}C$ and $21-30^{\circ}C$. Thermal efficiency depends on solar radiation, mean fluid temperature and ambient temperature. The PVT module temperature is related to the cooling effect of the PV module by the fluid of the absorber. The results proved that the electrical efficiency was higher when the mean fluid temperature was lower.
In this article, we have designed and synthesized a novel donor-${\pi}$-acceptor (D-${\pi}$-A) type porphyrin-based sensitizer (denoted UI-5), in which a carboxyl anchoring group and a 9,9-dimethyl fluorene were introduced at the meso-positions of porphyrin ring via phenylethynyl and ethynyl bridging units, respectively. Long alkoxy chains in ortho-positions of the phenyls were supposed to reduce the degree of dye aggregation, which tends to affect electron injection yield in a photovoltaic cell. The cyclic voltammetry was employed to determine the band gap of UI-5 to be 1.41 eV based on the HOMO and LUMO energy levels, which were estimated by the onset oxidation and reduction potentials. The incident monochromatic photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the UI-5 DSSC assembled with double-layer (20 nm-sized $TiO_2$/400 nm-sized $TiO_2$) film electrodes appeared lower upon overall ranges of the excitation wavelengths, but exhibited a higher value over the NIR ranges (${\lambda}$ = 650-700 nm) compared to the common reference sensitizer N719. The UI-5-sensitized cell yielded a relatively poor device performance with an overall conversion efficiency of 0.74% with a short circuit photocurrent density of $3.05mA/cm^2$, an open circuit voltage of 0.54 mV and a fill factor of 0.44 under the standard global air mass (AM 1.5) solar conditions. However, our report about the synthesis and the photovoltaic characteristics of a porphyrin-based sensitizer in a D-${\pi}$-A structure demonstrated a significant complex relationship between the sensitizer structure and the cell performance.
A photovoltaic/thermal(PVT)collector produces both thermal energy and electricity simultaneously. The heat from PV modules should be removed for better electrical performance, and can be converted into useful thermal energy. A PVT module is a combination of PV module with a solar thermal collector which forms one device that converts solar radiation into electricity and heat. In general, there are two different types of PVT module: glazed PVT module and unglazed PVT module. On the other hand, two types of the PVT module can be distinguished according to absorber on PV module rear side: the sheet-and-tube absorber PVT module and the fully wetted absorber PVT module. The absorber collector plays an important function in PVT system. It cools down the PV module, while collecting the thermal energy produced in the form of hot water. The aim of this study is to compare the electrical and thermal performance of two different PVT collectors, one with the rectangular tube and the other with fully wetted absorber PVT collectors. For this paper, the PVT collectors with two different types of thermal absorber were made, and both the thermal and electrical performance of them were measured in outdoor, and the results were compared. The experimental results were analyzed that the thermal efficiency of the fully wetted absorber PVT collector is about 8.7% higher than the sheet-and-tube absorber PVT collector, and for the electrical efficiency, the fully wetted absorber PVT collector had about 7% higher than the rectangular tube absorber.
For preparing a device-quality $CuInSe_2$ (CISe) light-absorbing layer by single-bath electrodeposition for a superstrate-type CISe cell, morphological properties of the CISe layers were investigated by varying concentrations of sulfamic acid and potassium biphthalate, complexing/buffering agents. CISe films were grown on an $In_2Se_3$ film by applying a constant voltage of -0.5V versus Ag/AgCl for 90 min in a solution with precursors of $CuCl_2$, $InCl_3$, and $SeO_2$, and a KCl electrolyte. A dense and smooth layer of CISe could be obtained with a solution containing both sulfamic acid and potassium biphthalate in a narrow concentration range of combination. A CISe layer prepared on the $In_2Se_3$ film with proper concentrations of complexing/buffering agents exhibited thickness of $1.6{\sim}1.8{\mu}m$ with few undesirable secondary phases. On the other hand, when the bath solution did not contain either sulfamic acid or potassium biphthalate, a CISe film appeared to contain undesirable flake-shape $Cu_{2-x}Se$ phases or sparse pores in the upper part of film.
