We investigated changes in photosynthetic characteristics of P. davidiana in order to understand damage patterns to photosynthetic apparatus under drought stress. Root sprout saplings of P. davildiana were treated with $0\%,\;2\%,\;5\%,\;and\;10\%$ of 300ml polyethylene glycol (PEG) once a weer far one month. After one month, we measured photosynthetic parameters and analyzed the photochemical and $CO_2$ fixation systems. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and respiration rate in the leaves of P. davildiana decreased according to increasing stress strength. In the photochemical system, quantum yield of PSII was reduced by the increment of PEG concentration, The decrease of apparent quantum yield was related to reduction of electron transport. Respiration rate decreased with an increase in PEG concentration, whereas photorespiration rate in the $CO_2$ fixation system increased. In conclusion, photosynthesis of P. davidiana responded sensitively under drought stress, and the sensitivity depended upon the strength of water stress. P. davidiana exhibited an increase of water use efficiency under water stress.
For developing a canopy photosynthesis model, an efficient method to measure the photosynthetic rate in a growth chamber is required. The objective of this study was to develop a method for establishing canopy photosynthetic rate curves of romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with light intensity and CO2 concentration variables using controlled growth chamber. The plants were grown in plant factory modules, and the canopy photosynthesis rates were measured in sealed growth chambers made of acrylic (1.0 × 0.8 × 0.5 m). First, the canopy photosynthetic rates of the plants were measured, and then the time constants were compared between two application methods: 1) changing light intensity (340, 270, 200, and 130 μmol·m-2·s-1) at a fixed CO2 concentration (1,000 μmol·mol-1) and 2) changing CO2 concentration (600, 1,000, 1,400, and 1,800 μmol·mol-1) at a fixed light intensity (200 μmol·m-2·s-1). Second, the canopy photosynthetic rates were measured by changing the light intensity at a CO2 concentration of 1,000 μmol·mol-1 and compared with those measured by changing the CO2 concentration at a light intensity of 200 μmol·m-2·s-1. The time constant when changing the CO2 concentration at the fixed light intensity was 3.2 times longer, and the deviation in photosynthetic rate was larger than when changing the light intensity. The canopy photosynthetic rate was obtained stably with a time lag of one min when changing the light intensity, while a time lag of six min or longer was required when changing the CO2 concentration. Therefore, changing the light intensity at a fixed CO2 concentration is more appropriate for short-term measurement of canopy photosynthesis using a growth chamber.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different surfactants on the fertilizer reduction and increase of the mineral nutrients uptake of lettuce (Latuca sativa L. 'Hanbatchungchima') in deep flow technique culture. The measured items from lettuce leaves expanded fully were growth, photosynthetic and transpiration rate, and mineral nutrient content K, Ca and Mg, respectively. The highest growth were observed at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ polyvinyl alcohol (PV4-95) treatment, including lettuce grown in the half strength of nutrient solution. The highest photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and mineral nutrient content were observed at $0.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ calcium lignosulfate (CLS) treatment. Therefore, high-quality leaf lettuce production could be achieved by apply proper surfactants PVA-95 and CLS, which can cut down the total amount of fertilizer and increase uptake of mineral nutrients.
The net photosynthetic rate of 'Seolhyang' strawberry plants was measured daily for 7 days after treatment at three UV illumination dosages (0, 9.8, and 29.5 $kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$). The net photosynthetic rates of the strawberry plants with 9.8 and 29.5 $kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ UV light illumination decreased by 20.2 and 61.4%, respectively, at 7 days after UV light treatments. UV treatments with two illumination dosages (7.9 and 15.7 $kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$) altered the phenolic compounds contents during the cultivation period when compared to those in the control fruits. The anthocyanin content with 7.9 $kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ UV light illumination of 'Seolhyang' increased by 18.7% compared with those in control fruits at the 11 DAT. However, the anthocyanin content of 'Maehyang' was not significantly different among treatments during experiment period. The highest level of ellagic acid was found with 7.9 $kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ UV light illumination in both cultivars at the 11 DAT. Our results showed that strawberries illuminated with UV light during cultivation period had higher bioactive compounds contents than control fruits. These results suggest that UV light treatments may be a useful non-chemical way of promoting strawberry fruits quality.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the salinity on growth, inorganic ion content, and photosynthetic rate ($\textrm{P}^{N}$) in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) with complex fertilizer (CF) and NaCl concentrations. The salinity was applied to plant using NaCl and CF, and controlled an EC as 0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$. The salinity treated three times at 35, 42 and 49 d after transplanting. The leaf area in different electrical conductivity (EC) decreased only the higher NaCl 1.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$. The root growth increased with CF and especially, it was two times higher at 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$ than that of control. But the root growth sharply decreased with NaCl compared to CF. The light saturation point of Korean ginseng was around 100 $\mu\textrm{mol}\;\textrm{m}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$ photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and $\textrm{P}^{N}$ increased as CF increased but decreased with NaCl especially at the late growth stage. The $\textrm{Na}^{+}$ content in Korean ginseng increased sharply with NaCl.
The coralline alga, Corallina officinalis, is a widely distributed intertidal species in temperate coastal regions. It is usually exposed to high fluctuations of light intensity, light quality, temperature, and desiccation, all of which affect the temporal and spatial distribution as well as the morphology and the metabolism of this alga. In laboratory experiments we examined the effects of different light intensities (50, 100, and 200 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$) on photosynthesis, calcification, photosynthetic pigment contents (chlorophyll a and carotenoids), and growth rate of C. officinalis to clarify its photoacclimation strategies. Net photosynthesis, calcification and dissolution rates based on weight were not sensitive to irradiance. Although, photosynthesis and calcification did not clearly respond to light intensity, photosynthetic pigment contents were significantly lower at higher light intensities. In addition, higher irradiances induced significant enhancement of gross photosynthesis based on chlorophyll a. As a result, the specific growth rate was significantly stimulated by high light intensity. Our results suggest that photoacclimation of C. officinalis to different light conditions may be regulated to optimize growth.
The morphological characteristics, carbon and nitrogen concentrations, stable isotope values and photosynthetic rates of Porphyra yezoensis were studied at the main purple lavers production areas on southwestern coast of Korea. The morphological characteristics of leaf length, leaf width and weight of Porphyra blades were between 11.6~16.3 (average 13.8) cm, 4.6~6.3 (average 5.4) cm, $1.1{\sim}2.6(average\;1.86)g\;DW\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Photosynthetic pigment of Chl a concentration of Porphyra blades was between $2.18{\sim}17.77(average\;9.65)mg\;DW\;Chl\;a\;m^{-2}$. Carbon and nitrogen concentrations of Porphyra blades was between $201{\sim}317(average\;240)mg\;DW\;g^{-1}$, $39.8{\sim}50.0(average\;43.5)mg\;DW\;g^{-1}$ and C/N ratio 5.0~6.7 (average 5.5). The range of average ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of Porphyra blades was between - 25.6 to - 24.0 (average - 24.7)‰ for ${\delta}^{13}C$, and 1.3 to 4.1 (average 2.1)‰ for ${\delta}^{15}N$. Photosynthetic characteristics of seaweeds measured by pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorometry was used as an indicator of photosynthetic activity. We use Diving-PAM fluorometry to examine photosynthetic rates of the seaweeds Porphyra yezoensis at each station. Maximum quantum yield of Porphyra blades was between 0.46~0.55 (average 0.52), the variance of the effective PS II maximum quantum yield of the station was broadly similar. Maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRmax) of Porphyra blades was between $4.71{\sim}5.84(average\;5.33){\mu}mol\;electrons\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$, the changes of maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRmax) of Porphyra yezoensis were similar to those of PS II maximum quantum yield. Photosynthetic efficiency (${\alpha}$) was between 0.027~0.045 (average 0.036). Minimum saturating irradiance ($E_k$) range was $139{\sim}180(average\;156){\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$. Minimum saturating irradiance ($E_k$) made a difference by station within the area on southwestern coast. Carbon and nitrogen concentrations and photosynthetic rates of Porphyra blades production areas on southwestern coast were broadly similar. The photosynthetic characteristics showed low photosynthetic rates because the low maximum quantum yields and low maximum relative electron transport rate.

Ionizing radiation causes many alterations in photosynthetic machineries. However, there is no information about effects of ionizing radiation on the development of photosynthetic machineries in plants. We investigated the greening of etiolated mung bean seedlings after gamma-irradiation of 50 to 300 Gy. The irradiation inhibited seedling growth with great dependence on the radiation dose. In particular, growth of stems was more affected than that of hypocotyls. Irradiated leaves showed inhibition in growth, aberration in morphology, and yellowing in color depending on the radiation dose. Contents of photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophylls and carotenoids were significantly decreased in the irradiated leaves. The apparent electron transport rate for photosynthesis, ETR, was similarly changed depending on the radiation dose. However, the maximal photochemical efficiency of Photosystem II (PSII), Fv/Fm, was little affected by the irradiation. Moreover, the 50-Gy seedlings maintained the control level of light saturating for photosynthesis and showed slightly higher Fv/Fm values in spite of significant decreases in the photosynthetic pigment content and ETR. These results suggest that the inhibition of the overall photosynthetic capacity couldn’t be causally relatqaed with the repression in the initial development of irradiated seedlings and that the overall photosynthetic machineries can develop and work to some extent as a concerted system for photosynthesis even after exposure to acute doses of ionizing radiation.
Correlative changes between photosynthetic O2 exchange rates and room temperature Chl fluorescence were investigated in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) chloroplasts treated with high temperature for 5 min. With increasing treatment temperature, photosynthetic O2 evolution rate mediated by PSII was decreased, showing 50% inhibition at 38$^{\circ}C$ (I50). But PSI activity measured by O2 uptake rates was stimulated as a function of increasing temperature. Dark level fluorescence (Fo)-temperature (T) analysis showed that fluorescence rising temperature (Tr), critical temperature (Tc), and peak temperature (Tp) was 38, 43, and 52$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Quenching analysis of Chl fluorescence showed that both the oxidized fraction of plastoquinone (qQ) and degree of thylakoid membrane energization (qNP) increased up to 4$0^{\circ}C$ and then declined dramatically. These results suggest that Tr is correlated with temperature showing a 50% of inhibition of photosynthesis and under mild high temperature stress, qNP is worth regarding as indicator for heat-induced damage of photosynthesis.
For wastewater treatment and utilization of the biomass, a photosynthetic bacterium was isolated based on its cell growth rate, cell mass, and assimilating ability of organic acids. The isolate was a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that contained a single polar flagellum and formed a lamellar intracytoplasmic membrane (ICM) system, including bacteriochlorophyll $\alpha$. The major isoprenoid quinone component was identified as ubiquinone Q-10, and the fatty acid composition was characterized as to contain relatively large amount of C-16:0 (18.74%) and C-18:1 (59.23%). Based on its morphology, phototrophic properties, quinone component, and fatty acid composition, the isolate appeared to be closely related to the Rhodopseudomonas subgroup of purple nonsulfur bacteria. A phylogenetic analysis of the isolate using its 16S rRNA gene sequence data also supported the phenotypic findings, and classified the isolate closely related to Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Accordingly, the nomenclature of the isolate was proposed as Rhodopseudomonas palustris KUGB306. A bench-scale photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) reactor using the isolate was designed and operated for the treatment of soybean curd wastewater.
