Evaluation of Popular Photometry Analysis Softwares Using DSLR Camera

  • The Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera combined with a small aperture telescope is an efficient equipment for an astronomy-related lab exercise. This paper compares the different photometry softwares to provide insights on using the GUI-based photometry tool to the conventional command-line based photometry tool. The magnitude of the same point source measured within the aperture is consistent regardless of the software used although the background estimation, partial pixel treatment, and error estimation are slightly different. In a crowded field image where the aperture photometry is less reliable, the aperture photometry with varying aperture size is useful to see the qualitative trend for the magnitude. Due to the variation in ISO settings and the color dependence on the RGB Bayer system, an initial uncertainty of ~0.15mag is expected to be embedded in the magnitude derived from the DSLR images.

  • We developed an Automatized Differential Photometry System (ADPS) to achieve high time resolution and high efficiency in the photometric observations of short period variable stars. This ADPS has been introduced to the CCD camera system attached to the 6lcm Reflector at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory. Several new algorithms were devised for the controlling the telescope. the star recognition in a CCD frame and the aperture photometry, etc..As the result, the differential photometric observation was fully automatized without any manual control, and much faster data acquisition could be achieved over the conventional photoelectric differential photometry.

  • We have obtained photometry of stars in NGC 2264 with several combinations of H$\alpha$ filters and continuum filters. The main purpose of these observations was to determine the best filter combination for selecting low ma!,s member stars in their Pre-Main Sequence (PMS) stage using H$\alpha$ photometry. A narrow band H$\alpha$ filter (${\Delta}{\lambda}$ = $l0{\AA}$) with any combination of continuum filters showed the highest resolution in the H$\alpha$ photometry.

  • We developed a real-time CCD photometric program for IBM PC compatibles. This program can perform several functions necessary for CCD photometry such as telescope control. filter rotation, CCD camera control and data acquisition, two-dimensional image processing, simple aperture photometry and automatic differential photometry. The image processing of a spiral galaxy M51 observed with the SNU 61cm reflector shows a well developed spiral structure. Simple aperture photometric results of 14 stars in open cluster NGC 6871 almost accorded with those from IRAF/APPHOT. And we could confirm the light variation of eclipsing binary EM Cep by simultaneous automatic differential photometry of 7stars in NGC 7160. Due to the excellence in the precision and efficiency of automatic differential photometry using CCD. this program is very useful for the study of small amplitude ${\delta}$ Sct type variables and of the photometric stability of B ${\sim}$ F type stars.

Retrieval of Nighttime Aerosol Optical Thickness from Star Photometry (별 측광을 통한 야간 에어로졸의 광학적 두께 산출)

  • In this study star photometry was applied to retrieve aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at night. The star photometry system consisted of small refractor, optical filters, CCD camera, and driving mount and was located in Suwon. The calibration constants were retrieved from the astronomical Langley method but standard deviations of these were more than 10% of the mean values. After the calibration the nighttime AOT was retrieved and cloud-screened in clear six days from 25 Nov. 2014 to 17 Jan. 2015. To estimate the quality of the measurements the nighttime AOT was combined with daytime AOT retrieved from sky-radiometer that was located in Seoul and 17 km away from the star photometry system. In spite of the uncertainty of the calibration constants and the spatial difference of two observation systems, the temporal changes of the nighttime AOT coincided with the daytime. The nighttime ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent was about 20% lower and more variable than the daytime because of the uncertainty of the calibration constants. If the calibration process is more precise, the combination of star and sun or sky photometry system can monitor the air pollution day and night constantly.

SURFACE PHOTOMETRY OF THE DWARF ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES NGC 185 AND NGC 205

  • We present B VRI CCD surface photometry for the central $(6'.35\times6'.35)$ regions of the dwarf elliptical galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205 in the Local Group. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 185 (R<225') and NGC 205 (R<186') show excess components in the central regions. The colors of NGC 185 get bluer inward at R<25', while they remain constant at $R\geq25'$. The colors of NGC 205 get bluer inward at 1'$\approx10^5\; L_\bigodot$. Distributions of dust clouds in the central regions of the two galaxies are also investigated.

JK INFRARED PHOTOMETRY OF THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER M3

  • We have obtained the J K images of the central region of the globular cluster M3 (NGC5272), using the $256\pm256$ InSb array. We present JK photometry of bright red giant branch stars in the central $2'.2\pm2'.2$ region of M3. The infrared color-magnitude diagrams are presented. The comparison of the red giant branch of M3 with that of M13 confirms that both globular clusters have similar metal abundances.

A PHOTOMETRIC STUDY ON THE FORMATION OF THE EARLY TYPE GALAXIES IN NEARBY GALAXY CLUSTERS

  • We present a photometric study of galaxies in the central regions of six nearby galaxy clusters at redshift z=0.0231${\~}$0.0951. We have derived BVI photometry of the galaxies from the CCD images obtained at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory (BOAO) in Korea, and JHKs photometry of the bright galaxies from the 2MASS extended source catalog. Comparing the galaxy photometry results with the simple stellar population model of Bruzual & Charlot (2003) in the optical & NIR color-color diagrams, we have estimated the ages and metallicities of early type galaxies. We have found that the observed galaxies had recent star-formation mostly 5 ${\~}$ 7 Gyrs ago but the spread in age estimation is rather large. The average metallicities are [Fe/H]=0.l${\~}$0.5 dex. These results support the hypothesis that large early type galaxies in clusters are formed via hierarchical merging of smaller galaxies.

UBVI CCD PHOTOMETRY OF THE OPEN CLUSTER NGC559

  • We have conducted UBVI CCD photometry of an intermediate-age open cluster NGC 559 to investigate the effect of dynamical evolution on the stellar distributions in NGC 559. Our photometry allows better estimates of distance and age of the cluster owing to much deeper photometry (V $\le$ 21) than previous ones. It is found that the luminosity function and mass function as well as the spatial stellar distributions are affected by the dynamical evolution. Mass segregation leads to the central concentration of the high mass stars, which results in the flattened mass function inside the half mass radius.

Globular clusters with multiple red giant branches: Narrow-band calcium photometry

  • We have performed new narrow-band calcium photometry for Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) and detected multiple red giant branches (RGBs) in some massive GCs. Our new calcium filter was designed to avoid the CN contamination below $3883{\AA}$ and to measure only Ca II H&K lines. The fact that we are detecting multiple RGBs from the new filter is suggesting that they are indeed different in calcium abundance, which can only be produced by supernovae (SNe). Therefore, the presence of the multiple RGBs for the peculiar GCs in the calcium photometry is best understood if the later generation of stars are enhanced in some SNe products. In this talk, we will present our progress in the calcium photometry for the peculiar GCs showing the multiple RGBs.
