The relationship between porous surfaces and photoluminescence (PL) behavior of porous silicon carbide (PSC) in various solvents has been studied. The porous surfaces of p-type silicon carbide can be fabricated by electrochemical anodization from the 6H, 15R, 4H-${\alpha}$-SiC substrates in dark-current mode (DCM) condition. We have been investigated the dependence of the PL spectra of PSC under the medium having the different dielectric constants. It has been found that PL depends sensitively on the environment surrounding the surface. The extent of chemically stability on the surface of PSC due to the various solvents was confirmed by reflectance Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Detailed IR experiments on the PSC samples were carried out before and after various solvents immersion. These results will be offered important information on the origin of PL in porous structure.
We describe the synthesis and characterization of silicon nanoparticles prepared by the solution reduction of silicon tetrachloride by lithium naphthalenide and subsequently with n-butyllithium at room temperature. These reactions produce silicon nanoparticles with surfaces that are covalently terminated with butyl group. Reaction with lithium aluminium hydride instead of n-butyllithium produces hydride-terminated silicon nanoparticles. The butyl or hydride terminated silicon nanoparticles can be suspended in hexane and their optical behavior have been characterized by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Stabilization of silicon nanoparticles were investigated upon illumination, indicating that as-prepared silicon nanoparticles are very stable at room temperature for several days.
Linear and nonlinear optical properties of CuCl nanocrystals in silica glass have been studied using low temperature absorption, degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM), and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Assuming a spherical shape, effective radius of the CuCl quantum dots was estimated to be 2.5 nm, which is obtained from low temperature absorption data. The DFWM experiment was performed in 380-386 nm wavelength region, and the diffracted signal was measured as a function of wavelength with 1.0 nm interval. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurement was also carried out at 77 K to obtain the time response of CuCl nanocrystals. The experimental results on the large third order nonlinear optical of CuCl quantum dots are explained in terms of crystal size and oscillator strength of quantum spheres.
We propose a new reliable, fast, and low cost identification method for similarly looking 0.3ct vivid yellow color of natural, HPHT treated, and synthesized diamonds. Conventional optical microscopy as well as low temperature PL(photoluminescence), FT-IR, UV-VIS-NIR, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry(VSM) characterization were executed. We could not distinguish the natural diamonds from the treated or the synthesized stones with an optical microscopy, PL, FT-IR, and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. However, we could identify the treated diamond with micro-Raman spectroscopy due to unique $1440cm^{-1}$ peak appearance. VSM revealed easily the synthesized diamond because of its ferromagnetic behavior. Our preliminary propose on employing the Micro-Raman spectroscopy and VSM might be suitable for identification of the similar looking vivid yellow colored diamonds.
Organometallic containing silole unit has been interested, since silole has a unique optical and electronic properties. The main goal of this work is to develop new selective sensors for organosilicon of 1-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1H-silole and 1-methyl-1-(3-aminopropyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole based on new silole have been characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. their optical characteristics have been also investigate using photoluminescence spectroscopy.
The optical characterization of self-assembled InAs/AlAs Quantum Dots(QD) grown by MBE(Molecular Beam Epitaxy) was investigated by using Photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy. The influence of thin AlAs barrier on QDs were carried out by utilizing a pumping beam that has lower energy than that of the AlAs barrier. This provides the evidence for the tunneling of carriers from the GaAs layer, which results in a strong QD intensity compared to the GaAs at the 16 K PL spectrum. The presence of two QDs signals were found to be associated with the ground-states transitions from QDs with a bimodal size distribution made by the excitation power-dependent PL. From the temperature-dependent PL, the rapid red shift of the peak emission that was related to the QD2 from the increasing temperature was attributed to the coherence between the QDs of bimodal size distribution. A red shift of the PL peak of QDs emission and the reduction of the FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) were observed when the annealing temperatures ranged from 500 $^{\circ}C$ to 750 $^{\circ}C$, which indicates that the interdiffusion between the dots and the capping layer was caused by an improvement in the uniformity size of the QDs.
We suggest that supercontinuum can be used for absorption spectroscopy to observe the exciton levels of a semiconductor nano-structure. Exciton absorption spectrum of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well was observed using supercontinuum generated by a microstructrured fiber pumped by a femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser. Significantly narrower peaks were observed in the absorption spectrum from 11 K up to room temperature than photoluminescence (PL) spectrum peaks. Because supercontinuum is coherent light and can readily provide high enough intensity, this method can provide a coherent ultra-broad band light source to identify exciton levels in semiconductors, and be applicable to coherent nonlinear spectroscopy such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI) and coherent photon control in semiconductor quantum structures.
We demonstrate a high-spatial-resolution imaging and spectroscopy tool using a solid immersion lens (SIL), a hemispherical lens made of high refractive index glass (n ~2). Photoluminescence (PL) images of single CdSe nanocrystals confirm a numerical aperture enhancement factor of ~2, close to the refractive index of the SIL. In particular, a bare-eye observation of PL signals emitted by single nanocrystals with ${\sim}10\;{\mu}m^{-2}$ densities was possible over an ${\sim}30\;{\mu}m$ diameter region. In addition, the PL spectra of single CdSe nanocrystals were successfully measured at room temperature. Thus, this SIL microscope ensures a simple but powerful method for nanostructure spectroscopy.
A simple chemical precipitation technique is reported for the synthesis of a hybrid nanostructure of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and titania ($TiO_2$) nanocrystals of average size 5 nm, which may be useful as a prominent photocatalytic material with improved functionality. The synthesized hybrid structure has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. It is clearly revealed that nearly monodispersed titania nanocrystals (anatase phase) of average size 5 nm decorate the surfaces of SWCNT bundles. The UV-vis absorption study shows a blue shift of 16 nm in the absorbance peak position of the composite material compared to the unmodified SWCNTs. The photoluminescence study shows a violet-blue emission in the range of 325-500 nm with a peak emission at 400 nm. The low temperature electrical transport property of the synthesized nanomaterial has been studied between 77-300 K. The DC conductivity shows semiconductor-like characteristics with conductivity increasing sharply with temperature in the range of 175-300 K. Such nanocomposites may find wide applications as improved photocatalyst due to transfer of photo-ejected electrons from $TiO_2$ to SWCNT, thus reducing recombination, with the SWCNT scaffold providing a firm and better positioning of the catalytic material.
