  • Background: Gamma-ray spectrometry helps in radiation shielding problems and different applications of radioisotopes. Experimental arrangements including broad beam geometries are widely used. The aim is to investigate and evaluate the ${\gamma}-ray$ spectra via attenuation by environmental materials. Materials and Methods: The photo peak to nominated parts in the ${\gamma}-ray$ spectra and the attenuation coefficients ${\mu}_b/{\rho}$ from broad beam geometries are measured for the materials water, soil, sand and cement at the energies 0.662, 1.25, and 1.332 MeV with a $3{^{\prime}^{\prime}}{\times}3{^{\prime}^{\prime}}$ NaI(Tl) detector. Results and Discussion: The ${\gamma}-ray$ spectra vary according to changes in the effective atomic number $Z_{eff}$ of the attenuator, the photon energy and the solid angle. The peak to total ratios are the most sensitive parts to variations in the experimental conditions and overturn in the region 0.663 MeV to 1.332 MeV. This is indicated as inversion trend. The results are discussed in view of $Z_{eff}$ and the experimental conditions. The intensity build-up is larger at the lower energy and larger scattering angles in agreement with Klein-Nishina formula and other results. The build-up factor B is$${\sim_=}$$1 at high ${\gamma}-energies$ and small scattering angles. Conclusion: The sensitivity to material characteristics decrease gradually from peak: to total, to Compton valley, to Compton plateau ratios. Rigorous collimation is necessary at small energies. Cement, of the largest $Z_{eff}$, is characterized by the maximum broad beam mass attenuation coefficients ${\mu}_b/{\rho}$. The obtained results provide information to decide for the suitable experimental set-up based on aim of the work.

  • Pitch-coated anatase $TiO_2$ typed was prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios. Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the $TiO_2$ particles were porous, the pitch-coated $TiO_2$ sample series showed a good adsorptivity and photo decomposition activity. The BET surface area for the carbon layer in the sample increases to increasing with pitch contents. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch-coated $TiO_2$ sample and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch-coated $TiO_2$. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of pitch-coated $TiO_2$ with slope relationship between relative concentration of MB ($c/c_o$) and t could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by $CCl_4$ solvent method.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of partially premixing, varying the equivalence ratios from $0.79{\sim}{\infty}$, on NOx emissions and chemiluminescence of excited $OH^{\ast},\;CH^{ast}\;C_2^{\ast}$ radicals in laminar partially premixed flames. the signal from the electronically excited state of $OH^{\ast},\;CH^{ast}\;C_2^{\ast}$ was detected through a band pass filter with a photo multiplier tube, which are processed to the intensity ratio ($C_2^{\ast}/CH^{\ast},\;C_2^{\ast}/OH^{\ast},\;and\;CH^{\ast}/OH^{\ast}$) to reveal the correlation with local equivalence ratio. And measurements of NOx emission were made to investigate the relationship between visible flame appearance, chemiluminescence, and EINOX. The results demonstrated that (1) the flames at ${\phi}<1.59$ exhibited classical double flame structure, at ${\phi}>4.76$, the flames exhibited diffusion flame structure, and the intermediate flames at $1.59<{\phi}<4.76$ was a merged flame, (2) the $OH^{\ast}$ peak was located inside the $CH^{\ast}\;and\;C_2^{\ast}$ radical for all measured conditions and the emission intensity ratio of $C_2^{\ast}/CH^{\ast}\;and\;C_2^{\ast}/OH^{\ast}$ were identified as good marker for local equivalence ratio over a range of ${\phi}=0.79{\sim}1.2\;and\;CH^{\ast}/OH^{\ast}\;is\;0.79<{\phi}<1.9$. However, it was difficult to predict the equivalence ratio in partially premixed flames using this system for ${\phi}>2.38$, (3) the minimum NOX emission index (EINOx) is obtained for a equivalence ratio of 3.19 in the intermediate flames.

The BET surface area depends on the pitch contents, which was made by changing the mixing ratios of the pitch with the raw $TiO_2$. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch-coated $TiO_2$ sample and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch-coated $TiO_2$. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of pitchcoated $TiO_2$ with Uv/Vis spectra between absorbance and time could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by $CCl_4$ solvent method.
